The obituary mentioned that he was survived by a wife and three sons, just like I saw in the picture. I took in the information and names of the sons and decided that I would look up the oldest son, Damon, and see if anything popped up. It made more sense that he would be the successor in the business. I was basically looking up another monster. He would be taking over the company and I was sure of that much. He was young, but business was business, someone would have to take over.
I couldn't find anything in the news about him. There were no articles to be found on him at all. I took my search to the social media networks to see if I could find him. It wasn't long before I found him. God, he was incredibly good looking. All the pictures that I saw of him were at fancy clubs with many different women. I mean, a lot of different women. The guy seemed to be a real player. I couldn't see anything that indicated he ever had a girlfriend, so he was just a man whore. Gross. It often surprised me how men could behave in such a way. They truly thought they were studs because they slept with a lot of women. I didn't care how society portrayed them, sleeping around was just slutty, end of story. This man was the epitome of a slut. The very idea that he would take out so many girls and then toss them aside sickened me.
I scrolled through his profile, surprised that a man that had a family such as his didn't have more privacy on his page. His latest status was an invite to any woman that wanted to meet up with him for drinks at a club. What a douchebag; the guy was just dying to be surrounded by eligible ladies. It made me wonder what kind of a girl would go after that grenade. I had never been to an L.A. club and thought it would be fun. Not only that but I wanted to ask him a few questions. I was hoping to get some kind of information out of him that would provide me some clarity. Something that would lead me in the right direction. I wasn't sure exactly what I could do, or how to do it, but I needed information. Would it be possible to just go up and ask him directly what happened to my parents? To demand answers, to demand someone be held accountable? No, of course not, that wasn't possible at all. I would put myself in danger, and yet I needed to find out some answers. I had to be careful, however, or I could end up like my parents.
Chapter Four
Damon
Heading to the club I already had a pretty good buzz on. I was a big fan of pre-drinking before a party. I liked feeling happy before I even entered a club. Annoyed, I wasn't really in the mood to be going out but I was determined to do so anyways. I had gotten into a fight with Gord just before I left. The old buzzer was actually starting to get on my nerves. I knew that the organization had its traditions but I wasn't about to follow every one of them. Some just didn't apply to me, plain and simple. Now that I was the new MOB leader they didn't want me going out to clubs. I couldn't even imagine what I would do with myself if I didn't have the release of going out to a club and meeting some ladies. I told Gord to mind his own business, that I was going anyways. He had been very displeased with me and I was sure he wished one of my other brothers had been old enough to take on the position. Too bad for him, he was now stuck with me. My brothers were too young, and would have no idea how to handle the responsibility that I had. They were weaker links. They had less responsibility than I did. It was as if my father had thought that no one but him could do the job right. He had no faith in his sons and yet he had to know that one day one of us would take over. Why hadn't he prepared me for that? It just didn't make any sense. Unless my father never anticipated that he would die so young; maybe he never intended on having me run the show. Was that possible? Would he have eventually changed his will, leaving me with nothing? No, he couldn't have hated me that much, and yet his lack of interest in me throughout the years made no sense. Why make me the money man if I was successor of the business? Why not put me under his wing and show me the ropes so that I was ready to take on such a feat as being the leader of such an organization? I had so much to do, so many people to run, that I found it overwhelming trying to keep up with it all. Thank god I had lackeys to do most of the work for me.
It's true that rival organizations would love to take a hit at the new boss in town to crumble an organization, but that wasn't going to happen to me. I was much too smart for that. Besides, I had bodyguards with me just in case. Either way, I didn't give a shit what Gord wanted. I was living my own life for a change. My father had spent a lot of time trying to crush my own dreams, so I wasn't about to live in his shadow after his death as well. I was in control now and we were going to do things my way. Once I got a handle on how the business was run there would be some changes. There had been some things that I disagreed with my father about, things I felt that could have been more profitable, but he had never listened to my ideas. Well I was running the show now and people were going to start to listen to me. It was a new generation of MOB bosses and I was going to show them how it was done.
We pulled up to the club and the bodyguards surrounded me as we made our way passed the line and in through the front door. The club was hopping as usual and we headed to my own private VIP booth. It was always filled with liquor and it kept the riffraff out. Most of the women there always wanted to be with me; I always had women all over my arm. They knew me as a wealthy guy to begin with, and that was before I became the leader of a billion dollar organization. I liked to treat the ladies well for their attention. I had a habit of showering them with gifts for various reasons. They all hoped to be the one girl that would finally steal my heart and live happily ever after with. That was highly unlikely as I had no intention of having my heart stolen by anyone. There was no interest in it for me. I preferred to be alone and women were just looking for money anyways. When it was time to marry a gold digger of my own I would just close my eyes and point at one. They were all the same, there was no need to be choosey. When a woman came around that surprised me that would truly be the day. But I wasn't holding my breath. The only original woman I knew was my mother and she came from a very different generation of women. The women nowadays were all superficial bitches who worried more about selfies than anything going on in the world. It turned my stomach; all they were good for was a fun roll in the hay and nothing more. My mother often pressured me about getting a woman and marrying her so that I would have someone to watch my back in life. I knew one day she would expect that of me but I planned on holding off for as long as I could. The very idea of marriage made my stomach do flip flops. All the MOB leaders however had wives; some had girlfriends too, but that wasn't something that was allowed within our organization. My father had always been loyal to my mother and he expected the same from his sons. It didn't matter what we did before marriage, but afterwards he expected that we put up a loyal front for the women in our lives. Maybe that was why I didn't want to get married. I was having too much fun in my life right now, so why would I settle down? Responsibility really wasn't my thing, but now that I was the leader I was more than willing to step up. I just didn't want to deal with a wife.
It was kind of pathetic really that these women just sought after wealth and fame. It was like so many shallow women in Hollywood that do everything in their power to sleep with a celebrity. I was no different; they wanted to take the heart of a womanizer like me. To be the girl that finally caged the beast was a real power trip for some of these ladies. I was considered to be a pretty big prize to be won, and I wouldn't be going down without a fight that was for sure.
One of my boys started pouring shots for all of us and the women started approaching as if they had caught my scent. They were heat seeking missiles that managed to find me no matter where I went. My booth filled up quickly which my boys loved. Hey, there was more than enough to go around. More often than not my boys always managed to pick up my leftovers. I was rarely with the same girl twice. She had to be pretty special in the bedroom as I was, so I often ignored the women until they went off with someone new. Sorry ladies, I didn't want anyone to get too attached to me.
“Johnny, pour these ladies some drinks, let’s get them hammered.”
&
nbsp; There was laughing all around me as I leaned back in my seat. I scanned the crowd to see if I recognized anyone. It was important to know who was around you at all times. I didn't like surprises. I recognized most everyone as regulars at the club, as it was usually the same old people that came around. Suddenly I noticed someone new. I had never seen the girl in the club before. She was certainly someone you wanted to admire, however. She leaned against the bar and was surveying the crowd herself. She was absolutely breathtaking in a short white dress that clung to her sexy frame. She was the most stunning brunette I had seen in quite some time. The way she carried herself surprised me. Most of the women I knew had fake confidence. They walked with their head held high but if you talked to them long enough you would find that they were incredibly insecure. This girl however had no men around her at the moment and she appeared as if she couldn’t have cared less. She was her own woman. She didn't look around for men, she didn't try to make eye contact, she appeared to be just living in the moment. So if she wasn't out searching for a man then what was she doing there? She clearly had come alone, since there was no girl by her side. She just stood there leaning against the bar and casually looking around the room.
I knew I had never seen her there before, because she was the kind of girl you would remember seeing. I would have had my hands on her in seconds had I seen her before. I always came to that club — it was rare that I ventured somewhere new. I liked the people and they treated me well. Plus, some of the hottest women in the city came to that club, so why go anywhere else? This girl stuck out however. I wasn't sure how she had managed to find her way inside the club but I was going to take the opportunity to seduce her. I was sick of the same old girl, and this one was different, I could tell. Maybe not marriage different, but definitely interesting enough to make me have a second look. I would know fairly early into a conversation if a girl was worth my time.
There was no doubt about it, I would have her. I had to have her. I could not let a vixen like her leave before I had her in my bed. The things I would do to her caused my body to grow warm. I needed that body against mine, I needed to be inside her. She would be mine. She was just another target for me to sleep with. She had yet to meet a man of my stature, that much I could bet on. She had no idea who I was so that would work to my advantage. I would have her eating out of the palm of my hand in no time. She was going to be the easiest catch of the day. I would take her home and use her up; depending on how well it went I may take her for a second round. But I rarely ever saw a woman for the third time. There were millions of women in the world, why would I bother to spend so much time with just one? That could wait until I was married.
I took a big gulp of my drink and slammed it down on the table. My boys poured me another without realizing that I was bailing. I downed that one as well and put my hand up to stop a third pour. I looked back at the brunette and smiled. She stood there eyeing the crowd, just waiting for me to pounce on her. I told my boys to stay put, that I would be right back. The bodyguards grumbled, knowing it would be their asses if anything were to happen to me. It was all part of the job, however, and I wasn't hiding from nobody. I straightened out my tie and, to the disappointment of the girl sitting with me, I started walking towards the mystery lady.
Chapter Five
Cadence
The club scene in California was extremely overwhelming. There was nothing like that in Illinois. The place was jam packed full of people that looked like they were all models and actors. How was it possible to have so many beautiful people in one room? I shouldn't have been surprised. It was Hollywood after all, wasn't that where all the beautiful people came from? Most people flooded the area in the hopes of being the next Ryan Gosling or Julia Roberts. It certainly wasn't why I was there; most of these people would probably look down on me for being a lowly accountant. That's why I was hoping to snag a job with a big corporation because they often paid well. I would need it in a city like this. If I didn't find a job soon I may have to consider stripping, I thought sourly. I was joking of course; I would be a terrible stripper. I was definitely not good in front of a crowd and I would probably need to be high and drunk just to take off my clothes. No, stripping was definitely not my calling. Besides, I had only been there for a week; a job was sure to come up shortly. I just needed to have more patience and keep handing out resumes.
Being inside the bar was nerve wracking. I knew there were dangerous people around me and I had no idea who were the normals and who were the killers. My heart was beating in my chest like crazy and I knew that I needed to calm down or I would be of no use that night. I had to stay focused and alert; if I appeared too nervous, I may look guilty to someone like Damon. The last thing I wanted to do was to cast suspicion on myself before I got close enough to get some answers. No, I needed to play it real cool for a while.
“Hey sweetheart, do you need a drink?”
I turned to see the bartender giving me a warm smile.
“Yes please. Grey Goose on the rocks, thank you.”
He went about getting my drink while I watched him prepare it. My goal was to get as much alcohol in my system so that I could be relaxed when I talked to Damon, but not too much that I couldn't think straight. The bartender set my drink before me and I took a dainty sip. God, that was good. I downed the whole thing in a couple of gulps and ordered another one.
“Thirsty there, little lady?”
I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to see none other than Damon standing before me in all his glory. Holy Shit, I wasn't ready for this. Where had he come from?
He was far more handsome in person than he was in pictures.
“Ya, I guess. Long day, just trying to relax.”
He motioned to the bartender who brought him a drink. He must be a regular as the bartender knew exactly what he liked. He set down my drink as well and Damon told him to keep them coming.
“Just put her drinks on my tab, please.”
“No problem, Damon,” the guy said with a wink. What did that wink mean?
“That's really unnecessary, I can pay for my own drinks.”
He smiled. “I'm sure you can. Where are you from, I've never seen you in here before.”
Oh shit. Did he know everyone? Was that my first mistake, standing out like a sore thumb? Way to go, Cadence.
I would need to lie a bit just in case he was familiar with my family. I didn't want him to have any idea where I was from or why I was in California.
“Oh I'm not from here. I literally just moved to Hollywood a week ago. I wanted a fresh start. I'm from Michigan, so this is a pretty big deal for me.”
“Wow, I bet. Though I do know some...people out there. Are you an actress?”
“Oh god no. Though I may have to consider that as a career choice if I don't find a job soon. I moved here because I like the warmth. We have crazy winters in Michigan.”
“Well, what kind of work are you looking for?”
“I'm an accountant...I know, so glamourous right?”
He chuckled. “An accountant...very nice.”
He seemed lost in thought for a moment when I said, “So, the bartender called you Damon, right?”
“Yes, and what is your name?”
“Cadence.”
“Beautiful name for a beautiful girl.”
I beamed at him, letting him think that he was reeling me right in. In reality I wanted to vomit.
“Well thank you.”
We continued chatting like that for a while. The drinks kept flowing and I continued to try to find the right moment to ask him some questions. It just never seemed to come however. I was so scared that he would see right through me and then I would be in real trouble. I needed to be subtle with my questioning so that he didn't suspect a thing. The man seemed so normal and yet he was terrifying at the same time. It was really hard to believe that I was sitting there with a man that could very well be organizing murders. Was it now his job to send people to kill parents now that his ow
n father was dead? Would he feel any regret or compassion if he had any idea what he had put me through? Men in his position rarely felt bad for the terrible things that they did, so why should I think that Damon would be any different? He was just as big of a monster as his father had been. They were all alike and I was getting really close to being in danger myself. God, what had I been thinking coming there?
“What's say we get out of here and go back to my place?” he asked.
Shit. What do I do? I had drank more than I had wanted to while talking to Damon. I was not ready to ask him anything about his job or the company he works for. I knew I couldn't ask him anything about whether his father was part of the MOB in L.A.
“Sure, that sounds good,” I said with a nervous laugh.
I agreed to go with him to his place because it was the only way for me to get closer to the truth about my parents’ murder.
Chapter Six
Damon
When we arrived back at my place, I could tell by the look on Cadence's face that she was shocked. Most girls weren't shocked to find out that I lived in a mansion. They expected it; after all that was why they were with me in the first place. They loved the idea of slamming a rich guy, it was probably all they thought about.
