Once a Lawman Page 24

by Raine Cantrell

“I’m told I have a moderately fair voice. Belinda, querida, how could you think I didn’t want you?”

He drew her hand down between them, holding her gaze with his. “Feel what you do to me, love. I ache with the need I have for you, and only you. But I wanted you to know me and not be caught by newfound passion. I had to give you time, time I stole that day—”

“You gave me the most incredible pleasure I have ever known, Conner Kincaid. Pleasure I found only in your arms.” The last was a bare whisper of sound, for she gave in to the hunger for his kiss.

Conner indulged her. Soundly. Hotly. With all the love that flowed from his heart to hers. And when desire threatened any rational thought, he broke the kiss.

“How long will it take you to plan a wedding?” he asked, nibbling her ear.

  “Properly, at least eight months.”

  “Too long. Try three.”

  “Six.”

  “Two. Accommodate me, love.”

  “Compromise, Conner. Three.”

“One and that’s my final offer. Expectant brides can’t dance all night.”

“But I,” she replied, with a merry twinkle glowing in her eyes, “am not an expectant bride.”

Conner scooped her up into his arms. “Are you open to bribery?”

“Conner Kincaid, I am shocked. You are the sheriff, remember? You cannot take bribes. You certainly cannot offer any.”

  “Wanna bet?”

Her eyes gleamed with assurance. Her smile curved on the wicked side. “What are you offering?”

“Temptation. A man. Just a man who loves you.”

“Definitely tempted.” She kissed him, long and slowly, playing a game of tease and conquer with her tongue. When she opened her eyes to see the sensual heat from his gaze, she nestled her head on his shoulder. “Definitely a man. Definitely loved. Honorable and wise. The perfect man to wear a lawman’s badge. The perfect choice for a husband. Lawman, we have a wedding to plan.”

“I like a woman who knows her own mind.”

“And it is filled with nothing but thoughts of loving you, Conner Kincaid.”
