Harry Doing Good Page 19

by Canaway, W. H.

‘Never mind love, I’ll make it up to you. I’ll be the friendliest friend in the whole world.’

  ‘That’s what I need, David.’

‘I know what you need,’ he had said…

And so there she was, submerged, scarcely conscious, taking in no sense data save for sexual ones, the weight of David no longer felt except as part of pleasure, her being drowning in pleasure.

Similarly engrossed and plunging, David heard nothing, felt nothing until the weight of Harry bestrode him. Harry yanked the man’s head sideways by the long hair, drove the knife in the throat and tugged outward with it; Cheryl, eyes closed, came to awareness only at the sound of a choked gurgle and a sudden hot cascade over her face and breasts. Harry shoved the man aside: he threshed and spouted, the movements growing swiftly feebler.

Cheryl opened her mouth to scream, and Harry hit her in the face with his free hand.

‘Justice,’ he said, feeling full of virile power, ignoring flashing lights and the sound of voices. Then he began to strike with both hands, into a blinding light that seemed to him the light of perfect fulfilment.

  Voices, dimly heard.

  ‘Jesus.’

  ‘Get him.’

  ‘Over here, quick.’

Disarmed, dragged upright and away, he could see nothing but the light, though he felt the strength of the arms which held him; the light in dazzling starry circles, effulgent nebulae in an expanding cosmos. The voices went on.

He bowed his head, a small rope of saliva pendent from his lips, then stood up straight and wiped his mouth. He turned away from the light, and saw Waring’s face; other people.

Waring said, ‘You’ll come along quietly now, won’t you, Mr Eckington? Just a little way: we’ve got a car waiting.’

  Harry nodded, then sighed wearily.

A voice said, ‘That’s it, come along. You’ll be able to tell someone all about it then.’

They were moving, away from the figures lying still behind them. Harry looked at Waring, and spoke quietly and reasonably.

‘It was for everybody’s good,’ he began.
