Ken did. “It’s empty.”

“That’s right. That box used to contain the wedding bands I bought for Warren and me. I sold my ring before heading to the club.”

Dirk met Ken’s gaze. Ken’s breath hitched. By reflex, Dirk reached for Ken’s fingers. He massaged each one, waited until Ken relaxed.

“I don’t get it,” Ken said. “You really got rid of the ring?”

“Yeah, but instead of throwing it away, I got some cash for it. That box is a promise, Ken. Once we’re both ready…” He trailed off, keen to see Ken’s reaction.

Ken let out a laugh that sounded a little uncertain. “Don’t leave me hanging there, honey bear.”

“When the time comes, we’ll both go to the jeweler. Find a ring you like.”

Ken’s mouth hung open for a few entertaining seconds. Then Ken kissed him on the lips, waiting for him to take over. Gripping the back of Ken’s neck, Dirk responded. Tongues and teeth tangled. His shoulder ached a little, but it didn’t matter. The only that did matter was Ken’s warmth, surging through him. Ken had no idea how the prospect of him dying had gutted Dirk.

Seeing the stalker with a gun to Ken’s head… Dirk never wanted anything like that to happen again. Their recent brush with death taught Dirk to always keep his treasures close, not at an arm’s length.

“I’m so sorry,” Ken whispered, resting his forehead against Dirk’s.

Dirk gave the back of Ken’s neck a squeeze. “What are you apologizing for, baby?”

“For not telling you sooner, for being scared to tell you because I was fucking terrified.”

Feeling guilty, Dirk shook his head. “We’re past blame. We’ve both made mistakes, especially me. Thank you.”

“For what?” There was twinkle in Ken’s eye, but Dirk didn’t mind telling him.

“For sticking with me no matter how much of an asshole I was being, for believing in me, in us. Most of all, thank you for loving me.”

Ken fisted his shirt, his eyes blurring.

Oh, fuck. Dirk had been making Ken cry lately. It didn’t matter. He’d change that soon enough, because Dirk had all the time in the world to make amends.

“My life only started the moment you entered it,” Dirk said, closing his hand over Ken’s and giving it a squeeze. Pressed so close, he could hear Ken’s hammering heartbeats and his own, a contrast, beating steady because, for once, he harbored no doubts about their future.

Knowing what Ken wanted to hear, Dirk said simply, “I love you so fucking much, baby. All my life it feels like I’ve been drowning, but you’re my oxygen. Give me a second chance.”

Ken grinned, then brought their lips together for another kiss—slow, sweet and tender. Then Ken pulled away abruptly. Dirk’s fingers twitched. Fuck, he wanted to be out of the hospital so badly.

“Silly, Dirk. Get better already so we can move on to fun things.”

Dirk eyed him skeptically. “Are you talking sex? Is that all I mean to you?”

Laughing, Ken ruffled his head. “Of course not, baby.”

Ken trailed his hand down Dirk’s chest, his belly, and lingered a little longer on the bulge peering from beneath his hospital gown.

“We can’t,” Dirk protested. “Not here.”

Ken pretended looking shocked and offended. “Are you refusing a hand job from me? That’s a first.”

“Seriously?” Dirk asked, swallowing the lump in his throat. He should have seen this coming.

Naturally, Ken liked doing the opposite. He gave Dirk’s cock a squeeze, making him groan. Dirk felt the heat of Ken hand through the thin fabric. Ken’s touch alone had been enough to ignite all the nerves in his body, to make his cock harden. He shifted a little on the bed, hoping to discourage Ken and maybe put some sense back into him.

Although Dirk had to admit, he was half-uncomfortable and incredibly turned on at the same time. Ken responded by clambering over him and straddling him like it was the most natural thing in the world. Obsession and addiction, that summed up Ken, but there was also something else between them—life, love, and a future.

  “Baby,” Dirk warned.

Ken grinned from ear to ear. Of course, Ken didn’t listen. That was one of the reasons why Dirk couldn’t get enough of him, why Dirk loved him.
