  Milson Valley 5

  The Wizard’s Tizz

There is a divide in Milson Valley between creatures, one which threatens to destroy the strong Alliance that keeps the city and valley safe. Wizard Mason Armstrong knows he can stop the trouble before it truly begins, but he doesn’t want to. Not if it means he has to accept his wolf shifter mate, Enforcer Drax Charmers, who refused to claim Mason five years ago.

Drax Charmers is trying everything short of kidnapping to get his mate back. Unfortunately, wizards are renowned for holding grudges, and Mason isn’t letting this one go. As paranormal groups take sides and the Alliance is threatened, Mason must learn to accept his wolf once more.

But someone in the coven isn’t happy with Drax and Mason mending their mateship. Almost immediately, Drax’s car is blown up, and they discover there is a traitor in their midst—a traitor who doesn’t want either of them to live long enough to be found.

  Prelude

  Four years ago

Trudging through Milson Valley’s western forest, far from any city and suburb, from any pack, pride, or paranormal group, were wolf shifter Luka Charmers, tiger shifter Marco Sanchez, and wizard Laurie Armstrong. Friends since cubs, they had trekked the thick terrain often over the years to the cabin Luka’s family owned when wanting a little quiet time.

Which wasn’t often—pack was very tight, as was the local pride. Witches and wizards tended to hold themselves a little apart, but here in Milson Valley, there was a strong Alliance between the paranormal groups. Luka, Marco, and Laurie had been friends since the kindergarten sandpit where one dug their escape route, the other was lookout, and the last made the sand dance.

An odd mix possibly, but the last hundred years saw creatures around the world joining forces. Together they made strong alliances to fight the Renegades who wanted nothing more than to take over paranormals and humans alike and destroy anyone who stood in their way.

The wolf stopped, holding up a hand, head tilted to the side. His friends stopped immediately and went still. The feline sniffed, brows lifting, and he pointed. The three friends crouched low and moved silently. The wizard wasn’t stealthy like the shifters and used magic to cover his footfalls and any noise he made on the forest floor. They were close to the cabin, their destination. They sunk down below overgrown bushes and peeked through the foliage to the small clearing surrounding the old building.

Their mouths dropped open in shock.

There were two creatures just in front of the cabin. Not two creatures they would ever think of being here, and not together and alone. One was an Enforcer for the local wolf pack. He was said to be the most powerful wolf in all of the States. The creature was fierce and territorial, not taking crap from anyone, and never submitted. While he deferred to the Starters pack Alpha, it was only due to their long friendship and because the Alpha was the strongest wolf Alpha in charge of a pack.

The other creature was a wizard who was second in charge of the Armstrong witch and wizard coven here in the valley. Talented and strong, the wizard was known for the causes he relentlessly pursued and having a single-minded devotion to his coven. Though only fifty-five years old, young for paranormal kind, he had accomplished a lot and wasn’t much older than the three now gaping and staring in dumbfounded shock at the scene in front of them.

The pair weren’t arguing, as they sometimes did at Alliance meetings. They weren’t strategizing or investigating some incident or other. No, they were locked together in the hottest kiss any of the three spying had ever witnessed. They could practically feel the heat from where they hid.

And, damn, the big Enforcer must have been completely wrapped up in the wiza
rd, for he didn’t even scent or notice the three younger creatures so close.

Big hands were tilting the wizard’s head up as he devoured the creature’s lips while the wizard was running his hands over the wolf’s naked body. And what an amazing, big body it was, too! Six foot six, muscle on top of muscle that glistened under the faint light from sun streaming through the overhanging forest.

The wolf was renowned for his unaffectionate ways. He did give a hug occasionally to family, and his best friends he considered brothers, but it was extremely brief and more a hard slap on the back that dislocated ribs and back disks. This kiss and the way he held the wizard was gentle, like the wizard was the most precious, fragile thing in the world. It was a bit awkward to watch, though they couldn’t drag their eyes away. No way. This was…intimate, the kiss on a level far beyond what the three had ever seen or experienced. Well, for Luka, he had never kissed. Marco, he wanted that type of kiss, and Laurie, he hadn’t known a kiss like that could exist. The wolf nipped at the wizard’s lips, tenderly, playfully, cupping the back of the wizard’s head, streams of soft light brown and gold hair flowing through the wolf’s fingers. This wasn’t a quick hookup, a liaison. No, these two were lovers, had a deep and strong connection. Or was it even more? Could it be?

The wolf removed his hands and ran them slowly over the wizard, stroking, caressing. He took his time removing the creature’s dress shirt, the material floating to the ground at their feet. Then, they were further shocked when the wolf dropped down to his knees, his eyes fixed on the wizard, who gazed down at him and brushed thick, creamy blond hair off his lover’s face and smiled, his gorgeous face loving.

As though of one mind, they watched a little longer. There was a lot of caressing and touching as the wizard was stripped, and the wolf licked and lavished attention everywhere.

Then, they got out of there. Carefully, slowly, damn fast. That wasn’t a porn show, and though wolves and a lot of shifters didn’t give a toss who saw when in the heat of the moment, the pair at the cabin had something special going on that they shouldn’t be privy to.

Miles away, they managed to find their voices.

“Wow,” Marco, the tiger, whispered in awe. “Like…yeah, wow. Did either of you know?”

“Gods no!” Laurie shivered. “Ugh, and I just saw my cousin naked.”

“Yeah, I’m fine with that.” Marco chuffed. “You wizards may be small, but you’re well-formed and your cousin…holy fucking shit! He’s scorching hot.” Marco grinned at Luka. “So is your brother.”

Luka just smile. He was confused but not much fazed him. “And who knew he could be so affectionate? The most I’ve ever gotten from him is a shoulder tap. So…there’s something real deep going on there.”

“Hmm. I wonder why we never see them together, and I don’t just mean in that way.” Laurie flushed. “I know Drax visits the coven, a lot now that I think about it. But it’s always Council and Alliance business.”

“Huh, but we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. Or, we do now. Does Mason ever go out to pack lands?” Marco asked.

“Nope. Actually, he rarely sets foot out there. Some of his assistants have to drop things off and represent him, but no, not since he first moved here. He has been to the Mayor’s…has he been out to the Sanchez Compound?”

“Yeah, tons of times. He and Baron are real close. I always thought that was weird because Baron is the eldest of his litter of three, and they are over a hundred years old, same as Drax. I know Sebastian is in the same litter and best friends with Drax and Urian. And Trent is in Europe with his mate, but Baron and Mason are tight despite the big age difference.”

“Age doesn’t matter, and Mason is old beyond his years. He grew up on politics and dealing with creatures.” Laurie worried his bottom lip. “What does this mean? Paranormals do not form strong bonds to creatures who are not our mates. We have quick flings and maybe a semiserious relationship that both sides know will end and means next to nothing. They looked very serious.”

“Hey, don’t sweat it. They can handle themselves.” Luka laughed. “And each other.”

“I think they’re mates. I’ve seen my aunt and uncle together, Luka’s parents, and dozens of other mated creatures, and Drax and Mason; they just have this way about them.”

“Yeah? Hmm, except Drax would claim his mate straight away and Mason’s been living in the valley for two years,” Luka mused.

“And I would be able to tell if Mason merged with a mate.”

  “How?” Marco asked curiously.

“Well, I guess it’s similar in a way to shifters. Once you guys claim a mate, your scent changes, as does the mate’s, sort of like a mate’s scent on them. With us, merging with mates leaves a print of the other, not visual or anything; it’s a magical marker I guess. And Drax doesn’t have it.”

They were silent, and then Marco shook his big tiger head and smiled.

“I think we should make trips to the cabin more often, just to keep an eye on the old place.”

  “Yeah,” Luka agreed.

“Strangely enough, I agree with you.” Laurie was serious. “You two don’t understand. You guys go all feral over mates if something happens. Witches and wizards get a bit…let’s just say they get into a bit of a snit. You mix that with the Armstrong chill factor and things could get strained.”

“What are you saying, Laurie?” Luka asked.

“Well, nothing stands in the way of Mason and his work and what he believes in. I’ve known Drax since I was a baby, and he’s the same. Those two could clash if they have a lover’s tiff and bring the entire Alliance here in Milson Valley to a standstill.”

Marco laughed. “You’re such a worrier.”

Laurie slowly shook his head, frowning. “I’m a realist. If those two fall out, the result could divide the entire valley, which means not only do we lose the Alliance but, also pack, pride, coven, and whatever else will take sides.”

Luka rubbed his chin, hazel eyes staring off. “Then let’s keep an eye on them.”

  Chapter One

  “Not now, Mason.”

“I’m not your booty call, Drax. You can’t just turn up, click your fingers, and then scrub my scent off.”

Drax Charmers, local wolf pack Enforcer, snarled at Mason, aggression holding his body tense, his hands clenched.

Standing by the front doors of the Armstrong witch and wizard coven, Lord Mason Armstrong was far from intimidated by the lethal wolf pack Enforcer. After all, Mason was a powerful wizard who, with a muttered word or a wave of his hand, could shoot a lightning bolt at the arrogant, snarling creature in front of him. “I have to get to work. We’ll talk later.”

“Forget it, I’m done talking.” Mason waved a hand dismissively. “Go, and don’t come back expecting anything. I won’t be available to you unless it relates to business.”

  “You wouldn’t dare.”

“Oh, but I would, and have. My assistants have been informed—”

Mason was cut off by Drax’s deep, angry snarl.

“Be careful, very careful. I have no patience left.”

“Didn’t your parents ever teach you not to tease a wizard?” Mason smirked, shoving Drax away from him. “I no longer acknowledge you, Drax Charmers, Enforcer to the Starters pack.”

Magic snapped the air around them, the spell cast. Mason strode back into the vast coven mansion led by his grandmother, Lady Delia Armstrong, ignoring a few witches and wizards who may or may not have seen his argument with Drax. He no longer felt, no longer cared, and was beyond keeping secrets. Now his only concern was his coven, family, friends, and those who might need assistance, especially against the Renegades, who would like nothing more than to take out other creatures for greed and power.

All of these were far more important than his squabbles with a wolf shifter. Especially ensuring the wellbeing of this coven and the members in it, and the preservation of Milson Valley. “Mason.”

  Mason acknowledged his
older cousin Xavier, a talented and influential vampire who, as Delia’s grandson also, was a valued member of the coven. Even though Xavier wasn’t a wizard and had none of their magic, he had special talents all of his own.

“That was a powerful spell you cast,” Xavier murmured quietly. “Are you certain you wish to do that?”

Mason was certain and said so. He was adamant. While Xavier may advise caution, Mason had long since lost his when it came to dealing with his now ex-lover, Drax. He had been patient, understanding, and sacrificing over the years. Now, he wanted the wolf out of his life completely and the best way to do so was to cast a spell, which stipulated Mason would no longer acknowledge Drax.

Xavier was the only one he had confided in the last five years. At first, it was because they were cousins and close, but when Xavier moved to Milson City fifteen months ago, they had formed a solid family bond. Mason could trust Xavier with his life, and vice versa. He stepped into his office, Xavier following and closing the door.

“Drax is a formidable ally and enemy. He will have his entire pack and those from the Sanchez pride as support.”

“Yes, I have only been here five years, but I have a few alliances within the Sanchez pride, you for one, Baron another, and a few more. Plus an entire coven. It will not become an issue, Xavier. Drax has not even claimed me.”

“No, and that was foolish of him. You have evaded being claimed the last few years since he dealt with the problem that held him back in the beginning, and now to dismiss him, your mate, is not wise.”
