He said the EKG was normal, no heart concerns and no arrhythmia. He told us they couldn’t definitively say dehydration or blood sugar or even low blood pressure weren’t the problems because by the time they ran the blood test, I had been on the IV and that could have stabilized my blood sugar. And my blood pressure was normal both in the ambulance and in the hospital.
“Have you felt the lightheadedness or dizziness before today?”
“Yes, a few times, at work and at home. I just figured it was because of not eating right, not sleeping enough, and maybe not drinking enough water.”
Jeff and I looked at each other. He had a disapproving frown on his face. Then I glanced over at Sky. The doctor began reading down the list of things that he had been able to eliminate -- no to mono, that was a good thing. There were no indications of anemia. “Although it’s possible stress and anxiety could have played a part in the fainting spell, and lack of sleep is always a problem, if it persists. But I believe the reason was more likely a classic case of compression of the inferior vena cava leading to postural hypotension.”
“What exactly does that mean?” Jeff asked.
“It’s common with people who carry extra weight, that’s not your situation though.” He laughed to himself as if he were a standup comedian. “It’s also common amongst expectant women. Congratulations, Nikki, you’re pregnant.”
I dropped my head, and Jeff dropped my hand. Oh my god! Fuck! Exactly what I wasn’t expecting and what Jeff didn’t want.
“Wow…, just, fucking, wow,” Sky said as he stood there shaking his head.
“This doesn’t go any farther than this room.” Jeff glared at Sky. “You got it? We’ll make the announcement after the wedding, but no one knows about this before.”
“Shit,” I said in disbelief.
“This isn’t the usual response we see,” the doctor interrupted.
“I can’t fucking believe this!” Jeff practically screamed.
“Rebekka’s on her way here; what are you going to tell her? What’s the brilliant excuse why Nik’s in the hospital?”
“Shut the fuck up, Sky,” Jeff snapped back at him.
“Jeff, I’m sorry. I swear I didn’t do it on purpose.” Tears were streaming down my face. “Jeff, look at me, please. I’m begging you.”
He walked over to the large window facing God knows what. He ran his hands down his face. “Fuck my goddamn life.”
