“Baby, you okay?”
“My leg hurts. It might be broken,” Meredith’s voice, pain filled.
Matt looked around. “Where’s Liz?”
Holly at him, tearfully. “She said she was going for help, while I stayed with Meredith.”
“We didn’t pass her on the road,” Eric said.
Matt said, “Okay, let’s get these two girls to the van and then to the hospital. I’ll pull the ATV out of the back and I’ll go ahead and see if I can find her. Hopefully, she stuck to the road and didn’t go wandering along any paths.”
Eric nodded. “Yes. Good plan. Whoever finds her, calls or texts the other one. Even if we’re out of range it will pop up when we are.” He looked at Holly and frowned. “Why did you let her go? You know the best thing to do is stay with the car in this kind of situation.”
“Yes, sir,” she said, meekly. “I really thought she was only going far enough to see if she could find reception. But it’s been…” her voice trailed off. “A few hours since she left.”
“Hours?” Eric exploded. “You’ve been sitting her for hours?”
“What should I have done?” Holly wailed. Then she whimpered, “My head hurts, don’t yell at me.”
“Hey, guys, can you discuss this later? I could use a hand with Meredith.”
“Shit,” Eric said.
Matt got there first. “Okay, Meredith, look at you, all damsel in distress. Lucky for you, there are three knights in denim jeans to help save you. Need to get you out of here before it gets dark.” He spoke soothingly because he could tell by the tremors shaking her she was about to lose it.
Eric arrived. “What’s the plan here? We going to tandem carry her up?”
Ethan nodded. “What you say, Meredith? Is it okay for us to carry you up?”
Meredith looked up at him with tear filled eyes. “I’m so glad you’re here. You can do anything that needs done.”
“That’s my good girl,” he said and kissed the top of her head. Matt loved to see the trust she had him in even when he said, “We’re going to try not to hurt you but it might. Scream if you have to, but try to miss my ear, okay? Scream in Eric’s, he’s half deaf anyway.”
She nodded, and Matt noticed her lip twitched a little. Good. That meant she wasn’t out of her mind with pain, at least.
“How can I help?” Holly fretted.
“As soon as we get her out, grab your purses, or whatever it is you gotta have. I’ll send a tow truck out for the car tomorrow. Right now we need to get you two checked out and find Liz.” Eric said. “Okay, Meredith, here we go.”
Ethan crawled in from the driver’s side and Matt and Eric stood outside. In less than five minutes, they had her up to the van and settled in the far back seat. Ethan settled beside her and held her while she sobbed in pain.
Matt pulled and bounced the small ATV out of the back of the spacious van, and spoke to Eric, “You head back that way. Hopefully, one of us will find her before dark. As late as its getting, I’ll probably just keep going and find a place to hole up for the night, instead of driving this back in the dark. Let me know if you find her. Get those girls to the hospital.”
“Hopefully, we will talk real soon. You have any idea how far it is to civilization on that side?”
Matt shook his head. “Another hour or so? If you don’t go wandering down any side roads or take a path.”
“She better be less than a half an hour up ahead of you. I swear, what was she thinking?” Eric growled and turned on the van.
“She was thinking she was going to get help when a deer ran in front of us and crashed us!” Holly glared at him. “The phones didn’t work and she wasn’t hurt. I really thought she was just going up the road a bit though, not be gone for hours.”
The three men exchanged a few more words, then Matt took off north on the ATV and Eric and Ethan headed south the way they’d came.
Chapter Nine
Matt drove the ATV down the darkening road, wishing the damn things came with mufflers. He couldn’t hear her if she called to him, he knew. Driving as far as he thought she could walk in a few hours, he felt it was about time to turn around and backtrack. He hadn’t heard she was a marathon runner or anything, so assumed the walking ability of a shook up, stressed out female needing help in his mileage estimate. Then he turned around and headed back to the crash site, slowing down and stopping every half a mile and calling. She had to either have gotten a ride, or walked down a side path. For what reason? He didn’t know. He’d been able to text Eric once and they hadn’t found her, and now he wasn’t in a reception range again.
All he could think about was getting her home safely. There were miles of woods and major rivers out here. She could be lost for a long time. If he didn’t find her in the next hour, he decided, he’d be calling the cops and sending for help. Last thing he wanted was her to be out her alone all night, and dusk was falling fast.
Stopping the ATV at a crossroads, he remembered there was a hunting cabin down the south side road. She wouldn’t know that, of course, but maybe she’d stumbled on it. He jumped off the ATV and jogged ahead a few feet, yelling, as he had every half-mile for the last ten, “Liz! Elizabeth!” Then he waited, listening for a sound.
“Help!” He heard back. “Help!”
Almost sinking to his knees in relief, he knew he found her.
* * *
Half an hour later, with Liz perched on the back of his ATV, he headed down to the hospital. He didn’t like driving this thing at night on a main road, but he couldn’t imagine how stressed out her family was, including her son and his, for that matter, stolidly holding down the home fort as always. Selfishly, all he wanted to do was take her to that cabin, paddle her adorable butt for being so foolhardy and then make love to her all night.
Once he found her, she’d rushed to him. “I was so lost. You found me!” Apparently she’d gone off the trail to answer a nature call and when she found the one she was on, thought it was the main road. She’d finally decided when it petered out into nothing that she messed up. She’d almost made it back to the main road, when she heard his engine noise and then his voice. Snuggling against him, she said it had been the best sound she’d ever heard.
Driving back, Matt felt overwhelmed with the idea that he loved her and would never let her go again. No, he didn’t want to raise another teenager, but for her, he would. He didn’t know the logistics of her moving or his travel itch. All he knew was that he wanted her in his life, bed and yes, over his knee. All of which he knew was ridiculous and probably just part of the adrenalin surge over the accident and the search. That’s all it was.
He needed to know for sure, though. He needed to know her.
Finally, coming to the edge of town, he stopped the ATV in front of a small hotel, handed her his phone, since hers was apparently dead, and said, “Call your family. Tell them you are fine and you and I are going to stay the night here and meet them tomorrow.”
Liz’s grey blue eyes met his and she said, clearly, “Yes, sir. I do to choose to stay with you.”
Chapter Ten
“Holly, if you ask me that again, I’m going blister your butt so hard you won’t be able to sit for a week,” Eric threatened, feeling at the end of his rope.
“I’m worried about Liz. And Matt. We should have heard something by now,” Holly fretted.
“I know you are. I am, too. You asking me every minute doesn’t change the fact that I don’t know.” The doctor had checked her out and said she was fine except for what would probably be a very sore chest where the seat belt and air bag saved her. He’d be eternally grateful for that, but he was stressed over his sister going missing, and his future sister-in-law in surgery.
“But, Eric, I can’t stand not knowing.”
“Holly, dammit, you are this close.” Eric’s palm itched. He probably needed to paddle her as badly as she apparently needed it. Where would they go, though? They were both stressed out, waiting to hear on Meredith
’s recovery and waiting to hear from Matt or Liz. What private place was there in the hospital?
Holly opened her mouth again, and he decided he didn’t care where. Just needed to find the first empty room. She was going over his knee and it was happening now.
“Ethan, we’ll be back in a few,” he threw over his shoulder, at his brother who stared at the wall and barely acknowledged him. Grabbing Holly’s hand, he pulled her out the waiting room door with him. Striding down the hall, he noticed she wasn’t protesting, but walking along like a docile child. They walked past the almost empty nurses’ station, and past a few patient rooms. There at the end of the hall was a ‘Closed for Renovation’ sign, and he pushed that door open.
It swung shut behind him as Holly began her token protest behind him, starting to drag her feet. She’d more than likely figured he wouldn’t spank her in the hospital. Now she knew. He couldn’t blame her for trying to pull away, he was planning to set her butt on fire, and he was darn sure she knew it.
“Eric! No! I don’t want a spanking! Please,” she began complaining as he walked into the third open room in the empty corridor, still holding her hand tightly.
“I told you to be quiet. Obviously you chose to disobey me,” he said calmly. He wanted to say, ‘You scared the shit out of me today. Now you are stressed and just begging for a good paddling, and I’d be lax as your husband if I didn’t give it to you.’
But he didn’t. He’d just focus on her mouth for now, and then later when they were all snuggled into bed and she wanted to talk about, like she always did, he’d explain then. He couldn’t get over how lucky he was that he had her to snuggle with tonight.
However, right now they were both too upset to have a very rational conversation. Four bags of some kind of concrete sat in a corner, and he hauled her over there, and then over his lap, pulling them both down with a thump.
Usually she accepted her spankings, more or less with as much dignity as someone could. Today she was twisting and howling like a cat. He hoped no one could hear. He hadn’t even gotten started yet, and was planning to give her exactly what they both needed.
One large hand slammed down on her bucking and twisting hips, and he heard her suck in her breath. Then let out a shouted, “No!” So he did it again. Must be what was needed.
He didn’t bother to take her pants down. He could make sure she felt it through them. No warm up, nothing but shock straight from her butt to her brain, he hoped. Quickly, he draped one of his legs over her already kicking ones, and tipped her ass up higher. Fleetingly, he wished her butt was bare. This would be a great position for him to peer down. But it would have to do, and really, could there be a finer ass, even clad in blue jeans.
His job right now was to relieve her stress, and his, he reminded himself as he caught her hand that tried to protect her bottom. Spanking were for the good of them both, as a unit.
For throwing her hand back however, he gave her four hard smacks on her thighs and then concentrated on her bottom. With her jeans on, he didn’t really have to worry much about controlling himself. She could take all he dished out, even though her sobs didn’t seem like she could.
“Please, please,” she said, trying to twist away from him.
“I’ll tell you when we’re done,” he said. “You need to start listening to me when I talk. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir! Yes, sir!” she sobbed out. “No more, I’m sorry!”
“Oh, you’re going to be sorry. I’m not near done yet. When I tell you to listen to me, or to do something, you will do it, do you understand me?” Repeatedly he slammed his hand down on her warm bottom. He could feel the heat start to rise and her twists and efforts to get away grow more and more frantic. She needed more.
Focusing on her cute little sit spot, he decided twenty more. At least. She’d remember this every time she sat down, and hopefully it would give her what she needed.
“Done! Done!” She screeched. “Oh, please! Okay, okay!”
Eric made sure the last five were the hardest ever and by the time he hit the end her words no longer made sense. That’s what he—what she—needed he knew.
He took his leg off hers, and instead of standing up and doing her adorable little after spank dance that he loved watching, grabbing her bottom and rubbing it, rising on her toes, stomping her feet trying to wiggle the fire out, she collapsed in front of him.
Laying her head on his knees, her hand didn’t even go to her bottom, she just sobbed.
“I couldn’t stop,” she hiccupped, barely coherent. “The deer ran in front of me. Liz left to call help and didn’t come back. Meredith was hurt. I didn’t know what to do. All I wanted was you.”
Trying to catch her breath, she kept trying to say something. Eric patted her shoulders and then pulled her up to his lap.
“Shh, baby, it’s okay now. I got you.”
“Meredith got hit the worst. She needs to be okay.”
“Doctor said she would be, baby. We’ll know soon.” He petted her more.
He rubbed her as she sobbed, repeating, “Liz is gone and Meredith is hurt and your car is wrecked and-and-and…” She sobbed, soaking his shirt.
Eric felt all but helpless. Everything she said was true, but none of it was her fault. “Shh. You’re okay. The other girls will be, too.” He hoped anyway. Maybe Liz would be in the waiting room, and Meredith would be out of surgery, when they came back out.
Right now, he had a wife to comfort and reassure and realized he felt just a little less stressed, despite all the ongoing fear of the unknown future his family faced. Now that she could talk about it, hoped to hell she did, too.
Holding her close, he knew he was going to love, spank and take care of her, forever.
Because that was her choice, forever and always.
