“How thick do you think I am, mate,” Jed muttered back.
“Well you do tend to get carried away sometimes.”
“Yeah, well sorry I can’t always keep my calm when a demon’s about to rip my head off, I…”
“Sssh,” Evan cut them both off. “We’re making too much noise.”
The only light in the tower shone from the very walls themselves, a dull red glow interspersed between the jumbled black rock. As Evan looked closely, he could see a thick coating of green slime on some of the rocks.
“I hate slimy demons too,” Jed said.
Evan’s hand strayed to the sword at his belt as they reached the top of the stone steps and a tight knot of anxiety burgeoned in his chest. He always felt a thrill of fear before battle.
The three of them were silent now as they emerged into the hall beyond, the dull red glow became even dimmer here and the darkness was near total. With his free hand Evan conjured a small fireball so he could see the path ahead. More slime coated the floor. If they weren’ careful they might slip on it.
The hall appeared to stretch for miles all around, but it was devoid of anything but bare stone.
Evan and Jed reached the end of the hall only to find a stone wall blocking the way forward.
“Maybe we should check around for a hidden door or something?” Evan suggested.
“Sounds like a plan,” Jed said.
Elijah stood several feet behind them, clutching an enchanted dagger in his hand as his golden eyes flitted from side to side nervously.
Jed moved over to the far wall, whilst Evan ran his hands over the cold stone in front of him, being careful not to touch the slime that trickled down like sticky gloop.
“Nothing here, mate,” Jed’s whisper cut through the darkness.
“Then where did he…” Evan trailed off as two sharp clicks echoed off the walls.
The demon had never left the room.
Evan whirled round, just in time to see the monstrosity careening toward him.
