  Summary

It’s the same old story. Girl cheats on guy, guy swears off women. After all, who needs that in his life? But I miss women, particularly one with long legs and a figure that drives me crazy. Even better, she’s my best friend from work, so I trust her not to hurt me.

But when I find out she’s had feelings for me longer than I’ve known, it’s a delicate balance. I don’t want to lose our friendship, but I have to make Lucy mine.

*The Broken Man series is made up of standalone short stories that can be enjoyed without reading the rest of the series. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and as always, you get a Happily Ever After*

  CHAPTER 1

  ___________________

  MASON

Shit. She’s here. Standing right outside the doors at the counter, waiting for a pick-up.

  Carrie. My ex-girlfriend.

Why the hell does she still come to this diner? My diner. She knows I work here—and have since she cheated on me. So what the fuck is she doing here?

Trying to rub it in, probably. But, hell, all that had happened nine months ago. I’m over her. So far over her I don’t even care why she’s here. I just don’t want to see her anymore.

Then my gaze catches on long legs in short shorts, and toned arms in a cut-off shirt that rises just above her belly button. My throat dries. Lucy Moore.

Now she would never cheat on anyone. Lucy and I have been friends for years, and she talked me down from all that shit with Carrie. She was there when I caught Carrie with her lips locked on some random guy’s. She was there when I wanted to smash in every surface at work and hunt down my ex to give her a piece of my mind. And she’s still here, a rock I didn’t know I needed. So much so that my affection for her has developed into something new.

Something that’s making my pants very uncomfortable right now. How can she make serving burgers so fucking sexy?

At least she distracted me from Carrie.

The instant my ex leaves through the front door, Lucy skirts around the counter, says something to Old Man Joe who always has lunch here, and walks straight to the kitchen. The doors almost hit me as she shoves them open, and then she laughs when she sees me standing so close.

Her voice is like an instant line to my cock, making it jump to attention. Fuck. I shift so I’m standing behind a chair—hoping she won’t notice my massive hard-on.

“I’m assuming you saw her,” Lucy says.

  “Who?”

Her eyes widen. “Oh. I thought—never mind. Just forget I said anything.”

I laugh, wanting to reach out and rub my thumb on her bare arm. And then run my fingers over the exposed flesh of her stomach…then lower. “I’m joking. Yeah, I saw her. Whatever.”

“She’s an ass for coming here, and a ho to boot.”

Her words make me laugh harder. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Lucy curse before, but she has a lot to say about Carrie. I kind of like it. She’s standing up for me—she’s got my back. If only she had more of me.

But Lucy is a friend and taking another step with someone like that might fuck us both over. Still, another month of this is going to kill me.

“You closing tonight?” I ask her, even though I know her schedule.

“Yep. All I want is a glass of wine and a hot bath, but I get to do dishes and mop floors. Dreamy.”

But I’ve lost all coherent thought because I just pictured her in that hot bath, her glass of wine hand, and her other hand dipping into the water. Moving secretly to her pussy, her mouth opening with the pleasure it brings her.

This is definitely not doing anything for the erection I’m trying to hide.

  “Mason?”

I blink and flash a smile, hoping I didn’t miss anything. “I’ll help,” I say quickly. “To get you out of here as fast as possible.”

She returns my smile, angling her head and meeting my eyes for a long moment. Finally, she drops her gaze and says, “You’re a good friend.”

And then she turns and leaves the kitchen. Carlos, over at the grill, shakes his head.

“Damn. You just got friend zoned.”

I flip him off. Bad enough she had to say those words to me, but worse that she said them in front of Carlos. Carlos knows I’ve been watching Lucy for months, admiring her legs as she speeds through the diner and serves people.

“Shut up,” I tell him, and get back to work.

But Carlos isn’t finished. He flips his patties and glances at me. “Shit. Just tell her already.”

“And if she doesn’t feel the same way?”

“Then you suck it up and deal with it like a man. Your dick will get less and less hard every time you see her, and eventually you’ll both move on.”

  “Eloquent,” I tell him.

He shrugs. “Doesn’t matter how I put it, it’s true. You want her, you do something about it. You don’t, then your pants are getting awful uncomfortable for no reason. Looks to me like this isn’t something a cold shower will fix.” Carlos points his spatula at me. “Tell her.”

He’s right. This isn’t just a hot girl or a passing feeling. It’s Lucy. I haven’t gotten over her in months, I don’t know why I would all the sudden now.

But telling her isn’t my style. I glance through the doors to the diner and watch as she takes an order. When she bends down to ruffle a little boy’s hair, giving me a great view of her very fine, tight ass, I get hard again.

Fuck it. I’m all over this now. Carlos is right. Either it’ll happen or we’ll move on.

But more than anything, I want it to happen. Lucy and me. Bodies coming together in something more than friendship.

  CHAPTER 2

  ___________________

  LUCY

I’ve been cursing myself all afternoon and evening for telling Mason
he’s a good friend. How’s he ever going to see me as anything more if I keep treating him like a brother?

But what am I supposed to do? Just blurt it out how I’ve been in love with him for years? No way. Every time I get close, he starts dating someone new. Girl after girl, until I’m reminded how much I’m not his type. How much he’d rather be with someone else.

  Like Carrie.

But…I glance to the pass-through, where I catch a few glimpses here and there of Mason while he cleans the kitchen. He hasn’t been with anyone in months. After Carrie, he said he was done with women.

Did that mean all women or just women like her? And really, I know it’s not Mason’s style to give up on the opposite sex completely. He’ll be back at it again soon.

So why shouldn’t he be back at it with me?

Mason scrubs the stove and I see his muscles flex with the motion. Something so simple makes my clit throb. I don’t know how many times I’ve imagined his mouth on mine, hands wandering to my shorts and slowly undoing the button. And I let myself replay that scenario over and over because if I go any further, I don’t think I’ll be able to handle it.

But every once in a while, another image will sneak through. One of him naked. One of his mouth on my pussy, teasing me with his tongue until he drives me crazy. One of his dick poised at my wet entrance until he claims me.

A shaker of salt that I’m filling tips over, crashing to the floor and shattering.

Mason shoots out of the kitchen faster than I can blink. “You okay?” he asks.

I nod, pointing to the floor. “An accident.”

“You never have accidents,” Mason says, shaking his head. “You’re always poised.”

I smile at him. I think that’s the first time he’s ever complimented me. “Thanks.”

“Don’t move,” he says. “I’ll grab a broom.”

We’re the only two in the diner, and it’s hard to focus when it’s just us. Alone.

I skirt around the pile of salt and the pieces of glass to scoot the table over some. Mason returns and grabs the other side of the table.

“There’s glass everywhere. Be careful,” he says.

  “I will.”

I reach for the broom at the same time he does, and his hand collides with mine. I jerk back. “Sorry.”

  “I’m not.”

My gaze comes up and connects with his. He reaches out to take my hand, pulling it back to the broom and then wrapping his fingers over mine.

“I need to clear something up,” he says.

My breath stalls in my throat at his touch, at the warmth of his strong fingers around mine. “What?”

“The comment you made earlier in the kitchen.”

  “Shit,” I whisper. “That.”

He lifts his eyebrows. “Since when do you have such a dirty mouth?”

“One curse word? That’s a dirty mouth? Because I hear what you and Carlos say in the kitchen, and I swear my grandmother would have a heart attack if she ever heard you.”

He lifts one corner of his lips in a grin, that carefree smile that made me fall for him in the first place. “You’re not supposed to be listening to us. We wouldn’t talk like that around you.”

“No? I’m not one of the guys?”

He coughs out a laugh. “Hell no.”

  I frown.

“Wait—no, that’s not what I meant,” Mason says. He tugs the broom handle and makes me stumble forward. When I’m a breath away from my breasts brushing his chest, he continues. “I mean, I don’t see you as one of the guys.”

“What do you see me as?”

His free hand comes up, fingers featherlight on my cheek. “Fuck, Lucy. I want you—and have for months.”

His words are like a wave of warm water, filling me up and taking away every ounce of worry or tension I’ve ever felt about us or between us.

And then I see the hunger in his eyes and the warmth turns into electricity. A bolt of lightning to my center before everything starts throbbing again. He wants me and I want him so bad, I’m struggling not to jump on him right now.

  Then my cell phone rings.

I blink a few times, feeling like I’m being pulled out of a fog. Who the hell is calling me this late at night?

“Sorry,” I mumble, pulling the phone from my pocket.

Mason takes a step back, and then takes the broom from me while I answer.

  “Hi, Mike,” I say.

Mason glances up with a questioning look on his face. Mike’s our boss.

“Hey, Lucy. Darlene called me and said she’s sick. Is there any way you can cover her shift tomorrow morning?”

I watch Mason sweep up the glass and salt, squeezing my legs together because his words are still in my head. I want his body against mine, and I’m on the phone with my boss. Not my favorite contradiction.

“I’m supposed to work the late shift tomorrow,” I remind him.

“I’ll let you switch so you don’t have a double,” Mike says. “Unless you want a double?”

Mason narrows his eyes on mine. I know he works tomorrow morning, too. At least I’ll get to work with him.

“Do I want a double tomorrow?” I whisper to him.

He gives his head a firm shake.

I smile and tell Mike I’ll switch shifts.

When the call is over, I sigh. “So much for the wine and bath tonight. I have to be back here in eight hours.”

Mason’s eyes flash with heat. “Tomorrow things will look different. And I’ll make sure you get that wine and your bath if you still want it.”

  “Oh really?”

He sets aside the broom and steps up to me so the toes of our shoes are touching. “It’s a promise.”

  CHAPTER 3

  MASON

Getting through my shift the next day is hell. I can’t keep my eyes off of Lucy. Or keep my mind from wandering to what it would be like to taste her. Feel her. Remove every piece of her clothing one by one and watch her in the bathtub. Naked. Getting wet for me and only me.

By noon, I can’t take it anymore.

“I’ll be back,” I tell Carlos.

I walk to the dining area, crook my finger at Lucy when I catch her eye, and walk down the hall to the bathrooms. On the left, there’s a storage closet, where we keep brooms and mops and cleaner.

Lucy comes around the corner, and her eyes widen when I grab her hand and tug her into the closet with me before shutting the door.

It’s dark in here, only a dim sliver of light shining through under the door. I hear her gasp when I yank her to me.

Her mouth connects with mine at the same time her breasts crush against my chest. I’m wild for her, the world around me completely dropping away.

I slip my tongue between her lips, seeking entrance. She opens for me, her tongue tangling with mine. She makes a low, sexy moan that has my dick twitching.

“I can’t wait for tonight,” I murmur, my lips brushing hers. “I have to have part of you now.”

“I can’t wait either,” she says, breathless.

I turn her so her back is against the wall, so I can press my entire body into hers in the darkness. I can only see a glint of her eyes in the blackness, but I can feel her everywhere. Her chest swells against mine, nipples tightening into hard, taut peaks.

Her hands slide under my shirt in the back while I nip her lip, drawing out another low moan. My dick hardens against the zipper of my jeans, longing to be free. Shit. Why can’t it be the end of our shift right now?

I’m halfway tempted to rip her clothes off and take her right here against the wall. But no, I promised her wine. A bath. God, the things I’m going to do to her once she gets out of that water.

Sliding my hands under shirt, I find her bra, a flimsy, lacy deal that could be off in a matter of seconds. But I restrain myself, instead rubbing my thumbs over her nipples, feeling them harden even further through the material.

  She arches her back, pressing
her body against me, not knowing how much it’s killing me right now to hold back.

  “I need you,” Lucy whispers.

“Fuck. You can’t say that to me right now.”

Her breath rushes out in a laugh, even while her hands continue to wander. She brushes her palm against my cock and I groan.

I grab her wrists and pin them to the wall beside her head. “Lucy,” I say, warning in my tone.

  “You started it.”

“I did,” I murmur, kissing her again. “And I’m going to finish it tonight. You’d better be ready to go right when our shift is over.”

“I’ll be ready.” I can hear the smile in her voice when she says it.

Part of me wants to dip my hand into her pants just to see how ready she is. But I’ll wait. I’ll build up to it, until neither of us can hold back. So it’s even better when I finally slide my dick into that sweet pussy.

I release her reluctantly and ease back, putting my hand on the door knob. “Just so you know,” I tell her before opening the door, “I’ve been waiting for this for a while.”

  “Me too.”

I open the door, check the hallway, then give her a nod. She squints her eyes against the light, but walks around me and gets back to work. I walk to the bathroom and compose myself. She’s wanted this for a while?

Why the fuck did I wait so long? Months of watching her when I could have had my hands all over her. I plan on making up for all that tonight. I’m already halfway falling for Lucy, and now she’s going to be mine.

I finish my shift, barely listening to Carlos as he goes on and on about his girlfriend and how they’re trying to find a new apartment.

The moment I’m off the clock and I spot Lucy, I grab her hand. “We’re taking my car.”

  “But—”

“We’ll come back for yours later. Or whatever you want. I need to get you home.”
