As great as this is, I can’t fall asleep. I shift around, unable to get comfortable.
Jase squeezes my chest. “What’s up?”
“This isn’t working.”
“Then I can move.” He starts to move, but I stop him.
“No. That’s not what I meant. I mean, the way things are between us.”
“What?” Mykayla shoots upright, breaking in before I can continue. “What are you talking about?”
“Hang on. I mean, I can’t just see you both once a week. It’s not enough. We need to change it up.”
“Oh. Okay.” She visibly relaxes. “I thought you meant us. That we’re not working out.”
“No, of course not. Come back here.” I wrap my arms around her again. “This is great. But it’s not enough. We’re all too far apart from each other. I know it’s not like we can easily get together any time but on the weekend. So I want to change that.”
“How do you think that can change, Linc?” Jase rubs his face into my hair.
“I was thinking maybe we could move closer together. Or, you know. Get a place together.”
“Really?” Mykayla turns in my arms so she’s facing me. “You want us to move in?”
“It’s the best course of action I can come up with.”
She puts on a mock serious face. “Yes. That makes sense. I concur.”
I give her a squeeze. “You making fun of me again?”
Mykayla gives her head a vigorous shake. “Never. At least, not about something like this. You are serious, aren’t you?”
“Of course. Are you?”
“Yes.” She doesn’t even hesitate. “There’s nothing I want more, than to spend more time with the men I love.”
Love? It’s the first time she’s said that. I don’t blush easily, but heat’s rising to my cheeks. She can’t help but notice.
“That’s the first time I’ve said that out loud, isn’t it. I guess I got so used to thinking it, I didn’t quite realize.” She plants her lips on mine. “I love you, Linc.” She leans over me so she can reach Jase. “And you. I love you, Jase.”
He kisses her, squeezing me in between them. “I love you.” He hugs me back into him again after she settles in my arms again. “You too, Linc.”
My heart wants to break through my ribs. I feel the same way, but it’s mixed in with a whole boatload of fear. Familiar anxiety rearing its head again. This never works out. Love.
The air thickens with something like tension. They’re waiting for me to respond too. Or say something. Anything. I can’t do it. It gets worse with every single passing second.
Mykayla turns to face me again. I can’t meet her eyes. “You don’t have to say it, Linc. Not until you’re ready. Until you feel the same way.”
“I do feel the same way.” The words leave my mouth almost before I know what I’m saying. “I do. I love you.”
Her face lights up in a way I’ve never seen before. She’s glowing. And then she’s kissing me. I hold her to me. I said it. Now that I’ve done it, I don’t know why I was having so much trouble with it. Nothing’s changed. Except now Mykayla knows how I feel. And that’s everything.
She turns around in my arms again to lean back against me. With the way we’re all lying together, I couldn’t face Jase now even if I wanted to.
Again the silence turns awkward. He’s tensing up behind me. I reach my arm back, winding it around him as much as I can from my awkward position. I swallow hard.
“You too.” My voice is so low, I’m not sure he heard me. “I love you too.”
His grip tightens around my body. He heard me. I know it’ll get easier to tell him too. It’s not like I don’t feel it. And maybe soon I’ll get used to it not meaning that things will immediately fall apart.
“So, what’s your suggestion, Linc? How do we figure out where to move?”
I wasn’t sure how they were going to react to my suggestion. Now it all feels okay to talk about. Maybe something good can come out of saying I Love You after all. “I know you guys like where you live. But what about moving in to my place? It’s not too far from the city, and not too far from the wilderness either.”
Jase isn’t saying anything. I reach back to him again. “What do you think?”
“I’ve put a lot of work into my house. It’s not something I’m ready to give up.”
At least he can’t see how disappointed I am. “Right. Okay. We’ll figure something else out then.”
“I’m not saying no. As much as I’d like us all to live at my place, I know it’s not realistic for you, Mykayla. Not with you needing to get to the office everyday. You’re remote like I am, Linc. You and I are the most flexible. And as much as I don’t want to live in the city again, I’d do it for you, Mykayla.”
“You guys know how much I’ve always wanted to live in Manhattan. I do love it there. But it’s not like my apartment’s so great. I mean, it’s not much bigger than the size of Linc’s bedroom. I’m getting a little tired of having no space around me every single night that I come home. I don’t mind giving it up. Not at all. I could get to work from here, no problem. As long as we’re all together.”
“We wouldn’t even have to stay in my place if we don’t want to. It’s just this town is really halfway between everything any of us wants. But not if we’re not all agreed on it.”
Jase rubs at my arm. “It makes the most sense. I could come out here for now. Keep my place, decide what to do with it later. Or if I can swing it, keep it to use as a winter place. We could go there and spend time in the winter. Just like when we were stuck in Sam’s cabin. But without the lack of heat, power and food.”
“Yeah, we’ll see. So. Jase. Are you saying you’re willing to move in here?”
“Yes. If it doesn’t work out that well, we can figure something else out. For now, it’s the best solution. Right in the middle.”
“That’s the best place to be.” Mykayla escapes from my arms and climbs in between Jase and I. We both turn to her, our arms covering her and holding onto each other.
Mykayla and Jase are moving in. My throat thickens. This is better than I ever hoped for. Jase, Mykayla and me. We’re going to be together all the time.
Bound by something stronger than anything else.
Love.
I can’t imagine anything more perfect.

Chapter 1
“What the fuck?” Blake stood in the doorway, jaw agape.
“That’s no way to greet your best friend in the entire world, Hawker,” Scott said, walking right past Blake into his apartment. “Especially since it’s been…what. Four months?”
“Five.” Blake closed the door, a slow grin spreading over his face. The moment Scott dropped his two large gear bags on the floor, he caught him up in their usual bro hug.
“And I wasn’t expecting you until next week.”
“I got everything worked out early. Thought I’d come down and chill with you, man. I mean, if that’s okay with you. If not, I can find a hotel. No problem.”
“Of course it’s okay. More than okay. We’ve got the room.” Blake forced a grin. It’s not like he didn’t want Scott to stay with him. Not exactly.
“So, this is your new place? Nice.” Scott headed off into the living room, his big muscled body immediately dominating the whole space. “Awesome view.”
“Yeah, the condo’s not super big, but the view makes it worth it. We’re not totally settled in yet, but we’re getting there. You want a beer?”
“You know it.” Scott flopped down onto the sofa. “You can give me the tour later.”
Out in the kitchen, Blake tried to get himself under control. Scott showing up on his doorstep unexpectedly had thrown him right off his game. Of course he was happy to see him. He was the one who’d invited Scott to stay when he found out his friend was moving to Chicago.
But it was going to be difficult to keep his crush in check when he didn’t have the advance warning he was counting on.
Scott had no idea how Blake felt about him, and Blake meant to keep it that way. It was nothing, really. He’d never experimented sexually with a guy and he wrote it off as curiosity. And the fact that Scott was insanely handsome and well-built was pretty much the main reason. Only reason. That was the only reason. Curiosity about a hot guy. That’s it.
No-one could deny Scott’s attractiveness. He knew it, too, and he took full advantage whenever he could. Taking home a new woman after every game. But Scott was never an arrogant ass about it, so Blake stayed just as good of friends with him as they had been since they were living next door to each other as kids.
“So where’s Loralei?” Scott took the beer bottle from Blake, starting to drink before Blake even had a chance to sit down across from him. “She leave you for someone better already?”
Blake smirked at him. “Just because you can’t get a woman to stick around for more than one night, doesn’t mean the rest of us have that problem. She’ll be home from work in a couple hours.”
Scott laughed. “Yeah, right. My first love is hockey. Always has been, always will be.”
“Playing with the Stormers isn’t going to be the same without you.” It was a huge understatement. They’d been on the same hockey teams all their lives. It wasn’t right that he was in the NHL and Scott wasn’t going to be right there with him.
Scott turned away. “Yeah, well. They’re lucky to have the Hawk on their side. You’ll have to manage without me somehow.”
“Hey, I was just about to get in a quick workout before Lora gets back. You want to come along?”
“Sounds good. Where can I change?”
Blake showed him to the spare bedroom, forcing himself to look
away fast. Scott was already pulling his t-shirt up before Blake had even turned to leave.
To distract himself, Blake went to find a water bottle for Scott to use. He and Lora had only moved into their new place a couple weeks ago. He couldn’t remember where everything was yet, especially since the two of them had pretty different ideas about what was supposed to go where.
By the time he found a spare bottle and was starting to fill it up, Scott joined him in the kitchen. His workout clothes were baggy, but his body was impossible to hide. Strong calves were left exposed by his shorts, and the sexy arms revealed by his t-shirt were hard to ignore. Blake handed him the water bottle, trying not to check him out.
“So, where we going?”
“There’s a gym here in the building. It’s not big but the equipment’s not bad at all, and my regular gym is too far to get to now. Lora and I have plans to go out for dinner right when she gets back.”
“That’s cool. I can find something else to do.”
They stepped out of the elevator on the second floor and Blake led the way to the gym. “No way. You’re coming with us. It’s not a romantic thing, it’s just something we always do in the middle of the week.”
Scott started to say something, but Blake cut him off. “Lora’ll kill me if you don’t come along.”
“Fine.” Scott shrugged, glancing around the empty gym. “You’re right. Not bad at all in here.”
“Yeah, it’s not crap like most apartment gyms, they maintain it pretty well. It was one of the main reasons I wanted to live in this building. The gym sold me, and the view sold Lora. So here we are.”
