Karen shifted from one foot to the other, looking down at the ground. "Because I'm giving the other ten thousand to you."
I didn't think I'd ever be able to pick my jaw back up off the ground. "Are you serious right now?"
"Well, duh. You kind of did save my life and all," she swiftly replied, shaking her head at me, finally looking back up. "Who else would I share it with?"
"You don't have to, though. You could take that money and, I dunno, do whatever you wanted to with all of it. You don't have to split it with me. Believe it or not, my healing services are at the low, low price of abso-freaking-lutely free for my best friend," I shot back.
Karen grinned. "I want you to put it towards going back to school. So you can finally go to veterinary school like you've been talking about. We need Dr. Taylor Dean to look in on the mutts, after all," Karen nudged me playfully. "But really. I insist. I don't know how else I could even begin to thank you for what you did."
There was no use in pretending my eyes weren't welling up with stupid tears. I wiped at them, trying to laugh. "Oh you do, do you? Well, I guess if you insist."
Karen leaned in and threw her arm around my shoulder, laughing right along with me. "So, future Dr. Dean, what are your thoughts on Rosemary Creek, now that you've seen it all?"
Boy, she wasn’t lying. I looked over at Darren, Eliza, Ken, and the rest of the firm's staff, all of them looking a little bit more relaxed now that the murderer was behind bars.
The very last thing I had imagined when I first showed up in Rosemary Creek was that I would be so immediately made to feel welcome, as if I had always lived there. And I never expected to so quickly gain not only new friends, but the start of what felt like a new family. I grinned down at Karen.
"Let's see. I'm mildly impressed with how fast word of mouth travels. There may be some potential swipe-rights, and I'm enjoying the scenery. Oh, and the people ain't so bad, either." For the first time since my parents had died, I felt excited to see where the future was going to take me.
