Conrad shrugged his shoulders. “Who knows?” He looked at Amanda. “She probably knows.”
“We won’t ever see them again,” Amanda promised Sarah. “Now,” she said in a delighted voice, “what about tonight, Los Angeles? Are we still on for chocolate and a movie?”
“You bet,” Sarah smiled. “I can’t think of anything better. Conrad, you want to join us?”
“Nah,” Conrad said, “I have some paperwork to finish up. You ladies go on ahead.” He tapped a few keys on his computer and then frowned as he looked up to catch Sarah’s eye.
Sarah stared into Conrad’s eyes. “What’s the matter?”
“Charlie Raymond’s information has been erased from every single database... it’s like the man never even existed. We can’t charge Bradley because he’s been deported back to the United Kingdom. We managed to stop a horrible terrorist attack, but... but Charlie Raymond didn’t get the justice he deserved.”
Sarah stood up and walked around the desk. “Conrad,” she said, putting her hand on his shoulder, “I still think Charlie Raymond would be very proud of the justice that was served. We sent his killers to prison and captured a dangerous rogue agent.”
“That’s right,” Amanda agreed. “Now, get up and come with us. We’re going to eat chocolate, get fat, and watch a silly romantic comedy and cry some.”
“I don’t cry,” Conrad said sternly.
Amanda nodded her head, stood up, walked to Conrad, grabbed his left ear, and yanked him up with a good-natured grin. “You will tonight,” she said and pulled Conrad out of his office.
Sarah remained behind for a minute. She closed her eyes and saw the body of Charlie Raymond lying in the snow. “We did our best, sir,” she said in a low voice. “I hope our best was enough for you.”
“You coming, Los Angeles?” Amanda yelled from the hallway.
“I’m coming,” Sarah called. She opened her eyes and looked out the office window. Outside a gentle snow was falling, and far away, Diamond Lake was still frozen and sleeping peacefully. Another storm had come and passed, and Snow Falls was at rest once again. “I’m coming.”
As Sarah walked out of Conrad’s office and closed the door, the phone on the desk rang. In New York, a scared man was standing at a rainy phone booth. “Come on, old friend, pick up,” the man begged. “Pick up...” Then gun shots rang out, and all that could be heard was the sound of falling rain.
