Doubt entered her mind. “Why didn’t you say goodbye before leaving?”

When Larry approached her she didn’t back away. “Because I knew that if you opened your big beautiful blue eyes and smiled at me, especially while lying naked in my arms, I wouldn’t have been able to resist you. Amy, don’t you understand? I needed to have all past relationships over before we started ours. Maybe I should have stayed, I could have at least gotten—”

Disgust filled her. She couldn’t believe she had started believing in him again. “Say it! You could have gotten one more lay out of me before my husband appeared and ruined it all for you.”

  “It’s true, isn’t it?”

Amy felt like she’d been slapped. “Ry, if that’s all you want from me, then take it.”

She waited a minute for him to respond then made the decision for him. “Here let me help you decide.” She started removing her clothes and letting them fall to the floor until she was standing before him naked. “Well? What are you waiting for Ry?”

“You are so very beautiful Amy and I do desire you. More than you’ll ever know. But you belong to another. It wouldn’t be right.”

Amy felt the tears filing her eyes. Her vision started to blur waiting for him to make his move. “Is that all Ry, desire, want? No other emotions involved?”

“What other emotions could there be?”

Her tears fell at his cruel words and she didn’t try to hide them. “There’s affection, love, need!”

“I admire you and I care for you. You’re my friend Amy.”

“Friend?” Her voice choked up as her tears ran faster. “Well I don’t admire you or care for you Ry. I love you. But right now I don’t even like you. So maybe what I felt wasn’t love after all. Please leave my home this instant!”

  “Amy I—”

Amy wrapped her arms around her sides and turned away. “Don’t, I don’t want t hear it. Tell Marcus I apologize and that I wasn’t feeling well. I’ll write up my report and leave it on your desk in the morning. Please remind him that the spare key is where he always leaves it and to wake me when he gets home.”

“He is not staying in this house alone with you.”

“Yes he is, as you conveniently keep reminding me. He is my husband,” she whispered all the fight in her gone. She’d been made a fool of for the last time.

“Oh no he’s not! I will not have my—”

Hope kindled in her like the traitorous beast it was. Amy shied away from it terrified of getting hurt again. “You’re what, Ry?”

“My love.” He stepped up to close the distance between them and took her in his arms. “Please don’t let him share your bed. Dear God Amy, I don’t think I could stand it.”

Her mind felt numb from all the battering it had taken that day. “Your love?”

“My love! I’ve been in love with you since the day Hank introduced us.”

“You never said anything.” The hope she felt at his news was evident in her voice and she despised herself for feeling it.

“You weren’t exactly receptive until a few months ago.” He laughed throatily.

Amy had to put some distance between them, she couldn’t think straight when he held her so close. “I’m still married Ry. Until Marcus signs the papers, I’m legally his wife.”

  “A wife he’s ignored for a year”

“A year and a half.” She breathed praying he would kiss her. Tell her she belonged to him and demand she stay with him while Marcus was in town.

“If you promise me you won’t share your bed with him while he’s here, I promise to be patient.”

“Ry? What if I don’t want to?”

“Then I’ll back off. He does have a prior claim.”

The heartbreak on his face decided her. Happiness bubbled out of her. “No you dope. What if I don’t want you to be patient? I was deeply hurt that you had left me this morning without saying a word. You can never do that to me again.”

“I’m so sorry. I truly didn’t think beyond making certain when I claimed you as mine, nothing and no one could take you from me. Can you forgive me?”

“Then were both to blame. Come back to bed Ry. Let’s start the night over, and the day.”

Amy slid back into his arms before he could protest laying her head on his chest needing his comfort. She sighed when his arms tightened around her possessively and knew she’d won for now.

“You are extremely tempting Amy, but I promised I’d go meet the others at the site. If I don’t appear—”

Her heart sank. “Then promise to come back?”

“I can’t share your bed while your husband is in the next room Amy. Why—”

Amy couldn’t take anymore of this emotional roller coaster he was putting her through. She let him go and started turning away. “You’re right Ry, you should go.”

  “Amy, look at me.”

“I’m tired Ry, it’s been a very long and emotionally exhausting day.”

  “Amy!”

Amy started at the commanding tone in his voice. “Don’t Ry. Please just leave before I embarrass myself further.”

Larry laughed. “You are the most infuriating woman I’ve ever met.”

“Then you won’t mind leaving my home.”

“I would if you were angry with me again. Come here, I’ll put you to bed.”

Amy glared at him. “Don’t do me any favors.” The humor in his eyes infuriated her further.

“I’m not. Dear Lord, woman, I’m doing it to save my sanity. I can’t leave here with you standing there tempting me dressed or rather undressed like that.”

“Like what? Ry I ... Oh” His eyes lit up when her entire body turned red with embarrassment. “I completely forgot. Why didn’t you say something sooner?”

Larry leered at her. “Mainly because I was enjoying the view.”

“You self centered, arrogant, son of a bitch. You’re willing to have me parade naked around you, but you refuse to share my bed! Well you can’t have it both ways. One night of pure passion Detective Stevens isn’t enough for me. All it’s done is made me realize what I’ve been missing in my life. I’ve decided that—”

Amy shrieked in surprise when she found herself hanging upside down over his shoulder staring at the floor. “Ry what are you doing? Put me down this instant. You didn’t let me finish what I—”

She gasped as she felt him give her rear end a sharp slap. “Be quiet and stop squirming.”

“Put me down this instant. You have no right to—”

“Amy love, be quiet. I’ll put you down when we reach my desired destination, not a moment sooner.”

She kept forgetting how hard his body was beneath the awful suit he preferred to wear. “You’re going to pay for this Ry.”

“I’m counting on it, love.” She groaned in desire when he ran a hand possessively over her backside. Stroking her mound a few times to guarantee her subservience. Reaching her bedroom he dumped her onto the bed. Amy watched him with awe as he removed his own clothing in record time.”

“What are you doing? You very clearly stated that—”

  “I changed my mind.”

“Will you please stop interrupting me when I’m talking to you!” Seeing the devilish smile on his face her heart started to race. She wasn’t sure if it was panic or excitement, she did know her stomach was all knotted from his actions. “No, you can’t. Ry stop right there, don’t you dare remove your boxers! You’ll only hate me later for seducing you into going against your code of ethics.”

“My code of ethics? My dear loveable, exasperating woman. It wasn’t my code of ethics that that decided me. It was fear, fear that you would leave me for him.”

“Well then I decide that we aren’t going to do this. Not until you trust that I know what I want in my own life. Not until you trust me explicitly.”

Larry laughed at her panicked ramblings and stepped out of his boxers throwing them over his shoulder with a flourish. One look at his face and she kn
ew she was in trouble. “Amy love, I never stopped trusting you and I want you.”

  “Why?”

“Because you are everything I’ve ever wanted in a woman and more. Because I love you and you love me. Don’t you dare try and deny it.”

“Well I don’t. I …” Ry grinned and crawled on the bed. Pinning her to the mattress, he cupped her breast and leaned in to capture her lips in a kiss she couldn’t resist. “Oh Ry.” The words were whispered on a soft moan of pleasure.

Larry took those words as her assent. He rolled her over him so she could take control of this evening. He was content just having her in his arms.

“Well Detective, your partner isn’t coming. Care to tell me exactly what is going on here?”

  Wish I knew,

Hank thought trying vainly to figure out where Ry could be and coming up with only one possibility. “Maybe something important came up?” “Well I think you should call him and find out.”

  Not a chance!

Adams glared at his demanding tone. “Listen Agent Schwartz, I’m his partner, not his nurse maid. He’ll call when he finishes whatever he’s doing.” “I could order you to…seems you’re saved by the proverbial bell Detective.”

Hank snorted a habit he’d picked up from Amy. “Not really Agent Schwartz, I don’t answer to you.” Walking away for privacy he flipped open his cell. “Detective Adams here.”

“Sorry to bother you Detective, but I couldn’t reach the doctor or Detective Stevens.”

Hank grinned, his theory confirmed. “That’s alright, they’re probably occupied. What’s up?”

“Well Detective I strongly suggest you find them.”

Worry flashed through him. “What’s wrong Johansen?”

  “It’s Kazinsky, detective.”

That was the one name Hank didn’t want to hear tonight. Not with the doc and his partner missing. “Johansen spit it out.”

“He’s out, detective. They gave him bail.”

“Shit, keep trying Stevens’ cell. Hell, try his home and the doc’s home numbers too while you’re at it.”

  “Detective there’s more.”

Hank felt his stomach drop out. “What?”

“Kazinsky’s lawyer gave him a copy of the complaint warrant and arrest record.”

Hank started running towards his car. “Shit that means he has the doc’s home address.”

Hank stopped short as Schwartz grabbed his arm. “Who has my wife’s address?”

“Kazinsky; he got bail and his lawyer saw fit to give him copies of the arrest warrant information.”

“Would he dare? Is Amy in danger?”

Hank stopped him from taking off. “You may not want to hear this Schwartz, but I hope to hell Stevens is with the doc right now.”

“I’m not an idiot Adams,” Marcus yelled yanking his arm out of Hank hold. “I know they have something going. But that doesn’t change the fact that my wife, the love of my life may be in danger and isn’t aware of it because her lover decided to seduce her.”

“Marcus, technically she hasn’t been your wife in over a year, and honestly I’m on her side in this. You had a rotten way of showing her she was the love of your life.”

Hank was stunned that Schwartz’s partner was defending the doc’s actions.

“Great! I fucked up and it took me a while to figure it out. Does that mean I don’t deserve a second chance at happiness? No, don’t answer that.”

Hank felt a little sorry for the guy. “Listen I know for a fact that the doc and Stevens weren’t involved.”

“Until when? Yesterday? I am not blind Adams… Here Thomas you drive.”

“Listen the doc was really pissed at him. He nearly blew her cover with Kazinsky. I thought she would kill him then and there in the club. Hell you have the tapes, the last words she spoke to him were asshole and she was still tied and gagged to a chair in Kazinsky’s bedroom at the time.” Hank had to stop talking to catch his breath, he had stitches in his side from laughing at the remembered glare she’d cast on his partner.

“I listened to the tapes Schwartz. She really was pissed with Stevens, up to the point that she ordered him to and I quote… ‘Stay the hell away from me’. The only two people flirting with her were Kazinsky and Adams here.”

  “You?”

Hank brushed Marcus’ jealousy aside and grinned. “She’s a babe and she doesn’t wear a wedding ring. In the year and a half Amy’s been back, she’s never had a man visit, let alone spend the night in her home. What normal red blooded male wouldn’t hit on her?”

  “Detective Stevens according to you.”

Hank’s grin grew. “He just has more self control than I do.”

“So you believe Stevens isn’t having an affair with my wife.”

“Hell no. I believe that the moment he realized he could lose the doc first to Kazinsky, then to you, his self control went out the window. Why else—” Hank chuckled quietly. That’s why he was at Melissa’s this morning. Looking back at Schwartz Hank smiled sadly. “I change my answer Schwartz. I do believe that Stevens and the doc are finally getting it on, and it’s about damn time too.”

“What do you mean about time?”

Hank realized that Marcus was pissed at him but he couldn’t bring himself to care or stop grinning. “I mean between the sexual tension between those two was getting uncomfortable for everyone around them. If they’ve finally given in to their primal urges, then I’ll mourn the fact that Doc’s off the market. But I’ll be first in line to throw them a party… or a wedding, which ever comes first.”

“May I remind you that she was off the market before your partner decided to give in to his urges?”

“Then maybe you should have treated her better and made your presence known. He waited an entire year before making his move. Where have you been during all that time?”

Amy woke to find two strong arms protectively holding her, yet preventing her from turning over. With a smile of contentment, she attempted to turn towards him instead of away and felt the pressure ease just enough for her to complete the turn. Seeing the smug look of victory on his face, which was unbelievably still fast asleep, she felt a surge of love and irritation wash over her.

“Even asleep you’re arrogant,” she whispered fighting the urge to smile and failing miserably when he pulled her closer and placed a possessive kiss on her lips. Amy grinned. The moment their lips made contact, his eyes snapped open and she felt his member surge to life against her pelvis.

“Weren’t expecting me to be facing you?”

“No. But I must say it’s quite an enjoyable surprise.”

“Well you wouldn’t let me turn any other way.”

“Were you trying to leaving me, love?”

He nuzzled her neck affectionately causing her concentration to slip. “For a few minutes yes.”

“Then I’m glad I wouldn’t let you out of bed.”

Amy giggled at his possessive tone. “I promise to come right back.”

“You promise to stay dressed exactly the way you are now and I’ll let you go.”

“Fine you win.” Amy would agree to anything right now.

  “Kiss first. Release after.”

Amy laughed again. She’d been expecting this little stunt. “Detective, what will you demand from me next? I just wished to use the ladies room.”

His deep throaty chuckle warmed her. “Say, I love you Ry.”

Amy gave in without an argument. “I love you Ry.”

“Now my required kiss for your freedom.”

She purposefully pressed her chest up against him and planted another kiss on his lips before running off. Amy turned back to look at him before turning the corner. The smile she saw on his face as he watched her made her blush happily.

Amy stood before the bathroom mirror beaming at her reflection. It had been way too long since she’d see herself look this happy. Drying her hands on the towel she grinned at
her reflection. “Go get your man Doc.”

On her way back to the bedroom she stopped to see if Marcus had returned. Finding his room empty she grabbed both their cell phones before returning to the bedroom. “Here, you may want to check your messages. I have six on my cell that need to be answered. Want a drink?”

“Amy, get that beautiful butt back into this bed.”

Amy smiled at his teasing. “Here catch,” she called tossing his cell phone. “Now mine. You may be able to live on love alone, but I’m parched.”

“Don’t you dare go parading all over this house dressed like that. What if your husband comes back?”

Amy poked her head back into the room. “I already checked his room. He’s not here. Besides you made up the rules.”

“Amanda Josephine Allens you did not just admit to entering that man’s room while you were naked!”

Amy laughed at the frustrated cry he let out.

“Ry it’s Hank, call me back the minute you get this message.”

“Ry buddy, I know the doc is the hottest thing on two legs but this is important buddy, you have to call me back.”

“Detective Steven this is DA Michali. Kazinsky’s out. The judge gave him bail. He also has the arrest warrant information. Just thought you should know.”

“Partner it’s me again. We lost him. Kazinsky lost his tail about thirty minutes ago. I hope to God you’re still gracing the doc’s bed cause I have a sick feeling she’s in deep shit. Get her out of there. Take her to your place or mine. Agent Schwartz is going crazy trying to find her, she isn’t answering her phone either. Call me buddy, let me know you’re safe.”

“Amy honey. Answer me baby. Amy!”

The desperation in his voice made her delirious with need for him.

“I’m right here Ry. Handsome, you know I would never leave you?” Amy’s seductive smile wilted when she saw him standing up a serious expression on his handsome face.

“Get dressed were out of here now.”

  “What’s wrong? Are you regretting—”
