This book has been about the many missteps that accompanied a great adventure that began in 1492. Much of what followed was exemplary. But I, and any right-thinking human being, must also be, and will continue to be, ashamed of a great deal of it—which is why mass hysteria must always be countered with reason.
Today, that is happening less and less. Remember what I said at the start:
Guns. Donald Trump. Russophobia. The mass hysteria from the left bleeds one into the other, folding in additional insanity like “white privilege” and the myth of man-made climate change. Look at our history and remember that while there are those of us who learn the lessons of mass hysteria, there are others who will exploit those lessons.
When the left has removed all the statues of Columbus, all the Confederate flags, all the monuments to our Founding Fathers; when books like this have been burned and removed from libraries, when we have allowed hysterical cries to terminate or terrorize rational discourse, we will all have become Cotton Mather and Hassan-i Sabbah and those who erected testaments to their own infamy with the bones of others.
In one of his many exquisite plays on words, Benjamin Franklin said of Americans—just before he affixed his signature on the Declaration of Independence—“We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”
