Lucy stopped in her tracks and looked around. Jake was grinning from ear to ear. Lucy flushed and winked. Jake laughed out loud, then moved away, his beautiful wife clutching his arm. He knew she’d just read his mind.
“What’s so funny?” Wylie asked.
“Nothing. Hey, who’s that little cutie over there with the four kids? Is she a relative you forgot to tell me about?”
Wylie looked everywhere but at the cutie and at Lucy. Finally, when Lucy pinched his arm, he said, “Oh…she’s…”
“Angie Motolo?”
“Ah…yeah, yeah. My mother said I should invite her.”
“I’m glad you did, Wylie. Even if she did break your heart. It mended, and now I have it.”
Wylie beamed. “Yeah, my mother said something like that. God, I love you!”
“I love you more!” Lucy said.
“Jeez, our first fight.”
Coop reared back and howled. Sadie did the same thing. Lulu leaped out of the flower basket and they raced off.
“There goes our family,” Wylie said happily. “Ooops, I forgot to tell you, Lulu is staying with us for the summer. Jake and his wife are going to Denmark for some kind of special something or other. That little girl is ours till they get back.”
“Perfect. Just perfect,” Lucy said, as she linked arms with her brand-new husband. Stars in their eyes, they strolled off to greet all their guests.
