“Cam?” He turned his head and I continued, without waiting for him to respond. “Will you hold me?”
He gave me a small smile and opened his arms. I curled up against him, closing my eyes as everything familiar about him invaded my senses. His smell, his warmth, his touch—all of it came over me at once.
“How did you know this was my favourite movie?” I asked, sliding my hand along his thigh.
He grinned and pressed a kiss to my cheek. “How else? Your aunt loves to talk. Especially about you.”
Great. If he didn’t know my life history, he would before the week was up with Aunt Greta staying around.
“I love you, Cameron.” I don’t know where the words came from as they spilled from my lips. “I realised it when I came home and saw you working on my car… I’ve never been in love before.”
Though he didn’t profess his undying love for me, he did kiss me. “Shh. Let’s watch the movie. Are you hungry?”
I shook my head, more because I didn’t want him to leave my side than anything. And he didn’t. His arms tightened around me as we settled again, his head lying against mine. I didn’t know why but somehow, knowing he’d be there when I woke up, when I needed him, comforted me on a whole new level.
* * * *
Sunday was there before we knew it, and my head didn’t ache as much. We didn’t talk about anything that had happened, nor did I really think about it. Aunt Greta checked in with us and I think I finally convinced her I was fine. Who knew? She’d always been like a mother to me and would always worry.
I sat at Cameron’s table with a bowl of cereal while he read the morning paper, sipping at his coffee. I couldn’t help smiling at how normal we looked, even in the midst of all these events. It looked as if we’d been married for years.
“You’re smiling at me?” Cameron folded the paper and tossed it to the side, giving me his undivided attention.
I tried to hide it by taking a mouthful of food, but it didn’t work. I still had the goofy grin. “I was just wondering if we could do something today. I am feeling better and I so deserve to get out of the house.”
He narrowed his eyes. “What do you have in mind?”
I took a drink of my milk. “Taking a ride in the McLaren. You said you’d take me.”
“Of course.” He rolled his eyes and began to laugh before he kissed me. “I love you, sweetie.”
We got dressed in a hurry and made our way to the fast car. Cameron opened the doors, which slid upwards instead of out. Once inside, he slammed my door and came around to the driver’s seat. The garage door went up and he started the loud engine.
“Damn,” I said, sliding my hands along the black butter-soft leather. He gave me little time to explore the interior.
“You might want to put your seatbelt on.” He gave me a lascivious grin. “You’re going to need it.”
I smiled. This was definitely the beginning of something wonderful.
