“She smells so good,” Stavros said as he leaned down to give his daughter a bit of a kiss. Seeing how much he loved his children only made Imani love him more.
While Imani was recovering in the hospital, Stavros confessed his love to her. After the attack, they held each other while the ambulance came, Imani giving birth as soon as they pulled into the hospital. There wasn’t a long explanation and they didn’t talk too in depth about their relationship. They didn’t have to, however. It was clear that the two shared a special connection, and things fell into place easily, not needing an explanation. Both knew that they were good for each other and seeing the love they shared for their little girl only solidified it.
“What would I do if I didn’t have you two girls?” Stavros asked Imani. She smiled and looked back at him. She was still sore and tired, but hearing his sweet words definitely helped make her feel better. It took Stavros almost losing everything to realize what he really had.
“I ask myself that every day,” Imani told him. Neither of them would have ever guessed they’d end up in that situation if they were told a year ago how things might turn out. Stavros didn’t want kids in the first place, but there he was widowed with a son. He frequented bars, looking for someone to keep his bed warm, only to stumble into the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. It wasn’t love at first sight, but that only made it stronger. It was love that was there the whole time, in the back of their heads, but they had to work through it on their own, overcoming the obstacles many couples would have potentially fought over. It seemed they did everything backwards, but they ended up right where they wanted to be.
Imani was just looking for a job and instead, she got a family. her life would never be the same, but she couldn’t be more excited about that. She didn’t want to go back to the way things used to be. She felt whole now, and so did Stavros. It was clear that a girl like Imani was exactly what that family needed, and she was glad to be the final piece to such a beautiful puzzle.
He agreed to start working less hours, taking a “maternity leave,” for himself and cancelling all meetings for the next six months. He had so much money and power that he could do whatever he wanted, and seeing his adorable daughter and beautiful wife made him realize that there was no amount of money worth keeping him from them too long. He was a different person now that he wasn’t working 70 hours a week. He was patient, kind, sweet, and humble. He was exactly like Darius. If you just took them out of that negative scenario and reminded them that they were both boys that deserved love and care, they could conquer the world.
Imani was afraid at first when she found out she was pregnant with her daughter, wondering if she would turn out ornery and fussy like Stavros and Darius. She didn’t want to raise an arrogant little girl. None of those traits were genetic, rather, behavior that had come along with their lifestyle. Now that Imani was there to keep everyone in line, they were reminded of all the wonderful things that they had, certainly making easier for them to be a bit humbler.
Stavros and Imani had a special connection where it felt like they had known each other all along. They were still getting to know each other, and they had to find things out in different ways like many couples that recently started dating too. Only, everything that she found out about Stavros was something that made her fall deeper in love with him. She was afraid she’d realize that there was a dirty secret he had that would keep them apart, but so far, everything was playing out like a fairytale. She still had those giddy nerves that high school girls did when their crush asked them to prom. At the same time, she was comfortable around him, feeling like he was a part of her and she was a part of him.
Now that he wasn’t always working, they could have family dinners together, watch movies, and play games. Imani loved just hanging out with her boys, both of them letting their silly sides come out when they would get together. Darius was creative and wild, and Imani discovered he got that from his father. She never would have thought when she first met Stavros, but it was clear that he was a unique individual that Imani was lucky to have met.
Stavros loved how bold she was, the independent woman in her seeming even more attractive. He was so proud to have her as the mother of his daughter, knowing she’d grow up to be strong and confident just like her mother. Imani had effortless beauty that radiated through Stavros every single day. They hadn’t slept apart since the night of the attack, Stavros even sleeping in a chair next to Imani’s hospital bed. She was relieved to have him to herself, and to have a warm body to fill up the empty space that laid next to her every night for so long. When they got together and held each other tight, it was clear to Imani that they were supposed to be together. They fit like puzzle pieces, and Imani didn’t think that could be a coincidence.
“Are you almost packed?” Stavros asked Imani. They hadn’t flown with a newborn yet, but they were about to take a journey to the states. They would get the chance to see Imani’s father as well as Ursa, hoping that the two could meet up and hit it off. Imani hadn’t voiced her desire to have them get together, but it would certainly be a relationship of convenience (for her). Her father had dated around, but still didn’t’ have much luck. He had been a bit thrown off at first when he heard about Imani and Stavros, wondering if the age difference was something he had to worry about. He found out quickly that wasn’t the case, seeing that Imani and Stavros were actually a couple to admire and envy.
“Well Theo’s all packed. But I can’t forget about myself,” Imani said. Forgetting about her needs was a common theme in the past month since she had Theo, a little scatterbrained as a new mom. Having Stavros and Petra there to help out made things so much better. She pictured what it might be like to live in a house or apartment alone, her being the only one there to take care of her child. She had a few mental breakdowns already, her body clearly adjusting back to normal and trying to get her hormones in check. If they weren’t around, how much worse could it have been? Stavros was always willing to help, and Petra had a good understanding of what was normal for a newborn and what they might need to call a doctor for.
Darius was also a sweet boy who was taking care of his sister tremendously. He helped her when Imani bathed her and would feed her from a bottle if Imani was feeling too tired. They all read to each other every night. Darius acting out the stories. Imani couldn’t wait until Theo was old enough to laugh for real and able to play back with her brother. Seeing the siblings together made her want more babies, but that would be a discussion for at least a year later. They were doing great, amazing actually, and Imani was a little terrified at losing that at any moment. She did her best to enjoy what she had and live in the moment but having so much to lose made it a bit harder to not be scared of getting that taken away. Never in her life had she shared so much love with others, making a real and happy family with Darius, Theo, Stavros, and Petra. They were each other’s best friends and support system. She was the luckiest girl in the world to be surrounded with so much love.
“Are you excited to see my dad?” Imani said, referencing the trip they were about to take as a family back to the United States.
“Always,” Stavros said. Imani was excited that they were already friends, not having to worry if Stavros would be a good match in her dad’s eyes or not. Stavros leaned over and gave Imani kiss before planting another one on the soft and smooth head of his little girl.
The two were married still and neither of them asked each other whether or not they wanted to change that, but it was the last thing on their mind as they recovered from the attack and celebrated the birth of Theo. Imani wore her fake ring still as well, and Stavros kept his wedding ring on, too. Imani was happy to see he was dedicated, but part of her wondered if she would ever have a real ceremony to confess her love for Stavros. She had everything she ever wanted, but there was still a part deep down inside that wanted to have that big extravagant wedding she’d always dreamt of.
What Imani didn’t know was that Stavros was waiting to ask her fat
her’s permission, so he could have her real hand in marriage. Imani deserved a celebration and Stavros couldn’t wait to let her really know just how madly in love with her he was.
