Ordeal (William Wisting Series) Page 32

by Jorn Lier Horst

‘This is Olav Müller, the defence lawyer,’ he heard through the laughter in the living room.

‘Thanks for your help with the case,’ Wisting said.

  ‘Am I disturbing you?’

  ‘It’s fine. What’s it about?’

In the living room Hammer made farting noises, making everyone laugh but Ingrid.

‘It’s to do with Dan Roger.’

  ‘What about him?’

  ‘He’s dead.’

Wisting withdrew all the way into the kitchen. ‘What did you say?’

‘He died of an overdose last night. I thought you’d want to know.’

Wisting had to sit down. The news came so suddenly he felt dizzy. It was difficult to be surprised that Dan Roger Brodin’s life would end this way, but he had not imagined that it would happen so soon. It was a possibility to which his eyes had been closed.

Questions whirled in his brain, but all that he managed to do was thank Müller for the information. He pulled himself together, and let the thought sink in that if Brodin had still been in prison, he would also still be alive.

A burst of laughter erupted in the living room, dispelling the bleak thought. ‘Grandfather!’ Hammer shouted. ‘Nappy change!’

Wisting left the phone on the kitchen table. ‘Coming!’ he answered, grinning broadly, and went out to join the others.
