“Kel, it’s time!” she called out plaintively, and the gang sprang into action.

Between contractions, Spencer hoisted the laboring woman easily up into his arms and carried her to Kel’s waiting limo. Missy instructed her guests to enjoy the rest of the party, thankful that they’d already had the gift exchange, and put Maggie in charge of the festivities, so that she could be at the hospital with her best friend. Chas, Missy and Spencer rode with Echo and Kel in the limo to the hospital, and Izzy, sitting unnoticed on the porch swing, watched them go. The rest of the guests came to the door to cheer and wave as the limo sped toward the hospital. After the guests had returned to the party, Izzy slipped off her shoes and headed for the beach, tears sparkling in her eyes as she realized that this was yet another holiday where she’d be alone.

While laboring was certainly no easy task, Missy was alarmed at her best friend’s pain and pallor. Echo, who was one of the toughest gals she knew, was doubled over in pain, and was so pale that she looked ghostly. The doctor came in for an exam, and when he left the room to speak with Kel, his face was grave.

“Mr. Kellerman,” he closed the door behind him. “There are some decisions that need to be made.”
