  Chapter One

Peeking out the blinds into the next yard, Jeanne wondered how Ian had kept his secret all these years. The man wasn’t doing a very good job pretending to be human. Her tall, dark, and jaw-droppingly handsome neighbor had all the signs: he never came outside in the daytime, supposedly because of his “film industry” job; despite maintaining an incredible, perfectly muscled body he was not the slightest bit tan; he always had a parade of odd party guests coming and going at all hours; and damn if Jeanne had ever seen the man carrying so much as a takeout container, much less a bag of groceries.

Jeanne caught a glance of her reflection in the hallway mirror, and frowned. Next to Ian, she looked positively average. 5’6, green eyes, wavy brown hair pulled up in a messy ponytail, a cute white shirtdress hugging her curves but leaving her long legs bare. She’d thrown on a little mascara and blush today when she’d gotten ready, although she wasn’t sure why. Usually she just went without.

Licking her lips nervously, Jeanne watched his front door. It was late dusk, and her foxy neighbor usually made an appearance right about now. Not that she was stalking him or anything, she told herself. Just because the man was a complete panty-dropper didn’t mean that she was obsessed with him… just a concerned neighbor.

After all, it was her own safety she was worried about. For all Jeanne knew, he planned to break in one night and drain her body dry… of blood, she hastily amended. For after last night, Jeanne was completely certain that Ian Shulver was a vampire.

Taking one last look at the yard, Jeanne dropped the blinds. She couldn’t just hide in her house for the rest of her life with only her cat Sam for company. She’d already called in sick to work today, which of course hadn’t surprised anyone at the office. The partners at her law office were extremely accommodating, as they always were when it came to Jeanne.

The funny thing was, today she hadn’t been the slightest bit sick. She could have worked just fine, but she was too much of a sissy to leave the house; it was early spring, but the sky was still dark at the time she usually left for work. And dark was when bad things happened… bad things like supernatural, bloodsucking myths come to life.

Taking a deep breath, Jeanne snatched up her keys and straightened her clothes, avoiding another look in the mirror. There was absolutely no reason to be fussing over her appearance, just like there was nothing to fear in walking from her front door out to her car. She was being extremely silly. Ian had never given her a second glance before, and if she kept her cool he wouldn’t do it now either.

Letting out the breath, Jeanne pasted a smile on her face and opened the door. Before she even got it all the way open, she squawked and tried to slam the door closed, but a black leather-clad foot foiled her attempt. She looked at the partially closed door, then at the foot. After a long moment she sighed and opened the door again to reveal Ian Shulder in all his magnificence.

Jeanne simply stared for a minute, taking in his perfectly mussed dark hair, high-end white tee shirt, tight dark-wash jeans, and the devilish grin on his face. His eyes were such a light blue that they seemed to snare her, keeping her from bolting. And that jawline… Jeanne just wanted to lick him from head to toe.

“Going somewhere?” he asked, his voice a deep purr.

Jeanne cleared her throat and tore her gaze from his, running a nervous hand over her hair. That crisp British accent of his made her heart falter for a beat. Jesus, the man was too hot to be true.

“I, uh… I was just going to get some dinner. I’m, um, out of groceries. So I’m just, you know…” Jeanne trailed off, waving a hand at the black sedan parked in her driveway.

He looked skeptical, but merely cocked his head and nodded.

“Funny that you say that. I’m actually starving right now.”

The corners of his mouth lifted in amusement, giving Jeanne a chill that had nothing to do with the room temperature.

“I didn’t know you eat,” Jeanne blurted. “I mean, I’ve never seen you, um… I guess I figured you were on a special diet or something.”

Ian took a step in, forcing Jeanne to take a nervous step back. He leaned against the doorway casually as if it were something he did every day. Jeanne swallowed again. In a horror movie, this was the part where she should run away screaming. And yet… she stayed. A little voice inside her head asked what she really had to lose, after all.

“I am on a special diet, but I would make an exception. For you, that is,” Ian said, his eyes down her body before returning to meet her gaze. Jeanne flushed all over, confused.

“Oh, um… no, that’s okay. I really have to get going. I have somewhere to be,” she stammered, holding up her keys as proof of her intention to leave.

“A hot date?” he asked, giving her another appraising look. He was really going to need to stop looking at her like that or she might do something foolish.

“Err… sure. Yes. Super hot. Sooooooo I can’t be late!” she said, waving her hands in a shooing motion.

“Really. I was sure you were avoiding me,” he said, taking another step in toward her. Jeanne backed right up against a decorative bench, nearly falling over.

“Why would I avoid you?” she asked, her voice rising with alarm.

“Maybe because you saw something you weren’t supposed to see? Last night, for instance?” he purred, reaching out and running a warm fingertip down her forearm. Damn! Apparently he’d seen her crouched beside her car during his little… display. She’d really thought herself well-hidden.

“I won’t tell anyone,” Jeanne whispered, her breath catching. “I know…” she trailed off, terrified.

Ian casually turned and closed Jeanne’s front door, snapping the lock closed.

“What do you know, Jeanne?” he asked lightly, his accent stretching her name to sound like genie.

“I know what you are and… and I kn
ow that that man… that man was a bad man. I recognized him from the news,” she said hastily, licking her lips. His gaze narrowed for a second, following the moist swipe of her tongue and lingering on her mouth for a long moment.

It had her thinking of the previous night, of how Ian had snapped the pedophile’s neck as neatly as a twig and then pressed his face to the villain’s neck. Jeanne had barely seen a hint of fangs before Ian had started to drink in long, straining pulls. His meal had lasted less than a minute, and apparently he was a very neat eater because there had hardly been any blood at all.

Jeanne looked up into Ian’s eyes, hoping he would see that she was sincere. She was surprised to find him giving her that smile again, just the barest lift of lips. Funny that it made her stomach flip flop, because she’d probably just spoken her last words.

“Okay,” Ian said simply. He stepped up close, making Jeanne shiver in fear, but then simply stepped past her and went into the living room. He flopped down on her couch as if it were perfectly natural, and as if he hadn’t just admitted to being a vampire.

“O-okay?” she asked, wondering if she should make a run for it. If only that little part of her didn’t want so much to stay... she found herself walking towards him as if bespelled, but she knew it was her own doing.

“Yes. It makes things much easier when you already know my… nature,” he said obliquely, patting the seat next to him on the couch.

“Things?” Jeanne repeated, feeling ridiculously like a parrot.

“Are you quite alright?” he asked, giving her another once-over. As if he were checking her for visible head wounds or something.

“Wait… um. Do you mean that you’re not going to kill me?” Jeanne asked, baffled. Ian let out a deep bark of laughter, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

“Kill you? Why the hell would I want to do that? There are much more interesting things I’d like to do with you, Jeanne,” he drawled slowly.

“Well, isn’t that what you do?”

“Who?” he asked, as if confused.

“Vampires!” Jeanne said in a harsh whisper. She even looked around to check that they weren’t being observed. Silly, because she was pretty sure Sam the cat wasn’t going to tell anyone Ian’s secret.

“Ohhhh. No, generally we do not kill humans. I made a special exception for Mr. VanDeter. Found him lurking around a playground after all that talk of how he’d changed. Didn’t even like kids anymore, he told me. Just wanted to check and make sure his treatments were still working.”

Grim amusement flashed over Ian’s face, but he waved the topic away. Jeanne took a moment to ogle him before shaking a mental finger at herself. She was obviously losing her mind right now, thinking sexy thoughts about… him. Even if he weren’t a vampire, he was out of her league. Hell, he was out of everyone’s league.

“Anyway, even if it were in my nature, I wouldn’t kill you,” he said. “Really it works out best this way.”

“Does it? Work out best, I mean?” Jeanne said. Ian was probably going to think she was a blathering idiot, the way she just kept repeating his words. She honestly didn’t know what else to say, though.

“Well, yes. I’ve been trying to figure you out since the day I moved in next door. Sizing you up, you know.”

  “For what?” Jeanne asked, frowning.

“Well, I have planned to seduce you for some time. It was just a matter of deciding whether you were discreet enough for my needs,” he said. Reaching out, he brushed two hot fingertips against her jawline, next to her ear. Her heart kicked into a frenzied beat, and her whole body went hot as lava. Her mouth was suddenly dry as she met his ice-blue gaze.

“I-I would never tell anyone. You have to know that, Ian,” Jeanne said softly. She meant it, with every fiber of her being.

She was rewarded with that quirked smile again. Ian ran his hand over her shoulder and down her arm, taking her hand. Jeanne tried to suppress the little gasp that slipped out at the gently calloused caress.

“I like that little noise, Jeanne. Will you make it every time I touch you, or just when I’m pleasuring you?” he asked, reaching up to brush back a wavy lock of hair that had escaped her ponytail.

At that, she was truly floored. Before she even knew what she was doing, Jeanne had flung herself halfway into his lap and pressed her mouth against his, hard.

He tensed for the barest moment, and then let out a chuckle that quickly turned into a groan. Sliding his hands around her waist, Ian pulled her closer so that she fully straddled his lap. A second later her hair sprung free, soft waves tumbling down around their faces.

There was nothing tentative about the way his oh-so-bitable lips moved against hers, and within a minute he was nibbling at her lips to get her to open more fully to him. Jeanne gave a tiny moan, opening her mouth to let Ian penetrate her completely. He lapped at her tongue, almost teasing, urging her to give back. Her tongue darted out and touched his teeth, and she pulled back suddenly.

“Are you okay?” Ian asked breathlessly, his eyes searching her face.

“It’s just,” was her embarrassed reply, “Your …um…”

“Oh, yes,” he said, nodding as if she were being perfectly sensible. “I can fully control my fangs. I won’t bite you. Unless you want that, of course,” he said, his smile teasing.

“Can I see them?” Jeanne asked, flushing deeply.

“God, yes,” he said, and opened his mouth to bare his teeth. There was a slick sound of flesh on flesh, and two perfectly shaped fangs dropped into place. Jeanne gave a little gasp, and Ian pulled her hips against his body encouragingly.

“Can… can I lick them?” Jeanne asked, the words out of her mouth before she’d even thought of them. Ian growled at her a little bit, but it seemed positive.

“How the hell are you not in some vampire’s harem already?” he asked, raking his eyes over her.

“Wait,” she said with a frown, “you have a harem?” For some reason, she didn’t like the idea of sharing very much.

“I don’t, but some men do. I believe there are human men with harems as well,” he said distractedly, his eyes having found her cleavage.

  “Oh,” Jeanne said, relaxing.

“Please tell me you weren’t teasing about licking my fangs. It’s a remarkably pleasurable sensation,” he said, the playful smile back and undiminished by his fangs.

Jeanne smiled and leaned forward, brushing her lips against his and intending to explore his fangs. But he kissed her again first, more carefully this time. She kissed back ever so gently, and when she ran the tip of her tongue over one of his eyeteeth, he let out a growl of appreciation and pressed against her even harder.

She did it again, and he bucked underneath her hips, grinding against her. If Jeanne had any doubt before, now she could feel the evidence of his desire… and it felt pretty sizeable. Before she could blush at her thoughts she felt his hands brush her chest, unbuttoning her dress from the top down.

Soon she was down to her bra and panties, kissing him wildly and gyrating atop his lap like a heathen. Her bra melted away under his practiced touch, and his hands came up to cup each breast.

“I knew they would be perfect,” he rumbled, rubbing his thumbs against her already-taut nipples. Jeanne cried out and arched her back, pressing further into his touch.

Ian gave her a sultry look before leaning down and flicking his tongue against her right nipple, testing. A garbled curse sprang from Jeanne’s mouth, and Ian chuckled as he switched to test the sensitivity of the left one. Molten lines of pleasure streamed down from her breasts, pooling hotly at the juncture of her thighs. She felt like she might come just like this if he would just…

As if sensing the direction of her thoughts Ian pulled a blanket from the couch, spreading it out on the floor. Pulling Jeanne into his arms, he moved to settle them both on the blanket. He rolled her over onto her back, splaying her wide so that he could admire her further.

Jeanne made a little hmpfh of displeasure and
Ian grinned, drawing a fingertip from her collarbone down to her navel. She squirmed a little, but he trapped her with his leg and continued his exploration. His fingertip brushed the lacy edge of her panties before dipping down to brush just above her wetness.

“You are a tease!” Jeanne accused, glaring at him.

“I’ll try to be better,” Ian laughed, and moved his leg so he could strip off her panties. Tossing them aside, he looked at her nest of delicate, dark curls.

“Sorry, I didn’t know this was going to happen. I would have shaved,” Jeanne said, giving him a wry smile.

“I’m glad you didn’t. I’ve been around for a lot longer than that particular trend, and I don’t really favor it. But this,” he said, brushing that deliciously hot fingertip over her mons, “this is perfection.”

Jeanne bit her lip as he ran that fingertip back and forth over her slit, not quite a caress but still stoking the flames of her passion. It had been so long since she’d last been touched, and now this angelic devil was driving her to the brink of insanity. Let it come, she thought.

But instead of slipping his finger deeper, he shifted back until he was sprawled out on the floor with his face shockingly close to the juncture of her thighs. He nuzzled her softly, the tip of his nose making her writhe.

Only then did he gently part her with his hands and give her one long, soft lick. Every muscle in Jeanne’s body tensed, coiled. He flicked the tip of his tongue against her clitoris in eager strokes, and she found herself trying to hold back the oncoming storm, trying to savor the best thing she’d ever felt.

His mouth pulled back for a second, and she groaned in frustration.

  “Jeanne?”

“Mmm?” she responded, her brow furrowing.

  “Do you trust me?”

  “Mmmmmhmmmm,” she moaned, desperate.
