Dad shaking hands with Otto Stone and the ever-present son, me, not too far from the action.

The start of the 1956 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. Dad is on the front row in the number 8 Maserati and that’s me at the front of the Zephyr. (Autopics)

I’m not sure if it was genes more than environment. Dad was a great racing driver and I think he could have been among the best in the world, but for me it was those early years with the cars and race tracks that inspired me to go racing. (Autopics)

One of my earliest races in 1964 at Hume Weir in the Mini that Dad had built for me. It’s a pity the picture isn’t in colour because it looked a treat with its silver paint and black wheels. (Autopics)

I really enjoyed Formula Three – the cars were quick and great to drive. This is the DART GRD back in 1973 when I came second in the championship because they had double points in the final race.

Harry Stiller was one of the nicest blokes I drove for and I have a lot to thank him for. These early drives in the Formula Atlantic car paved the way for our entry into Formula One in 1975.

Driving a V6-powered car in Formula 5000 was a great learning experience. We were able to race and beat cars with much more power, although we didn’t do the full series.

Part of my dream was to race in Formula One, and I made my debut with Custom Made/Harry Stiller Racing in 1975, sharing a team with James Hunt, which is where we developed such a strong friendship. Harry eventually decided to flee Great Britain to get away from the tax man, so the team didn’t even survive the season. (LAT Photographic)

I joined Embassy Hill a few races after Harry fled, and while I got on well with Gra
ham Hill the team wasn’t very functional. I did get my first World Championship points so I felt I was getting somewhere. (LAT Photographic)

I didn’t get into racing for the fame, but it certainly had some benefits. Talking to the Duke of Edinburgh before a grand prix was just one of those perks, although I was probably more anxious about getting into the car and going racing than talking to him. (LAT Photographic)

Graham Hill was a difficult man to drive for. I was so lucky not to be with the team when he crashed his plane and all onboard died – I could have been there. (LAT Photographic)

The Surtees TS19 had so much potential, but it all fell away because the team wasn’t run very well. Look at the narrow cockpit – this is the car before they gave me the bubble in the side so I could change gears. It was a very frustrating season. (LAT Photographic)

Because I walked away from my contract with Surtees I had nothing on in Europe, so I did the Rothmans International Series in Australia during February with Teddy Yip’s Theodore Racing. I won one of the four rounds and finished third on debut here at Oran Park for the Australian Grand Prix. (Autopics)

After getting back into Formula One with Shadow in 1977, I did some Can-Am races and won my first-ever title in the Haas-Hall Racing Lola in 1978 when I felt like I was untouchable. I called it cruise and collect, but it wasn’t that easy. They were fabulous cars to drive and I loved racing in America.

My partnership with Williams almost didn’t happen, but when it did I knew right away it was the best option for me. In my fourth race for the team at Long Beach we were challenging for the lead when electrical problems dropped me off the pace. I drove much of the race with a collapsed front wing. (LAT Photographic)

Frank Williams was a great man to drive for, and he even got me out running with him at times. He loved his running, but he loved his racing even more, and his mind was perfectly suited to building the team that went on to dominate the sport for many years. (LAT Photographic)

I didn’t spend much time with my rivals, but James Hunt was an exception. He was such good company and a great bloke. I think he was also a better driver than many gave him credit for. (LAT Photographic)

After winning the Canadian Grand Prix I left the champagne shaking to others. We were sponsored by Saudi, and I felt I needed to respect their no alcohol beliefs … in public at least. (LAT Photographic)

Beverley was an important part of those early years of racing. We had a pretty fiery up-and-down relationship that eventually ended in the 1980s. (LAT Photographic)

My championship year and the FW07 was a great car. Patrick Head and his team of engineers built the best handling car in the field and it was enough for us to beat the much more powerful Ferraris and Renaults, whose challenge failed for a number of reasons. The biggest challenge was, however, from Nelson Piquet in a Brabham and here he is buried in the pack. (LAT Photographic)
