Slave Nicky, who Sue got on with quite well (rather more so than either of her daughters did), explained Charlie’s mindset to her mother.
“Getting to Level Three means a sea change in your head,” Nicky said. “The most important thing becomes pleasing the men, no matter what it takes. You become immersed in that and your satisfaction comes from doing it well. I know Level Three status gives you some extra privileges, but you don’t do it because of them, they just become a little pat on the back to show that your approach is appreciated. It also makes you feel more self-confident: you have the confidence to surrender to slavery completely, with nothing held back.”
“But could she become institutionalised?” asked Sue with concern, aware that the same question could be asked of Nicky herself and hoping she wasn’t offending the girl.
Nicky shook her head. “Nah,” she said. “She’ll need more help adjusting at the end of it, like I will, but she’ll be fine.”
Sue sighed and acquiesced. In any case, there wasn’t anything she could do about it: Charleen was an adult and able to make her own choices, even here. Of course, she also realised that, as Charleen would not be allowed to leave the estate, the only way to see her would be for Sue and Mandy to visit here and female visitors were only allowed as slaves. It looked as though they would not become as entirely free of this world as it had once appeared.
