Niven was a supporting player in Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife in 1938, escorting Claudette Colbert on a European beach built in a Hollywood studio.
   Niv
en finally got a good leading role in a major movie, opposite his dubious friend Errol Flynn in The Dawn Patrol in 1938.
Niven co-starred with his sometimes girlfriend Loretta Young in Eternally Yours in 1939.
A rare still of David Niven during service in World War Two.
Niv’s happiest days, being married to his wife Primmie and carrying aloft his first son, David Junior.
With his second wife, Swedish model Hjördis (pronounced Yerdis).
Cutting a dashing figure in Enchantment in 1948.
With his friend Stewart Granger in the comedy adventure Soldiers Three in 1951.
All at sea with Glynis Johns in Appointment with Venus in 1951.
David found his perfect role as Phileas Fogg when he went Around the World in Eighty Days in 1956 with Shirley MacLaine and Cantinflas.
A good role for Niven as the playboy father in the controversial (for 1957) Bonjour Tristesse with Jean Seberg as his daughter and Deborah Kerr as his old flame.
An Oscar at last for Niven, as the seedy and bogus major befriended by mousey spinster Deborah Kerr in Separate Tables in 1958.
June Allyson shows her appreciation to butler David in My Man Godfrey in 1957.
Another fine mess, but a good comedy role for Niven in Please Don’t Eat the Daisies in 1960.
Sturdy Charlton Heston, stunning Ava Gardner and dependable David Niven all looking composed despite being besieged by thousands of Chinese Boxers in the 1963 epic 55 Days at Peking.
Not the usual image of James Bond, but in Casino Royale in 1967, Niven as Sir James Bond was sending up 007. He was good, the film was not.
David and Hjördis with Kristina, the secret daughter David had whom the Nivens officially adopted.
Niven, before he was struck by Motor Neurone Disease, still looking dapper in Paper Tiger, one last really good performance in 1975.
