"He said my sisters were talking about where I lived. I never thought to ask them not to say anything." She dabbed antiseptic on the broken skin.
"From what Delmont told me, this will be the third strike for both of those assholes. Both have committed violent felonies in the past. Because they'll be tried in California, not Texas, they are looking at twenty-five-years to life. You'll never have to worry about them again." Or at least he hoped. He'd pull some strings and find a way to make sure he was notified if any of those men received early release. If they were stupid enough to come back to Half Moon Bay, Gunner would be waiting for them.
"Why did you turn him onto his side?" A.J. reached back for a clean bar towel.
"Because he could have aspirated his own blood. Lungs don’t tolerate that well." Gunner wasn't going to jail, not for that scum. Self-defense was one thing, but with his extensive training, a good attorney might try to pin a negligent homicide tag on him. He didn't think the ex's family could afford a good attorney, but he wasn't going to risk it.
"You were pretty badass, you know." She peeked up at him through her lashes.
"I was, huh?" He leaned forward and waggled his eyebrows. Those morons weren't a serious threat to anyone but themselves, but he'd take the honors she bestowed upon him. He didn't even work up a sweat dispatching either of the fuckers. The only challenge had been to stop hitting the man threatening A.J. The urge to make them go away permanently was real. Thank God for his training. The self-discipline the Navy had ingrained in him was the only thing that allowed him to stop.
"Yeah. You are my knight in shining armor." She leaned forward and kissed him. "What do I give such a valiant savior as a reward?"
Gunner smiled across the bar at the woman he loved. "That's easy, my lady. I'll settle for nothing less than your heart. I love you."
