He received a business degree from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana and a law degree from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, in the 1970s.
He pursued a variety of careers that allowed him to travel the world and amass a rich appreciation for cultural differences. Along the way, John owned a company that imported sapphires, rubies, and other colored stones from Sri Lanka, to which he traveled often. He also ran the health spa division for the Walt Disney Company in Orlando, a job that introduced him to people from around the world and all walks of life.
He settled in the South to pursue his writing career while enjoying the warmth of the Southern living.
