  * Rios: large estuaries running deep into the mainland, formed by rivers descending from Fouta Djallon to the coasts of Guinea and Guinea Bissau.

  * The almami: the king of kings, the monarch of Fouta Djallon.

  * Saint-Gobain made its fortune by buying the Olivier and Perret factories.

  * Bôwé (singular bôwal): high grassy plateaus characteristic of Fouta Djallon. Touldé: tabular-shaped granitic hillocks.

  * Porto (plural Portôbé): the Fula name for Europeans.

  * Lougan: the vegetable garden generally found around huts in Fouta Djallon.

  * Tierno Balêdio: nickname given Noirot by the Fulas. Literally: His Lordship the Black.

  * Today, the former is the seat of the presidency of the Republic of Guinea, and the latter the Conakry museum.

  * Adjami: Fula writing in Arabic script.

  * Translator’s Note: bismillahi means in the name of God in Arabic.

  * Destroyed and rebuilt several times, it now houses the Conakry museum. The hut is intact and the neighborhood is still known as Sandervalia (“Sanderval’s place,” in the Susu language).

  * The king of Labé was arrested a few years later and exiled to Dahomey, then to Mauritania, where he died in 1912.
