Mom turned and buried her face in Dad’s shoulder. They hugged tight for a moment, and then she pushed gently away. The odd Risonian wrinkle on her forehead and nose deepened, the only sign that she was having trouble holding back her emotions.
Dr. Mangot called, “It’s time to board.”
The Medical Mission to Rison was ready. Dad and Jake led the way, followed by the Phoke pair, Dr. Mangot and Captain Bulmer. Mom, David, and Jillian had linked arms, as if they needed support to watch loved ones blast off toward danger.
The news reports were full of suspicions: There were fears that Jake Quad-de was returning home with intelligence that would allow the Risonians to attack. His mother, Ambassador Dayexi Quad-de assured the press that he only returned to bring back a cure for the Phoke. But no one was quite sure why Jake would risk his life for the Phoke. Equally feared was that Dr. Mangot was a Phoke ambassador who would negotiate a treaty of water people versus the land people. Until they returned, David, Mom and the rest of the sleepers would have public relations work to do.
Once on board, Jake and Dad made their way to the viewing port and strapped into seats where they could watch the crowd as they launched. The latest spaceships lacked the drama of twentieth century launches with their huge blasts of fire. Instead the newest propulsion systems, based on Risonian technology, were quiet and efficient, sending them hurtling toward space.
Jake had lived on the Obama Moon Base for about eighteen months and watched Earth’s blue oceans circle and circle them. Earth-rise and Earth-set. But this time, at the sight of the blue planet, home-sickness swept over him. He was Risonian born, but his Earth blood drew him to this small blue planet as surely as flowers heavy with pollen draws bees.
Earth filled the viewport for the first hour, but soon, it grew smaller and smaller, until it was a blue ball hanging in the black of space. His planet. Yes, it was his planet now. But to save his planet, there was work to be done on Rison.
Jake turned his face toward Rison and the Turco star system and hoped.
