“I have no idea. Maybe we should run away and get married on a sunny beach.”
“My family would never forgive us. And neither would yours.”
Teagan lay back against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. “I never thought I’d have a real family. But they look so happy. Don’t they?”
“Yes,” Cal said. “They do.” He closed his arm around her waist, and pulled her tightly to him. “When are we going to make the announcement?”
She looked up at him and stroked his cheek. “Now.”
Cal kissed her hand, and then stood up, pulling Teagan to her feet to stand beside him. “We have an announcement.”
All eyes were on Cal and Teagan. They had invited their family and friends to a picnic on the side of the creek, in the exact spot they first met. The creek was low now, the banks dry, with not a single raincloud in the sky.
“What kind of announcement?” Jax asked.
“Have you set a date?” Ronni asked.
“A wedding!” Tansy exclaimed.
Cal took Teagan’s hand. “Sorry, Mom, you are going to have to wait a little longer for that.”
“Then what?” Theo asked. “Don’t say you are leaving town.”
“No, we plan to stay here all of our lives. And raise our child here.”
A squeal of joy erupted from Tansy, and she clasped her hands to her mouth. “MY first grandchild?”
“Yes,” Teagan said.
And then the hugs began. Lots and lots of hugs. And when it was her parents’ turn, her mom whispered, “I hope you can find it in your heart to let us be a part of this, Teagan. To make up for letting you down.”
“There is nothing to make up for.” She took hold of her mom’s hand. “It’s not always about the journey, it’s the destination. And I like where I am. I like it a lot.”
She let go of her mom and reclaimed Cal from his family. “I love you…” But she was interrupted by the long, low moo of a cow. And there he was, the one who had brought them together. Bigger, stronger, but still at his mom’s side.
“I can’t wait to tell that story to our children,” Cal said, his hand on her belly. “And our children’s children.”
And then he kissed her, just as he had that first day they met in the rain.
