  The Protectors

  Book 1

  L. Ann Marie

Contemplating ending the constant barrage of death and destruction that he's seen his whole life brings Christian closer to his family. With Dakota's help, he learns and uses his ancestors to control and manage his visions and abilities. Gaining peace for the first time in his life still leaves him lonely. With all he's been gifted, the ability to be touched is not among them.

Dean thought using her ability to help the police find a killer was a good thing, until she realized she was now the hunted. Losing her parents, in an explosion meant for her, she finds her way to the Princes and a man that not only protects and understands her, but can hold her too.

Christian has his work cut out for him. Showing Dean, the Princes and the MC what all in means isn't easy when it's wrapped around the 'freaky kid' abilities and a crazy MC.

This is the story of Christian and Dean.

  Ch apter One

I ride through the Rhode Island reservation’s gate fast with Cade following. Throwing chin to Peto I wonder why he’s at the gate. They have Security here so a stable hand opening the gate is odd. Aiyana sounded frantic, which isn’t a normal emotion to hear in her voice—she’s always so even keeled. This isn’t sitting well with me. I go right to Co’s house and shut my bike off. “I’ll be a while. Security is tight here if you want to take a ride around I’ll call when I’m done.”

He gives me a look. “I was told not to let you out of my sight.”

I roll my eyes. “I’m dressed and you can’t come into the Shaman’s teepee.”

He nods. “I’ll wait outside. Brantley’s telling me not to leave your side, but I get the ritual thing. I’ll wait out here.”

“What’s going on with their Security?” Co shields here, but not when he’s in the teepee. This is weird.

Cade is usually pretty good at answering me. He flips his mic off. “They pulled people for a protest and Jeremy called Prez telling him shit is happening and they need help. He’s sending a team, but I’m staying at your side, or really outside the teepee. I’m not trying to make this hard on you Brother, just following orders. Jessie would kick my ass if something happened to you.”

I want to roll my eyes at him again, but end up just throwing him chin and walk away. I don’t bother with the house and walk right around to the teepee in the back. “Co, it’s Christian, may I enter?” I ask in Mohegan.

Aiyana is here, I feel her, she’s upset and everything is going through her head. Co opens the flap and I walk in greeting him with thanks and appreciation for his and the ancestors time. “It is I that give thanks to you. Aiyana will not settle to get guidance from the ancestors.”

I look at her. She’s got tears running down her face. “What do you need Aiyana?” I ask sitting beside her.

“We need help,” she says, sounding defeated.

“Give it to me Aiyana. Hand me your burden and I’ll bring it to Prez. Together we can get through everything.” I’m frustrated with my words. Mohegan doesn’t give me the ‘feeling’ words that I want to get through to her.

“This is not a Club problem. It’s more vast. A blanket threat on anything that is not understood.”

That sounds like a Club problem to me. Fuck. I squeeze her hand for a second and see everything she does. Clenching my jaw, I watch with my heart in my throat. Fuck! When her nightmare ends, I watch her eyes. “We will get through this. I’ll talk to Prez and Dakota as soon as I get back. Let’s jump and get you some peace.”

Co sits beside us as we go. “We can’t fight the hatred Christian.”

I look at her and smile. “Oh, but we can. We’ve been doing it all our lives. With Dakota and Prez we have the planning and ability to do anything. Do not underestimate that foresight and commitment to keep our mission going.”

She looks hopeful. “You’ve grown so much since you’ve been back. I need that confidence you have in our tribe.”

It’s been a little more than two years since I moved from the reservation. In that two years, I’ve trained with Prez, Dakota and Jeremy to build shields and enhance the abilities I have. With that understanding and training I’ve gained confidence. My mom used to always say, ‘knowledge is power.’ She was right. “I am no longer a child Aiyana. At twenty-eight, we need to be closer to who we are meant to be, there is no more time for finding ourselves.”

She smiles, but it’s a sad smile. “We will need everything in us to fight this.”

“Then that’s what we’ll give. I have learned that in Brotherhood, just as in Warriors, together we can overcome anything. It is when we don’t work together that we fail.” She nods as we soar above the lake.

“Aiyana give your doubts to the ancestors. Our Warrior Protector speaks the truth. Our past, present and future lie in the hands of more than one. Take the peace and guidance they offer,” Co tells her.

We soar back and I watch the smile come back to her eyes. “It is good Aiyana. Your mind is at rest. We have a month to prepare. Come to Princes so you can get the training.” She shakes her head no. I sigh, “It is not crucial at this point, but there is a time you will need to shed the security of the reservation and grow into who you are meant to be. I will not put pressure where it is not needed.” She looks surprised and scared. I smile and pull her toward me kissing her head. “That is for another time my Warrior Princess. I must get back. Are you more at peace Aiyana?”

“I am my Warrior Protector. Thank you for guiding me to our wise spirits.”

I look at Co, he’s sitting here smiling at us, “Soon my council will no longer be needed.”

I laugh. “Never happening Co. We’ll always need our fathers.”

I thank him and our ancestors, then walk out. Keeping my head clear I start for my bike. Cade falls in beside me. “There are two away cars that seemed to have followed us here. Prez has the team in place, but we’re running red extract unless you want to wait for Dakota to clear Abel for a pickup.”

He sounds like that will make his day. “No. I need to get back now. Tell Prez and Dakota I’ll need some time when I’m back.”

“Fuck.” He repeats my words and doesn’t look happy. I don’t give him a second glance as I start my bike and point it toward the gate. Chevy is here to let us out. I throw him respect and a smile. He’s conflicted, but gives me a chin lift. He wants off the reservation, but feels he let his people down. I don’t envy him—the elders here are a tough crowd to answer to. On the ride back, I think about Prez and Dakota. They’ve trained me to defend with my abilities, but I’ve never had to use them to stay alive. I hope it’s like running pop ups and I can call on them when they’re needed.

‘Yes Christian,’ Jeremy says in my head.

I laugh. ‘Get the fuck out of my head Je.’

‘Be alert. Car tracking movements.’ I look at my hand and see the jammer around my wrist. ‘On visual,’ he explains. Thank fuck. ‘Now.’ He sounds nervous.

“Stay alert Cade, Jeremy says it’s happening now.” I pull my gun and hold it against my thigh.

“Roger Guardian.” We fly through the streets without one complaint from him. I smile thinking that I like when he’s alert and he’s not bitching at me about riding crazy. We’ve all been riding since we were kids. They call all the Blackhawks crazy, but we’re all here and still riding. “Next right! Jump and get to Security! Aaron is on the other side of the block. GO!” Cade yells then turns going around the other side of the car.

I need a fuckin’ ear piece. They talk in Ops so it comes over the helmets, but partners talk over the ear pieces. I didn’t catch where Cade’s orders are coming from. I speed up and jump the car waiting to turn flying over it and landing on the side of another turning car.

“Jump again Christian!” Prez yells in my helmet. I hear the crash behind me, but keep my focus on forward and jumping over to the side to blow by the standing traffic. Shots are being fir
ed from everywhere. “Jump!”

I twist the throttle and lift the bike over the car in front of me. “Got it Prez.”

“Fuckin’ Blackhawks! Christian you’re on with me and Prez. He’ll guide you around and get you here safe.” Billy sounds like he’s smiling.

This is good, I think, as a gun is pointed at me from an SUV coming my way. I see it in my mind, but also happening right in front of me. I hit the tires then raise the gun and hit the driver before his shot is off. In my head, I see him crash, but I keep moving forward and don’t take the time to look back. “Clear Prez.”

‘Yes,’ Jeremy says in my head.

“Good job Brother. Stay alert, Aaron was pulled away. Taylor is close.”

Fuck. I hate being the cause of him being pulled away just for a shuttle service. “I’m good Prez. It’s clear for me.”

“Roger Christian. Let me check something.” He’s going to ask Jeremy like I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing.

“Prez, he already said I’m clear,” I give him a monotone voice.

“Roger Guardian. I’m not used to Ops with you in the mix. No disrespect Brother,” Prez says and I’m stunned. He’s never done that before.

“Roger Prez.” I fly through the streets, jumping what is in my way and making Security in fifteen minutes. “I’m out Prez. Thanks for the eyes.”

I pull my helmet off and hand it to the Prospect that takes my bike. No one follows me in, but Hawk is waiting when I walk into Security. I bend and pet him, then follow him to Ops. I’m surprised when my thumb lets me in.

Prez is smiling while he’s talking to Taylor. “Not even a smile from him Sniper. You’ll need to step it up Brother. We’ve gotten fuckin’ bored with your action hogging feeds. We need laughs Brother. Recruit if you have to Ghost.”

“Never thought I would see the day when we would miss Ramsey my great Warrior Leader.” Dakota slaps him on the back as he’s walking toward me. “We need more than a minute Brother?”
