Love in the Mix Page 10

by Lucy Darling

“Doesn’t what get old?” I turn, planting my feet on the ground and motioning for her to come to me. She lets her robe drop again, her smile growing bigger with each step that draws her closer. I had no idea she could get more beautiful but over the years she has.

I’ll catch her fingers trailing the stretch marks on her stomach sometimes as she looks into the mirror. I love each and every one of them and what they meant for us. The changes in her body only remind me of the time we’ve been together. The journey, the years and the memories we’ve made together. I love them all.

“You watching me get ready for bed.” She rests her hands on my shoulder as I brush my mouth against her stomach.

“I think you’re well aware I never grow tired of watching you.”

“Pretty sure that’s why you’re retired already. Full time Alyssa watcher,” she teases me. I shrug, not giving a shit. I worked hard when I was younger and now I get to do what I want in life. My wife.

“Damn straight.” My fingers grab her hips as I flip her down onto the bed. “Something bothering you?” I could see her mind drift off throughout the night. I kept wondering what she was thinking about. Her hands come to my chest. Her eyes flick down to them.

“He’s going to ask for the ring.” She stares at her wedding ring. Some people think Alyssa and I moved too fast. I’d had her pregnant when she said ‘I do.’ We didn't know it at the time but I’d had a feeling. I think we did it right. We might have been on the young side when we had our son, but our children would know their grandparents and their children will even know their great grandparents.

“You told him long ago his wife would wear it one day.” Her eyes fill with tears.

“Don’t cry.” I lean down, kissing her softly.

“They are happy tears.” She smiles at me like I don’t know that. I know every inch of this woman. “It will just be weird to not see it on my finger, but at the same time I’m so happy that this marriage will forever tie Neily’s and our family together. This ring. I swear it has superpowers.”

“It's not the ring, cupcake.” I take her hand in mine, kissing the ring as she’s done so many times before. “It’s the family. The love. The loyalty. The devotion.” I could go on for days. It was everyone that came together to make this life together. She nods in agreement. She is and always will be the center of it all. I don’t think she even gets sometimes that she’s the sweet spot of it all. Everyone migrates back to her. The sweetness she exudes is contagious.

“I love you.” She wraps her hand around my neck, pulling me down to kiss her. I feel the cool band of her wedding ring against my skin. If she thinks I’ll let that finger be bare for long, she has another thing coming.

“I love you, too, cupcake.” I kiss my wife. The mother of my children. The woman who showed me I wasn't living life until I found her. She is the sweetest thing in the whole damn world. I’d spend the rest of my life at her side

Life is one big recipe that we’re always adding to or subtracting from to make it the best it can be for all of us. Alyssa had been the ingredient missing from mine all those years ago. It only took her throwing her love in the mix to complete me.
