Ruthie squeezed her eyes shut. “Shit. Dad went ballistic, didn’t he? I knew he would if he found out. His blood pressure…”
“Big Mike is fine. Siobhan talked him down and suggested the deal. Those two are good together.”
Ruthie opened her eyes and blew out a breath. “Thank goodness. And yes, they are good together. I’d better make sure Dad’s booked a good restaurant to take Siobhan for their date. I have visions of somewhere like Burdock’s Fish and Chips, or Nando’s for a chicken dinner.”
Shane laughed and leaned over and kissed her, properly this time. When they broke apart, he looked her in the eyes and smoothed her hair back from her face. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, Ruthie. You’re not long back in Kilpatrick, and we’re just starting to get to know one another again. What I do know is how being with you makes me feel. When we’re together, I feel whole. I hadn’t realized I had a chunk missing until you walked back into my life. Will you take a chance on us?”
Her chest swelled and she pulled him close. “Yes, Shane. Yes.”
Epilogue
Two Year’s Later
Shane raced into the emergency department and charged up to the reception desk. It was unoccupied. Shit. Heart pounding, he spun around and pounced on a passing nurse. “I’m looking for Ruthie Delaney,” he said breathlessly. “I was told she collapsed.”
The nurse surveyed him with a dubious expression. “One moment. I’ll check the register.”
The woman slipped behind the counter. While her fingers clicked over the keyboard, Shane tapped his foot with ill-concealed impatience. What the hell was taking her so long? After what seemed like an age, the nurse glanced up. “Mrs. Delaney is in consulting room 12. She’s with the doctor now. Do you want to go up to her?”
“Yes, please.”
The nurse gestured to the ominous looking door that separated the reception area from the hospital beyond. “Go through the door and walk to the end of the corridor. Room 12 is on right hand side.”
“Thanks,” Shane called over his shoulder, already barging through the door. He ignored the nurse’s squawk that he should slow down. When he’d received Dan’s text message to say that Ruthie had been taken ill, he’d been out walking Flash while the others finished the preparations for Shane’s birthday party. The walk had turned into a sprint back to his car and a mad dash to the hospital, breaking several rules of the road along the way.
Room 6. Room 8. Room 10. And, finally, Room 12.
Shane knocked on the door and entered without waiting for an invitation.
His stomach relocated to his throat. Ruthie lay on an examination table, deathly pale and hooked up to an ultrasound. “The baby?” he managed hoarsely. “Is the baby—?”
Ruthie turned to face him and her pale face lit up with a smile. “Everything’s fine, Shane.”
“Oh, thank God,” he said in an exhale. “What happened? Are you all right?”
The doctor, a cool blonde in her early forties, stepped back from the ultrasound machine. “Your wife has low blood pressure. It’s very common, especially in a multiple pregnancy. We’ll keep an eye on it, but as she’s otherwise fit and healthy, I don’t think it will cause a problem.”
Shane’s mind reeled. “Back up a sec. Did you say multiple pregnancy?”
A mischievous glint sparkled in Ruthie’s eye. “Yes, she did. We’re expecting twins. Happy birthday, Shane.”
