The next minute she was sobbing in Domenico’s arms and he was whispering in her ear, thanking her, and telling her that he loved her and treasured her more than anything on earth.

The dogs picked up on the excitement and started barking. And Cal began to cry.

It took about ten minutes for everyone to settle down, although, Arlene thought, things would never be the same again, and nor would she want them to be. From that point on, they could only get better.

Domenico produced a magnum of champagne he’d brought back from Vancouver and poured a glass for Cal and himself. Cal found a bottle of sparkling grapefruit juice for Arlene. The lights on the Christmas tree sparkled in the dusk. The flames burned yellow and orange in the hearth. Outside, the snow began to fall again.

Domenico pulled Arlene close and curved a possessive arm around her waist. “To the future,” he said, raising his glass. “To a new year, a wedding, and most of all to the woman who’s given my life new and very real meaning. To you, Arlene, my darling one. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for trusting me to become the husband you deserve. I love you and I promise you now, with Cal as my witness, that I will treasure you for the rest of my life.”

Her heart overflowing, Arlene lifted her face for his kiss. She was home at last, with the only man in the world she’d ever love.
