  Nick

“Nick! Nick! You gotta see this man, their trying to do a freaking cheer pyramid in the pool.” My buddy, Buddy, came cracking up and tripping all over the place from the outside deck.

He was beyond wasted and whenever he was, even a leaf blowing in the wind was hilarious to him, though a cheer pyramid in the pool did sound interesting. I had stopped by his place on the way across country from California, I was headed to Miami and Buddy had a permanent residence in Austin, Texas. Of course when he heard I was blowing into town he sponsored a blowout party at his place.

“Come on man, you gotta watch them try to pull this off, it’s hilarious,” he said, still chocking on laughter.

I studied his beet red face and the way he was clutching his stomach and just laughed at the sight of him. Man, Buddy was hard not to like; he was just…such an idiot. But in a good way. of course. I hefted up off of the couch and followed him out onto the deck; the night air was nice and breezy and the vibe of the party was cool. People were just hanging out and having a good time, no fights or anything had broken out yet.

“This isn’t gonna end well, man,” I said once I saw the few guys in the pool with a couple of girls on their shoulders and the third girl trying to climb onto the top tier from the edge of the pool.

“I know, right!” Buddy cracked up and his laugh was so damn infectious I started to laugh, too, or maybe that was because the blunt I had just finished was finally kicking in.

Sure enough, everything took on a helium like haze and I couldn’t stop laughing at Buddy who was now crying. Everyone around us was catching onto the laughter until the whole deck was laughing at the spectacle that was Buddy. Laughing for no other reason than just to laugh. This was what I lived for, just to be free and yeah…laugh with strangers. I turned my attention back to the pool down below and wiped the tears from my eyes. The final girl just couldn’t get to the top of the pyramid and some jerk next to her just pushed her into the pool, effectively knocking over the pyramid and dunking everybody. Everyone who was paying attention to the pool and or Buddy cracked up all over again when the pyramid excursion failed.

“Hey, hey, man take a deep breath before you die,” I told Buddy. By that time, he was lying on the deck flat on his back and wiping tears from his face.

“You’re right, I need some water…” he said and I helped him up. Buddy knew how to have a good time, but he also knew not to overdo it. Which was something I never picked up from him, unfortunately. When we squeezed our way to his fancy super updated kitchen, he went for a bottle of water and I grabbed a Guinness.

“Hey man, aren’t you getting’ back on the road tomorrow morning?” he asked and lazily my eyes swam over to the neon green time on the stove.

It was already tomorrow, damn near five a.m. and the party was still packed. Buddy was a financial consultant and a damn good one, which meant he was highly paid and traveled often. When I first set out, away from my parents, I followed Buddy around out of college and discovering new places and people became like an addiction. Soon my funds got cut off by mommy and daddy dearest so my hopping around slowed down. I’d work a little at any bar or restaurant and build up some funds to move on to the next adventure. It was a good life.

“Yeah, I’ll be good don’t worry,” I assured Buddy. He was definitely the more responsible one, even when red faced drunk.

“Oh hey, I forgot, a couple of my friends wanted to meet you, I always talk about my crazy best bud Nick and show pictures of you like I’m a proud father. You have some admirers here in Austin, you're welcome very much,” he spoke all on one breath and I stared at him for about three minutes before cracking up.

“Dude, what?” I asked and he rolled his eyes.

“Girls! This way,” he said and led me away from the kitchen, I grinned and let him lead me to said ‘girls’.

“Hey, remember when we were at that party in Vail?” Buddy asked me and my addled brain tried to push back to the memory. It was all a haze blanketed in white snow. “When you jumped off the deck at that cabin we rented and into about five feet of snow?” he asked and just the visual of what he was saying made me laugh though the memory was gone with the wind…or gone with the snow.

“I don’t remember,” I told him and he laughed.

“You were completely naked apart from a pair of socks and you just…dove,” Buddy reminisced and the visual only got better, making me laugh even longer.

“Dude, we have to start taping these things, I hardly remember the good stuff,” I said, my tongue feeling heavy and lazy thanks to my high.

“Hey, Rena, Jess!” Buddy called two blondes who perched by the staircase that led up from the downstairs family room. The room was packed with people who were playing video games or cheering on those playing the video games. I squinted at the TV and recognized Mario Kart, classic party game.

“Oh my gosh, hi, you must be Nick. Buddy’s told us a lot about you,” Rena said, one of the two blondes who could have been identical; they were all bombshell and perky features with similar pale blue eyes. I glanced at Buddy and quirked an eyebrow at him and he shrugged.

“What can I say, you’re my wingman even when you aren’t in town.”
I cracked up and the girls laughed too, but in the staple fake way that meant they were just after fitting in and getting attention. My kind of girls: when at a party like this, I’d give all the attention needed. My lips spread into a silly sort of grin at the direction of my thoughts and I tried to wipe it so I wouldn’t seem like an intoxicated idiot.

“I can’t blame the game, can’t blame the game,” I told Buddy and he slid his arm around Jess’s waist and asked if we wanted to go play Foosball out on the deck.

I was down for anything, though when we got to the deck, what really made a party a party was finally taking place. An all out brawl between two burly dudes was happening down near the pool, on the small bit of grassy lawn. People were drunkenly egging them on and Buddy cursed.

“Hold up a sec, I gotta handle this, Nick can you help?” he asked me and I glanced at Rena who gave me a little pout and I winked at her.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be back,” I said then Buddy and I puffed up our chests and headed down to break up the fight. My adrenaline spiked when I hopped in between the two fighters and narrowly ducked a slug to the face.

“Whoa!” I exclaimed and laughed a little as I tackled the guy around the midsection and sent him hard to the ground. “Hey man, you gotta calm down, deep breaths,” I told him, even to my own ears I sounded like a high idiot. Something I was trying hard not to do.

“Get off me, it’s between me and that jackass!” the guy huffed and I spared a glance at Buddy who was shoving the other guy out of sight.

Once they were gone, I got off of fighter number one and brushed off my clothes.

“It’s been a pleasure, my name is Nick Price and you can catch me at any party in the continental U.S.” I grinned at the guy and he simply looked at me as if I was stupid and then stalked off. I guessed it was time for that water, so I slowly made my way to the kitchen. Sure, I got lost a few times, but eventually I got there and scored a bottle of water.

“Hey, Nick!” Buddy came fast walking at me and looked as if I ditched him or something. “Did you forget about the girl I hooked you up with? If Rena isn’t having fun then Jess isn’t and I need for Jess to have fun,” he said and I chuckled then clapped him on the shoulder in reassurance.

“Sorry man, I had to regroup a little,” I held up the bottle of water and Buddy looked a little relieved.

“Good thing, I was hoping I wouldn’t have to scrape you off of the roof or something,” he said and then led me to where Rena and Jess were still waiting by the Foosball table.

Buddy and I called for next game and I got to focus on Rena; thankfully, her face was less of a blur and I was able to tell that she had a really…big nose. Out of everything else she had done on her body, she hadn’t gotten around to the nose.

“I saw you tackle that guy down there, you’re stronger than you look,” she said in a forced husky voice that just sounded all nasal to me, especially when my eyes were trained on her nose.

Of all things, she had huge boobs and nice eyes and I couldn’t pull it together for one small flaw. Maybe I was still too high and was seeing things with a fishbowl effect…then I noticed she was looking at me expectantly, her smile slipping a little.

“Uh, yeah…yeah that guy was big. It’s all about core power though,” I drawled and she giggled.

“So I bet you have really great abs,” she purred and her hand fell against my chest and slid down to my stomach. I was only wearing a thin t-shirt so I was sure she could feel the definition. “While we wait for these guys to finish their game why don’t we slip into the hot tub?” she asked me.

She was definitely feeling me, her eyelids were all low and she kept licking her lips. But god…that nose. I made some vague comment and turned my head to search out Buddy. This was not cool.

“Excuse me a sec, I’ll be right back,” I said and she seemed disappointed, but said she’d stay put.

I went over to Buddy who was practically embedded in Jess’s mouth by the balcony railing. I tapped him on the shoulder incessantly until he looked at me with murder in his eyes.

“What?” he asked in annoyance and I apologized to Jess and pulled him away.

“Why’d you have to give me big nose?” I asked and he rolled his eyes.

“What are you talking about?” he asked and I discreetly pointed my head in Rena’s direction. He looked at her and then looked at me, then looked at her again.

“Dude, you’re freaking high! Her nose is fine, in case you haven’t noticed, she and Jess are twins!” he said and I looked over at Rena and realized that from a distance her nose appeared normally proportioned to her body.

“Oh…I guess I am high,” I said and Buddy groaned.

“Just go crash somewhere man,” he said and I nodded my head in a bobbing motion.

“Yeah, I’ll do that,” I said and then Buddy disappeared back to Jess. I wondered if I should say anything to Rena and figured if I ever came back into town, I wouldn’t want her having a bad impression. So I sauntered over to her again.

“Change your mind about the hot tub?” she asked and I shook my head.

“You know what, actually I’m feeling kind of light headed, I think it’s best that I…” then I realized what I was saying. That wasn’t me, I didn’t pass up on a girl for some ridiculous optical side effect. Forget that, I’d spend some time with Rena and then crash.

“If the party is too loud for you we can always go somewhere quieter,” she said and I nodded.

“Yeah, that’s just what I had in mind,” I said. My eyes lazily ran the length of her body and back and she laced her fingers with mine. I led her upstairs to my designated bedroom and spent the rest of the night close and personal with Rena.

  * * *

Even before I opened my eyes the next morning, I was already bearing the repercussions of my choices the night before. My head felt like it was on the other end of a jackhammer and all that pounding made me nauseous…and that was before sitting up. I slowly opened my eyes and remembered I had a Rena in my bed. She was stretched out wearing nothing but a blanket over her hips and still asleep. I wasn’t an asshole so I wasn’t just gonna kick her out of bed; instead I got up gingerly, if only for my own sake, and made my way to the bathroom.

I did my morning hangover routine and glanced at the little clock next to the vanity to make sure it was even morning, just a few minutes left until afternoon. After a shower and such, my reflection looked a little better. Yeah, my eyes were red and tight from the headache, but I wasn’t as pale or gaunt looking. I didn’t bother with my hair, the dirty blonde curls usually did their own thing; I’d grown it out to my shoulders, so apart from some moisturizer I never had to do much to it.

I quietly stepped out into the bedroom, a towel wrapped around my waist, and found my duffel bag under the bed. I quickly dressed in some shorts and a tank top and found my Toms to slip on. Yeah, I looked like I spent the last two months in California, but whatever. I made sure to check for my valuables though, because you never knew with random girls, even if Buddy knew them.

When I emerged from the bedroom I smelled breakfast and the good kind, sticky buns and bacon, which was all I needed. Already I felt my hangover headache receding. Oddly enough Buddy was a great cook and when I stepped into the kitchen Jess was perched up at the breakfast bar munching on a huge sticky bun and Buddy was whisking up some eggs.

“Hey man, how you feel?” he asked me and I always wondered how he managed to bounce back from partying so hard, so quickly. Then again, he was always a morning person.

“Not as back to normal as you, I bet. But good enough, what’s cookin’?” I asked him and he gestured to a cooling baking sheet with more sticky buns on them. I walked over to the stove and gave him a loud kiss on the cheek, which got me playfully shoved away.

“Dude, no time for games when there’s an open flame,” he said and gestured to the stove. I cracked up and grabbed a bun for myself.

“Buddy, you’re so corny,” Jess commented and he fla
shed her a playful grin.

“You love it, though,” he said confidently and she giggled.

One thing I was grateful for was the fact that I never had to flirt with girls. Once I gave them my full attention and they were aware of it, they did all the work. Not saying that Buddy wasn’t a handsome guy; he was tall like me, about six four, and he had a lean muscular build. He had that superman look, too, all charming blue eyes and wavy black hair. But sometimes he was shy and girls picked up on that kind of thing.

“Good lord, man, this is awesome,” I commented on the warm, sweet, and delicious bun I was eating and Buddy smirked at me.

“Don’t talk with your mouth open, it’s unattractive,” he said and I snorted while I snooped around for the bacon I smelled. I realized he must have stashed it in the oven and worked around him to get at it, much to his annoyance.

“You guys act like you’re brothers or something,” Jess commented and I grinned at her.

“We are, we’ve been joined at the fist since high school,” I said and Jess laughed.

“Joined at the fist?” she asked and Buddy nodded.

“Yeah, Nick and I rationalized that it was weird for two guys to be joined at the hip, not to mention difficult when trying to…you know…” he smirked at Jess who blushed a little bit, “but as much as it makes us losers, Nick and I fist bump a lot, so we decided - joined at the fist.”

“Well, now that you’ve explained that it makes so much sense,” she said.

I finally got around to finding myself a plate and about an hour later Rena came downstairs looking a little worse for wear. But seeing both Rena and Jess together while sober in broad daylight, I realized that they were in fact identical twins. After they had their breakfast, they made a breezy exit then it was just Buddy and I.

“So are you gonna hire a cleaning service for this mess?” I asked him and he laughed.
