½ cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 egg yolks, beaten
3 squares Baker’s unsweetened chocolate
1 ¼ cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Sift together 3 times. Cream the butter, then add sugar gradually. Mix together until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks and chocolate. Then add the flour and milk alternately adding just a little at a time to the mixture. Beat after each addition until smooth. Add vanilla and fold in the egg whites.
Bake in two greased 9 inch layer pans at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Allow the cakes to cool on a wire rack before removing from the pans.
Icing
Ingredients:
3cups powdered sugar
2/3 cup cocoa
1 stick butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 to 5 tablespoons heavy cream
Sift the sugar and cocoa together into a large bowl. Combine 1 cup of the sugar and cocoa mixture with the butter and 1 tablespoon of the heavy cream. Beat until smooth. Add another cup of the sugar mixture and another tablespoon or two of cream, beating the mixture until smooth. Add the remaining sugar mixture and cream and beat well. Beat in the vanilla. Add more heavy cream, a tablespoon at a time, if needed to get the consistency you want. Spread the icing over the cakes.

Sauekraut Salad
Ingredients:
1 qt. Kraut
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped mango
1 ½ cup sugar
½ cup vinegar
¼ cup oil
Mix sugar, vinegar and oil in a large bowl. Add the kraut, onions, celery and mango. Stir and refrigerate an hour or two before serving.
