Connor looked dazed, but very happy.
“Well, I dare say getting out of the Citadel is not going to be nearly as difficult as getting in. We need to travel south to the other courts to take council with the remaining Seelie Kings and Queens. I only hope we get a better reception there than we did here.” He was laughing as he said it, but Lily had the horrible feeling that his words might have been a bit truer than either of them would have liked.
“What’s gonna happen ter Elidor and Adeline?” Nob asked.
“Nothing,” Lily said, “apart from Adeline needing some serious dental work. They know what they need to know. All they need to do is to keep Ahriman’s army out until we can finish our mission.”
“I just hope they don’t attack again before she regains consciousness,” Connor said. He was right, of course. If there was another assault on the top of the mountain, the enemy could overrun the place before Adeline woke up.
“We just better hope they don’t then, hadn’t we?”
Connor turned to Nob.
“Nob, we’d like you and Cumudgeon to come with us. You’re our friends and you’ve proved your loyalty, your courage and your resourcefulness,” he said. “Would you do us the honour of being our companions on this trip?”
“It would be a ’onour and a priv’lege, Me Lord,” Nob said, giving a little bow.
“Me too,” Cumudgeon said, giving a terrifying grin. “As long as I can bring me knittin’.”
“The rest of the hobs will stay here where it’s safe for now,” Nob said. “There aint nowhere else fer them ter go.”
Connor looked down at his hands.
“Is my power really back?” he asked. Lily simply nodded. He took Lily in his arms and gave her a sweet kiss on the lips. “See I told you that you had all the power you ever needed, if only you believed in yourself a bit more. You saved us. I was arrogant enough to believe that I could take on the world, but you have shown me what a bloody fool I’ve been.”
“Well, it looks as if we’re back in business, and it wasn’t you being arrogant, it was my lack of faith that caused the problem.” She paused, and frowned. “So what do we do now, then?”
“We travel south.”
Lily gave a bright smile.
“And get warm,” she said.
Connor laughed, and slipping his arm around her waist, they headed back to the inn.
If you want to follow Lily and Connor’s story, book three of the Faerie series will be available early spring 2016.
