Surely he wasn’t talking about me?

“Now, be extra careful getting dressed so you don’t mess up your hair or your face.”

  “I will.”

Marcel pulled the cape off me and brushed some cut hair from the back of my neck and my shirt. “Have a ball tonight, and I hope I see you again!”

I climbed out of the chair and thanked Marcel once again before exiting the salon. When I got in the car and saw what time it was, I realized I would need to hurry. Luckily, I managed to not get a speeding ticket as I raced back to the mansion.

  20.

Once I arrived back home, I ran to the house and up the stairs. Grabbing the garment bag from where I’d hung it, I unzipped it and pulled out the gorgeous, black dress. After a moment’s hesitation, I decided that I needed to go commando for the night. As tight as I thought the dress might fit, I was afraid even a thong would show panty lines.

I quickly stripped naked and shivered as the cool material slid against my skin when I stepped into the dress. It fit my curves as snugly as I imagined it would. When I grabbed the zipper to slide it up the back, I realized in dismay that I wasn’t going to be able to get it all the way up no matter how much I twisted and contorted my body.

  “Great,” I muttered. “Now what?”

Just then, I heard a soft knock on my door. I shuffled over and opened it a crack to find Rosie, one of the maid, standing outside. “Mr. Weatherton sent me up to see if you needed any help getting ready.”

“Oh, thank goodness.” I ushered her in the room. “Can you zip me up? For the life of me, I couldn’t get the zipper all the way up.”

She grabbed the zipper and slid it the rest of the way up the dress. Since it was quite low cut in the back, she only had to slide it up the couple of inches that I couldn’t reach. After seeing how low it plunged in the back and the front, I was glad I’d decided not to wear any underwear before putting the dress on. Otherwise, I would’ve had to either try to take them off while still wearing the dress, or I would’ve had to take the dress off and start all over.

“You look very beautiful, Miss Katie.”

  “Thanks, Rosie.”

“I think Mr. Weatherton will like it very much.”

I turned to look at myself in the mirror. Despite the fanciness of the dress and my hair and make-up, I still saw the chubby, not-supermodel-skinny girl staring back at me. Why would he pick me when he could have his pick of any women around?

Slipping my feet into the heels that went with the dress, I thanked the maid for her help. One last glance in the mirror made me wish I had some glittery jewelry to accessorize my outfit, but nothing I had would pair with the flashy dress. I slid my phone and some tissues into a small, silver clutch and headed downstairs to the limo which I was sure was already waiting for me.

Stephen waited for me by the limo and opened the back door for me as I approached the long, sleek car. He tipped his hat to me. “Good evening, Miss Darling.”

I climbed into the back seat to find Jace already there waiting for me. He looked like a model who’d just stepped out of GQ magazine in his custom tailored Armani tux. From what I could see, the cut of it was perfect.

His deep, blue eyes met mine, and I felt a shiver race down my spine. I climbed into the limo, which was not an easy feat in a dress that clung to every curve like a second skin, and his gaze swept over me. From the undisguised flash of heat flaring in his eyes, I determined he liked what he saw.

“You’re late,” he said, his voice a bit hard as I slid into my seat. I cringed and started to apologize, but then he smiled. “But considering you were at the mercy of other people’s schedules today, I will let it slide.”

I took a deep breath of relief and settled into the seat beside Jace. The interior of the limo was spacious and could easily fit several more people in the soft, supple leather seats.

“Here, I have a present for you.”

Jace handed me a flat, black velvet box with a red ribbon wrapped around it. With questioning eyes, I took the box and slid my finger underneath the ribbon to separate it from the box. Pushing the small button in the front caused the lid to pop open, and I gasped.

“I thought they would be the perfect accessory for your dress.”

Inside the box lay a set of glittering ruby and diamond earrings and a matching pendant on a shiny, gold chain. They likely cost more than a year’s tuition at my college.

Finding my voice, I glanced over at Jace. “They are so beautiful, but I can’t possibly accept something so expensive.”

Jace batted away my protest with his hand. “Of course you can. Let me help you with the necklace.”

He took the gleaming necklace from the box and placed it around my neck, fastening it in place. With shaking hands, I removed the earrings one by one and put them on. I couldn’t believe he’d bought me something so gorgeous…and so expensive. What did it mean?

A bottle of champagne chilled in a nest of ice within a gleaming silver bucket near Jace’s knee. He grabbed a glass from a wooden rack affixed to the side of the limo and handed it to me. Pulling the frosty bottle from its cold resting place, he popped the top.

I half expected it to foam and shoot out like I’d always seen on television, but it didn’t. He poured a little in my glass and then grabbed another champagne flute from the glass rack and poured some for himself.

  “Are we celebrating?”

He grinned at me and just for moment, I caught a peek of the boy he’d likely been before money and power had come to him.

“Just starting the party a little early.”

  “We’re going to a party?”

“A gala. It’s a big charity event held every year. The Ladies’ Auxiliary hosts it. Each year, they bequeath a different charity.”

I must’ve looked a bit worried at the prospect of being at a charity gala surrounded by the city’s rich and powerful because Jace reached down and patted my knee.

“Don’t worry. It’s just an hour or so of mingling, drinking champagne, and eating the tiny hors d'oeuvres the caterers carry around on trays.”

An hour? Maybe I could just stand at Jace’s side and look pretty. What else could I do? I didn’t belong in his crowd. What on earth could I talk about to anyone for an hour?

“They have a dinner, but I never stay for it. The catering is usually subpar. The chairwoman of the Auxiliary insists on using a company that’s owned by a family member. So we’ll stay and mingle for a bit and then get the hell out of there.”

We pulled up to the front of the swanky hotel where the gala was being held. A soft breeze ruffled my hair as Stephen opened the limo door and held out his hand to help me from the car. Jace followed and took my arm, leading me past the half-bowing doorman and through the gilded entrance of the hotel.

The lobby glistened and glittered with crystal and gold and ornate mirrors. Elegantly dressed people who were likely headed to the gala, along with a few who looked to be out of town tourists, mingled in the huge area which was dotted with plush white chairs and settees grouped together in intimate arrangements.

Jace nodded or spoke to a few people as he led me to the ballroom. ‘After passing a hugely pregnant lady, Jace muttered under his breath, “Like the world needs another one of those.”

My heart fell at his words. It wasn’t just what he said, but the almost venomous tone of his voice as he spoke. I’d always dreamed of having children. Would this be something I’d have to give up if Jace and I ended up together? From the sound of his voice, not only did he not want to have children, but he actually despised them as well.

I tried not to let it bother me as we glided into the large, elegantly decorated ballroom filled with the city’s most rich and powerful. Despite my feelings for Jace, which no matter how much I tried to deny it to myself were deep and plentiful, the odds of us actually becoming a couple and being together for the rest of our lives were not good. Having a child with him was not likely something I had to worry about.

Looking around the room, I had to admit to myself that I’d be lucky if the relationship, if you could call it that, between Jace and me lasted until I graduated from college. The women in the room were mostly all of a type.

Oh sure, there were a few older women who either were the source of the money or they’d been fortunate enough to find a man who held love above all else and didn’t believe he needed to trade his wife in for a newer model every few years like he did a car.

However, a large number of the women in attendance were decades younger than their escorts, had legs that just didn’t quit, enhanced breasts, and perfectly coiffed hair. These women knew their assets and used them to every advantage.

Jace introduced me to everyone we came in contact with, though he used no identifier to signify exactly who I was to him. Other women were introduced as wife, girlfriend, fiancé, or even escort, but I was simply Katie. The men would shake my hand or nod politely.

Most would barely glance at me before returning their attention to Jace. A few decided my ample cleavage warranted a more thorough inspection. I wouldn’t tell if Jace was proud I’d garnered such attention of if he inwardly wanted to punch the men for their lecherous glares. Considering he’d picked out the dress, I felt he only had himself to blame.

The majority of the women lingering on the arms of their men dismissed me after a cursory glance. Apparently, I either didn’t meet with their approval, or I didn’t pose a threat to them. Either way, by the time we’d reached the half-way point of our time at the gala, I’d begun to feel quite uncomfortable and out of place.

I didn’t belong in this group of power brokers and their plastic women. I knew nothing of the business they spoke and very little about the fashion designers and trends the women gushed over. Besides that, the heels I was not used to wearing were killing my feet. I wasn’t sure if I could stand another thirty minutes of any of it.

  Jace squeezed my arm.

“I see someone I need to talk to about an important business matter. I need to catch him before another group of people swallow him up. Stay here, I’ll only be a few minutes.”

Before I could protest, he shoved his still full glass of champagne in my hand and hurried away.

“Great,” I muttered under my breath. “Just great.”

I was contemplating an escape to the bathroom, despite Jace’s comment to stay in my spot when I heard a familiar voice behind me.

  Tiffany.

  Ugh.

“It’s true. We’ve been dating for some time. We went to college together you know. You ought to see the inside of his place! You’d never believe your eyes at some of the stuff he has in his private room.”

My heart kicked up a notch, and a flash of anger burned in my gut. I wanted to run away, but my feet seemed nailed to the floor. I didn’t know if she knew I was standing there near her, but I suspected she did.

“He is so hot!” gushed one of her companions.

“And so rich!” said another, which initiated a round of high pitched giggles.

“And he’s all mine,” boasted Tiffany.

Pain lanced through me, and I blinked my eyes against the tears threatening to fall.

Another of Tiffany’s friends piped up, “But Tiff, if he’s all yours, then why did he bring another date?”

“Oh, her.” Tiffany’s voice dripped with derision and then she laughed. “That’s just his assistant. She’s some poor girl whose parents died, and he’s helping her by hiring her to work for him so he can pay her college tuition. His own personal charity case, so to speak.”

“Well, they certainly looked chummy to me,’ said the friend who’d questioned why I was with Jace instead of Tiffany.

“Get real. Do you honestly think he could possibly be attracted to that cow? I could fit three of me into that tent she’s wearing!”

  That bitch!

Before I’d realized what I was doing, I whirled around to face her and her group of giggling companions who were all having quite a laugh at my expense. Everything seemed to be colored by a red haze.

  I didn’t think.

  I just acted.

One second, I stood there still, doing nothing, and the next second my arm came up and flashed out in Tiffany’s direction, sending the champagne in the flute Jace had handed me flying through the air. It splashed against Tiffany’s face and dribbled down between her expensive breasts.

She gaped at me as I calmly placed the glass on the tray of a waiter who chose the perfect moment to walk by me. I then turned on my heel and fled the ballroom amidst astonished stares and whispers. By the time I’d reached the sidewalk outside the glitzy hotel, my eyes were awash with tears that fell like rain in big, fat drops down my cheeks.

  “Katie.”

Oh god. Jace. He was going to be so pissed at me.

He grabbed me by the shoulders and spun me around.

  “What on earth…”

His words cut off when he spied the tears rolling down my face. Instantly, the storm brewing in his deep, blue eyes melted into concern. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and gently dabbed the tears on my cheeks.

“What happened, Katie? Are you okay?”

“I want to leave. I want to leave right now.”

My voice shook with both anger and tears.

  “Okay, Katie.”

Jace pulled his cell phone from his pocket and called Stephen to come pick us up.

“He’ll be right here. He’s just around the corner.”

Sure enough, the sleek, black limo pulled into view and came to a stop in front of us. Stephen got out and hurried around the car to open the door. I climbed in first and heard Jace tell Stephen just to drive around the neighborhood until otherwise instructed.

Once Jace had settled onto the seat beside me and the limo had pulled away from the curb, he turned to me.

“Okay. Out with it. You’ve been acting a little strange and distant for a couple of weeks and then tonight you throw champagne in Tiffany’s face and storm out of the ballroom. And when I come outside to see what happened, you’re standing on the sidewalk bawling your eyes out.”

All of the pent up anger, fear, and heartbreak of the past couple of weeks came pouring out as I told him about finding Tiffany naked in the rec room and about the conversation I’d overheard at the gala. By the time I finished, his mouth had set in a hard line, and a muscle in his jaw twitched in anger.

I wiped my wet cheeks with the back of my hand.

“I thought the contract we signed meant something.”

Jace took a deep breath and then took my hand. The storms that had gathered in his eyes outside the hotel had returned in full force. It raged within his eyes, turning them gray. I expected to be blasted and tensed with anticipation at the tongue lashing I was about to receive.

  Instead, he surprised me.

“Oh Katie, I am so sorry. When I checked the video feed after I got the alert on the rec room door, I only saw Tiffany. I had no idea you saw her.”

I jerked my hand out of his.

“The problem is that you didn’t know I saw her?”

  Was he for real?

He frowned and reached out and re-captured my hand.

“No, Katie. That’s not what I meant. If I had known you’d seen her, I would’ve explained. I’m not sure how she found out about the room, but somehow she did. So she dropped by for a visit before I’d arrived home and took it upon herself to disrobe and wait for me in the rec room. As soon as I got home, I went straight there and kicked her out.”

“So you didn’t have sex with her?”

The look on his face would’ve been comical if I hadn’t been so upset.

“No. Absolutely not. I only invited her to dinner that one night to appease my parents. I’d hoped your presence would deter her, but it seems to have had the opposite effect. I’m so sorry you saw that. Why didn’t you say something?”

“I thought you wanted her more than me. I didn’t want to confront you just to be
told you’d found someone better to play with.”

“Oh Katie. No. I would never do that to you. I couldn’t.”

He cupped my face in his hands and brushed his thumbs under my eyes to wipe away a fresh spurt of tears.

“There is no way I’d hurt you like that. I think… I think I’m falling in love with you.”

In that moment, I’d swear my mouth fell open in shock.

  Did I hear him right?

  “You what?”

Instead of answering me, he leaned in and crushed his mouth upon mine and thrust his tongue inside forcefully, devouring me in lustful hunger. I unzipped his pants and found the fat head of his cock sticking up past the elastic waistband of his briefs. I shoved the front of his briefs downward, freeing his hardness and allowing it to stand at throbbing attention. Clasping my fingers around his hard shaft, I slowly slid downwards, releasing him long enough to cup and massage his balls before slowly sliding back up his stiff cock.

Moans echoed against the limo walls when his hand slid up my soft thighs under my dress and cupped my mound, rubbing my pussy through my silky panties as I stroked his hardness.

“Oh fuck,” he groaned as his fingers glided across the wet material and discovered the sign of my desire. A finger slipped inside and stroked up my slit, sending flames of pleasure burning through my body.

  “Get over here.”

He grabbed me and pulled me onto his lap. Driven by lustful desire, I straddled him, putting my knees on either side of him on the seat, the need to feel his hard cock thrusting inside me all consuming. He pushed my clingy dress higher up my hips.

  “Sit on my cock, Katie.”

Reaching down, I pulled the flimsy material of my thong out of the way and plunged downwards, impaling myself on his thick cock. My hands gripped the seat behind his shoulders and I rode him hard, slamming my pussy relentlessly down on his throbbing shaft. His fingers dug into the round globes of my ass as he shoved his hips upwards, ramming into me as he met my desperate thrusts.

Whimpering and moaning, I ground my pussy against him. Need raged through my body like fire as my clit rubbed against him with each down stroke. The seat squeaked as I bucked on top of him, reveling in the feel of his thickness stretching my pussy as I fucked myself with his hard cock. Sweat beaded on my skin as I frenziedly rode him, driven by the burning need that ravaged my body, screaming for release.
