2011
Directs Warner Bros. thriller Contagion. Announces he will retire from feature filmmaking. In the fall, Soderbergh begins production on the male stripper drama Magic Mike, which he financed, along with actor Channing Tatum, without a studio on board. Begins planning his next and last film for Warner Bros., an adaptation of the TV property The Man from U.N.C.L.E., but the project is stalled after George Clooney bows out. Also signs on as executive producer of the documentary Roman Polanski: Odd Man Out. Directs a short documentary An Amazing Time: A Conversation About End of the Road for DVD release of the 1969 feature film.
2012
Haywire is released in January, faltering at the box-office. In April, finally directs Side Effects (a.k.a. Bitter Pill or The Bitter Pill) after several financing stops and starts. In June, Magic Mike opens in theaters, earning far better ticket sales than expected ($39 million). The development of a Broadway musical adaptation of the hit film is also announced. Later that summer, directs the HBO movie Behind the Candelabra, a love story about Liberace and his younger live-in lover.
2013
In April, delivers keynote “State of Cinema” address at the 56th San Francisco International Film Festival. In May, Behind the Candelabra is watched by 2.4 million viewers during its premiere HBO broadcast, more than any other HBO original movie. Begins pre-production on Cinemax TV miniseries The Knick, a New York set period hospital drama to star Clive Owen. Also signs on to present Godfrey Reggio’s documentary Visitors.
