“These people abducted me and forced me to stay here and care for the children. There are others like me here. Just as there are other children.”

“How long have you been here?” Sabrina felt her voice soften and realized this woman was just as much a victim as she had once been.

“I’ve been here for over four months. By now I’m sure I’ve lost my job, my home and everything I own.” She broke down. “I have nothing and nowhere to go.”She would have somewhere to go. Sabrina would see to it, just as soon as she introduced her to Duncan or Ian. She must be sure the woman wasn’t lying before she trusted her fully.

Sabrina glanced out the door just in time to see Daniel change from his beast to a human. He took three steps toward her and a blast of light struck him in the chest. Sabrina screamed as Luke ran to his aid only to suffer the same fate. Sabrina watched with horror as her mates fell to their knees before landing on their faces. Anger like she’d never felt before in her life filled her as she stood staring at the still forms of her mates. With barely a thought, she spun in a circle and shifted at the same time. This time, she was no cat or any other four-legged beast.

The woman behind her whimpered as she gathered the children close and backed away. “Don’t hurt the children.”

“I don’t intend to.” She waved her arm…or what used to be her arm. Now it looked strange. Different. It was longer and thinner than her arm. Not to mention the fact that it was several shades lighter. What the hell? “Go sit in the corner and keep the kids out of harm’s way.”

Paige merely nodded as she took the twins by the hand and pulled them away from the door.

Sabrina had to duck to exit the cabin. Whatever she was now, it was a lot taller than her usual self. Turning, she almost ducked away from the ball of energy someone shot her way.

The sound of explosions sounded all around her as the energy hit her and she absorbed it into her body. Whatever she was, they weren’t ready for her. She glanced to her right and saw another creature approach. Nearly eight feet tall, with light caramel skin and light brown hair, the female ran toward her.

“What the hell is this?” Samantha’s voice came from the tall creature who stood before her, her arms out to her sides. “And their energy shots don’t affect me.”

“Me either.” Sabrina glanced back to her mates. “But they took Luke and Daniel down.” She fought the urge to cry. She couldn’t lose it now. She had to go after the asshole who killed her mates.

“They won’t be down long. Aiden took a shot and was down for about two minutes. The others aren’t so lucky.” Samantha grinned. “But watch out when they get up. Quinn’s been trying to get shot. Aiden loves the side affect.”

“Side aff—” Sabrina stopped and stared as first Luke, then Daniel each pushed themselves to their feet. They each stared down at themselves as their bodies shifted and grew. “Hell, they were tall enough as humans.”

Beam after beam of energy hit them as they stood looking down at themselves.

“Grandmama’s book said once the mating ritual was complete, it would change their DNA and they would be just as pure in blood as we are.”

  “But pure blood what?”

“Does it matter?” We’re really the only ones who can take these people out. The others have no defense against them.” Samantha grinned. “What I think is great is the fact that they have no defense against us.”

  “Yeah, whatever we are.”

Sabrina followed Samantha through the camp, conjuring balls of light and sending them to incapacitate those who would harm them.

None of them had to hide. The more the energy slammed into them, the stronger and more aggressive they became.

When the last man was down and hogtied, they each went to sit on the hood of a car and stare down at their new forms.

Quinn walked up, his forehead bleeding and leaned against Samantha as she crooned over him and tended his wounds. “I never was able to find someone to shoot me, dammit.” He looked around at them all. “Am I going to be the odd man out, the only one who’s not invited to this new club of yours?”

“Oh, shut up, you whiner.” Aiden flicked his finger and a ball of light slammed Quinn in the chest, knocking him from his feet.

Samantha glared at him. “You could have let him heal first.”

Aiden grinned and brushed a lock of hair from his forehead. “You know as well as I do there would be no living with him if I hadn’t done that.” He looked down at himself. “This is cool, but I hope I can still shift into other shapes. I’ll miss them if not.” Suddenly, he shifted into a dragon.

Sabrina recalled that Samantha said it was his favorite beast.

When he shifted back into a human again, he merely raised his brow.

“Come on, guys. It’s time to go home and while I think you all look great, the kids are going to be scared shitless.”

  Two weeks later…

Sabrina sat in her new home, reading another of her grandmother’s journals. Occasionally she glanced up, to peer out the window at the twins playing in the backyard. They started preschool in the morning and she couldn’t wait. She loved them to death, but the prospect of a little alone time appealed to her.

Glancing back down to the journal, her eyes widened. Twins? That didn’t make sense. She and Samantha weren’t twins. She read the passage again.

Every mated couple is blessed with twins at every birth. Don’t be surprised. You two shall have them as well. Your mother never allowed me to tell you this before because she didn’t want anyone to guess your origins. Yes, you are twins. Samantha is not the elder by one year, but by one minute. Live a full and happy life and enjoy your newfound power. You are not of this earth, but the people here have always called us fae.

  “Oh. My. God!”
