“Horrible. Where is my rescue team?”
Sylvia’s smile vanished. “I called them off for the time being. Barty and Mildred wouldn’t leave your side. By the way, I don’t want you to worry about your parents. They are not answering their phones because we are rerouting the calls, not because something happened to them.”
“I’m not worried. Can’t you guys take care of Barty and his wife?”
She shook her head. “Too risky. We are waiting for them to go home and the night shift to start. The fewer people who are familiar with you, the easier it will be to thrall them and get you out unnoticed. That way we will have the entire night head start before anyone starts looking for you.”
That made sense. “Then we wait.”
Sylvia still seemed bothered.
“What’s wrong?”
“You have viral pneumonia.”
“Or so they think.”
“No, you really have pneumonia. The doctor took X-rays.”
Roni frowned as an uncomfortable feeling started deep in his gut. “Meaning?”
“Meaning that it might be a false alarm and you’re not transitioning. Actually, that’s what our doctor thinks. A transition is not accompanied by pneumonia.”
“So what do we do? Do we continue with the extraction plan, or abort?”
“You tell me. It’s up to you.”
