Believe Me

The translations of Baudelaire’s poems are my own. In many cases I’ve taken the liberty of omitting or condensing verses to make them fit the demands of a thriller. In no cases, though, have I substantially changed the meaning.
In my original afterword, I acknowledged the help of Professor Chao Tzee Cheng, Michael Ward, Clark Morgan, Anthea Willey, Mandy Wheeler, Ian Wylie, Sian Griffiths, Brian Innes, Sam North, and my agent, Caradoc King.
To those names I’d now like to add Kate Miciak, Denise Cronin, Kara Welsh, and the whole team at Penguin Random House, along with Millie Hoskins and Kat Aitkin at United Agents. And Caradoc King—for a second time.
My thanks, also, to Tina Sederholm and Dr. Emma Fergusson for invaluable advice on an early draft.
In the original, I gave the name Durban to the most decent, loyal, and steadfast man Claire encounters, and dedicated the book to my friend and colleague Michael Durban. Seventeen years later, for the same reasons, I dedicate it to him again.
