Witch School Dropout: A Witch Squad Cozy Mystery #7 Page 27

“That really stinks though that your old boss passed away,” he said.

I winced. Char and Mr. Bailey had decided to keep that little piece of information to themselves. Only the Witch Squad and Mercy’s immediate family knew the truth. “Yeah, but he’ll be with me in spirit.”

“So whatever happened to the guy that you used to work with? Louis?” he asked.

I cast my line again and reeled it in slowly. “Oh, Louis is in some trouble right now for tampering with evidence. I’m not sure what will happen to him.”

“So you’re working alone?” asked Corey.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ll probably have to hire someone. Char will help me for awhile until we get everything figured out.”

Corey nodded. “Well, I’m really happy for you.”

  “Thanks, Corey.”

“And I’m really happy that you decided to spend the day with me.” He put his free arm around my shoulder.

Sparks of electricity radiated from his touch. I put my head on his shoulder. “I’m really happy too.”

  Mercy

“Is that the last of it?” I asked as I shoved a garbage bag of bedding into the backseat of my car.

Jax nodded. “That’s the last of it,” she squealed. Her energy was contagious. It emanated off of her like heat waves off the sun. “I can’t believe we’re all moving in together!”

“I can’t believe your mother allowed it,” I admitted.

Jax giggled. “I didn’t really give her a choice. I’m going to be eighteen in a month. Besides, there’s only a month of school left and then it’s summer vacation. I don’t think she really knew what she was going to do with me all summer anyway.”

“Well, whatever reason she said yes, I’m glad.”

“Me too. I can’t wait, this is going to be so much fun! It’s like we’re starting on a whole new adventure!”

I laughed. “Habernackle’s won’t be much different than the dorms, except we’ll have to share a room with Sweets, too.”

“But eventually we’ll get our own place. It’s so exciting!” she gushed.

I nodded. “Yeah, it’ll be pretty sweet having our own place,” I agreed. I slammed the back door shut and slid in behind the wheel. My seat was shoved up as far as it would go and my knees crammed up against the steering wheel. “Get in,” I hollered at her through the open window.

She practically skidded across the hood of the car. “Come on. Sweets and the girls are going to beat us down there!”

I laughed. “They aren’t going to beat us down there, they haven’t even pulled out of their parking spot yet,” I said and pointed at Sweets’ car across the parking lot.

“Well then let’s beat them there,” Jax said with a smile.

  “You’re really excited, aren’t you?”

She looked at me incredulously. Her blue eyes widened to the size of silver dollars. “Well, yeah!” she exclaimed.

I pulled out of the parking spot and drove away. The wind whipped at my auburn air, sending it cascading around my shoulders in little waves. When Winston Hall was in my rearview mirror, I turned to Jax. “You know the only thing that would make this better is if you had your powers.”

She frowned. “I know. I can’t believe that I’m never going to get them. Not even for my eighteenth birthday.”

I shrugged. “Gran put a curse on you. Curses can be lifted.”

“They can? Then why didn’t my grandmother reverse the spell years ago?”

  “I don’t think it’s that easy, Jax.”

She looked out her window. “Do you think your grandmother would undo the curse for me?”

I laughed as I followed the road down the long winding path. “Doubtful. Gran still seems pretty jaded about your grandmother killing my grandfather. She’s not going to be any help.”

Jax leaned her head back against the head rest and pounded her small fists on her thighs. “See, I’ll never get my powers!”

I looked at her then. A mischievous smile spread across my face. “It’s a good thing you’ve got the Witch Squad in your corner.”

Her eyes brightened. “You think you can help me get my powers back?”

“I don’t know, but we can sure try!”
