On February 27, 1973, two hundred Oglala Lakota (Sioux) activists and members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) began a protest in Wounded Knee, South Dakota, demanding that the U.S. government make good on treaties from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They remained for seventy-one days
