Secret Passages Page 39

“And Simpson College,” Angie’s firm, clear voice cut through the air as she stood up. “Simpson College will be pleased to announce that priceless documents from the British Museum were found in its archives and that they have been returned to the museum.”

She glared at Sfumato. “They might even send me to London for the announcement.”

Sfumato staggered toward the front door. His men came to his side to support him. As one man opened the door, Rennie looked at the old man with compassion. She left the table and went to him.

“I want you to know this was not done against you but was done for truth.”

“I don’t understand, Miss Haran. Do you realize that without scholarly verification and support, the authenticity of the letters will remain in question?”

“It’s not as important that the letters are verified as it is that the presence of Jesus is renewed in people’s hearts and minds.”

His head dropped, and his men helped him out of the house to a car. Another man got out of the car and opened a door for him.

Rennie and Roger followed onto the porch. As the car drove away, Rennie heaved a deep sigh and leaned against Roger.

Returning inside, Matthew greeted her with a warm hug.

“My dear,” he said, “this is an historic moment. I thank God for you. Now, I need to make two telephone calls. One is to my friend Donald in London, to let him know what has transpired. The other will be to my sister, Mary. I would like to see if I might be able to visit her when I return. My grandson David might also find an interest in this. In fact, I’d like you to meet him.”

Angie placed her arm around Matthew.

Rennie winked at her. “Hey, I didn’t know about Simpson and that announcement.”

“Well, they aren’t aware of it either, at least right now.”

Roger yawned and stretched. “Well, if you don’t need the bus driver anymore, I’m going to turn in.”

Rennie took his hand. “Thanks, good friend.”

He squeezed her hand. “So, what are you going to do now?”

“Everything is so different. I think I’ll go see my parents. There’s a big gap between us that needs to be filled. I’ve had a taste of belonging and love. I want more, and I want to share it.”

“Friends,” Matthew said, “this old traveler needs to find a bed for a long, glorious rest. Rennie, in the morning, perhaps we can chat about what’s next.”

“Definitely. One item on my list is a return to London. The British Museum will be a place to start.”

  Acknowledgement

The interplay of characters with plot, scenes and subjects is a tapestry that each reader experiences in their own way, with personal attention to detail or as distant imagery. Some will wonder how one thread connects to another, while others sit back and enjoy the flow of colors across a full design.

It is this sparking of ideas into unknown realms of thought and feeling that makes writing a privilege and a responsibility to writers. The offering of a pathway into little worlds of discovery of the mind and soul is a profound opportunity.

It is my hope that all readers of literature in any form taste the words and run their fingers gently over the material that engages them so they too can become aware of the special moments that personally await them.

Reading is a unique experience, and you dear reader, are a unique person on the way to becoming even more interesting. Journey on.

Thank you for being and becoming, and for allowing this work to be part of that process.
