‘Sure,’ Nicholas said, but he was too tied up in me to watch his brother and Stella leave.
‘Are you OK?’ I asked him as the front door closed, wondering how the sudden reappearance of his abusive father would have affected Nicholas. Please don’t let this make him regress back to how he used to be, I thought desperately; I wasn’t sure I was strong enough to pull us both through it all again.
Raising his face at my question, Nicholas looked at me, his eyes burning with love and protectiveness before he smiled at me far more brightly than I would ever have expected under the circumstances.
‘I am now I have you,’ he murmured, kissing me firmly on the lips to ensure I was still with him. ‘God, you were amazing, Rebecca. So strong.’
Kissing me again until my head was spinning, Nicholas left me with absolutely no doubt of his feelings for me, and I had to agree with him. Together we would be just fine.
