Full Moons, Dunes & Macaroons: A Cozy Witch Mystery (Spells & Caramels Book 5) Page 19

by Erin Johnson

Besides, if Horace hadn't disrupted the wedding, Hank would be married to Shaday right now. These fireworks would be in celebration of their marriage. He had been prepared to go through with it. If anything, in a weird way, we owed Horace for our chance to be together now. I glanced sideways up at Hank as he watched the lights in the sky. I doubted he'd see it that way.

My stomach twisted further. And now I had my brother to worry about. Would he be out for revenge on me for foiling his plans and exposing some of his secrets?

I glanced left and caught Hank's mother, brother, and sister-in-law all watching me. They turned hurriedly away, except for the sister-in-law—I thought her name was Emmaline. She flashed me a big grin and waved her fingers at me. Hank's father glared down at the celebrating, dancing, parading citizens below. And that was another thing. With our relationship public, I'd probably be seeing a lot more of Hank's family and need to polish up on my royal etiquette—of which I knew none. I sighed, my emotions churning inside me.

On one hand I wanted to cheer along with the rest of them. Shaday would rule and bring more equality and strength to the throne of the Fire Kingdom, and now Hank and I had a chance of being together. On the other, I had a murderous brother who may or may not want to punish me. As well, I had a boyfriend who'd nearly chosen to be with another out of obligation to his dysfunctional family (not that I could judge) and lots of secrets weighing me down.

I thought back to what I'd said to Hank a few moments ago. I was more hopeful now… wasn't I?
