I also relied heavily on three biographies—Jackson Pollock: An American Saga by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, To a Violent Grave: An Oral Biography by Jeffrey Potter, and Lee Krasner: A Biography by Gail Levin—as well as Ruth Kligman’s book, Love Affair: A Memoir of Jackson Pollock. I am grateful to the East Hampton Town Clerk’s office for information on the history of the town police, and to Prudence Carabine, née Talmage, a twelfth-generation Bonacker, for preventing me from embarrassing myself regarding the nature and character of her community and its inhabitants.

The Huntting Inn, now a year-round establishment, continues to serve hungry and thirsty travelers, but the Sea Spray burned to the ground in 1978. Its cottages, which now belong to the Village of East Hampton, are still sought-after summer rentals.

This is a work of fiction, in which historical figures and invented characters interact. Some of the events described actually happened; others are pure fantasy, products of the author’s imagination.
