The other wolves from the Lander Clan sang in chorus, their howls rich and lyrical. As they sang they began to taper off until there was an anxious silence. Snow worried her bottom lip and pinched her eyes closed. They popped open when a youthful howl broke the silence of the night. Elena felt her wolf’s need to sing and she raised her muzzle up and let free the words of her heart.
“I am Elena Fallon! I sing with my Mom and Uncle Remus. I will be a good girl and learn a lot. I want to be a big and strong wolf like my Mom. I will protect my friend. My fangs are sharp, my claws dig deep, my eyes see the unseen, and my strength will lift those I love up. I sing my first song loud and clear.”
As Elena’s song ended the mysterious energy that had filled her seemed to slip away and the moon was at its peak. Cait nuzzled her cheek and she licked her Mom’s nose in response. Cait transformed back and pulled out the clothes from the backpack another werewolf had offered them. Cait helped Elena get dressed and bent down to plant a kiss on her forehead. “You did great, baby. We’re both proud.”
Elena grinned as Cait took her hand and led her over to where her mama was waiting for them. Snow stood, as Cait and Elena walked over to where she and Gwen were sitting, and she scooped her giggling daughter up into her arms.
“Mama!”
“You did amazing, baby!”
“I know.”
Snow laughed and set the little girl back down. She smiled as Cait pulled her into a hug and soft music began playing in the background as the other wolves pulled out stuff to start the midnight barbecue. Cait kissed the top of her head as Elena and Gwen skipped off to annoy Remus. Elena looked up at Gwen and noticed that the omega seemed to be in deep thought. Deciding that she would leave the older werewolf alone, Elena skipped off to where Remus was cooking at the grill and tugged on his pants leg.
“Uncle Remus! What’s wrong with Aunty?”
“Huh?” he asked as he flipped a burger.
“Is Aunty Gwen okay?” she asked again when he didn’t immediately answer. Remus shrugged and said, “Girl problems.”
“Oh. What is that?”
“When someone you like may or may not like you back.”
“Oh, I guess I have girl problems too!” Elena said as she ran to play with the other werewolves who had just pulled out a football to pass around. Remus watched the little werewolf run off and could only shake his head. Somehow, he had always figured she was going to be a handful. “Like mothers like daughter, I’d say,” he mumbled and flipped another burger.
