Beverly Hills Demon Slayer

Frieda tried to give me a stern look and failed. She bust out into a grin. "Oh, babe. I need to teach you where to shop."

"I'll go!" Shiloh said, dragging Damien over to us. "I need to start dressing better," she vowed. "No more pastel nightmares." She ran a hand through her gloriously tousled hair. "I'm going sexy."

Damien's eyes followed her every move as if the mere thought of it turned him on.

  Oh Lord.

"Thanks for getting everyone out of there," I said to her husband.

He forced himself to tear his eyes off his wife. "Glad to do it," he said, reaching a hand out to me. "It's nice to finally meet you."

We shook hands in a belated hello.

Dimitri gave the demon slayer a handshake as well. It seemed strange, given the circumstances, but who was I to fight a little normalcy?

"Shiloh tells me she's been working with both of you," Damien said. His tone suggested he was surprised. He shouldn't be. His wife had some amazing gifts.

I hadn't expected it, either, but there it was.

"She's one of a kind," I told him. "We'll have to have you guys over and we can tell you about it."

"They can also take home their new pet," Dimitri added.

Shiloh clasped her hands to her chest. "You'd let me keep Babydoll?!"

In a heartbeat. "We already have a dog," I told her.

"Damn straight," Pirate agreed, weaving in between my legs.

All around us, the witches were cleaning up from the battle. Creely had assembled a team to repot plants. Grandma was back there, barking orders at the witches who were recovering unbroken spell jars. Others gathered pottery shards into large bins. They didn't waste a thing.

Rachmort stood a short distance away, talking on his cell phone. No doubt he had a lot to explain to headquarters.

I couldn't believe everyone had survived the battle. It was a first, and it was a huge victory.

Dimitri slipped an arm around me. "What are you thinking?"

I gazed up at him with love. "That we're a great team." He'd always been there when I needed him most. And he'd given me the freedom to be the best version of myself. "That even when you're not with me, you're there."

His love helped me believe in what could be. I could be confident without selling my soul. He'd made me stronger. I didn't need demon powers to feel good about myself. I just needed people who believed in me.

"I'm glad," he said, leaning down to me. He kissed me and as his lips moved over mine, I thanked the heavens for my husband, this drop-dead sexy man who would move heaven and Earth to be with me. Who loved me more than I could ever imagine.

  Nearby, Carpenter groaned.

I broke away to find the necromancer staring at the sky. "What is with you people?"

Dimitri grazed his hands over my back, found my waist, and tugged me playfully against him. "I hope you find out someday," he said to the necromancer.

"Don't hold your breath," I said, rubbing up against him. It would take a special kind of woman to handle Carpenter.

Pirate, the little devil, wormed in between our legs. "What's next?" he demanded.

I looked down to find him waging his tail, his expression eager.

Dimitri shrugged. "I'm starving. Want to grab an In-N-Out Burger?"

I tried to wrap my mind around it. "That's so…normal." We'd just survived a demon attack. We needed to clean up and do other things. I wasn't sure what, but there had to be something more responsible that needed my attention.

But I hadn't eaten since that lunch with my dad and we were already into the next day. "What time is it, anyway?"

"Nearing six," Dimitri said. He glanced out at the witches. "When we realized you were gone last night, we started work. We haven't stopped since."

They'd risked their lives and their home for me. "I suppose we do owe them takeout," I said.

Although we'd have to take Shiloh's convertible in order to fit it all.

I shared a smile with Dimitri. He could be supernatural and enjoy the natural world as well. And maybe I could too.

  ***

At about three in the morning—the devil's hour in case anyone is keeping track—we sneaked down to our little beach on the edge of paradise.

We'd helped the witches get everything back together, and persuaded the necromancers to stay on a few days as their guests. We'd said good-bye to Shiloh and her husband, who had retreated to the Four Seasons to "rest." And we'd left Pirate and Flappy to get some sleep.

Dimitri and I should have been falling over sideways. Instead, we got a second wind. We had one more thing left to do.

I grasped his hand tightly as we hurried down the wooden boardwalk toward the beach. I pulled ahead, eager to make it down to the darkened seaside. He tugged me back into a scorching kiss.

  Nice try.

"Come on!" The sea grass reached out and tickled my back as I broke away and ran the last ten feet. He caught me around the middle and a screech of delight burst from my lungs.

"Keep a lid on it." He laughed, doing absolutely nothing to dissuade me as he spun me around. I couldn't stop laughing. He leaned me tight against his chest and planted a kiss on the top of my head. "They're going to hear."

Yeah, like Sarayh would mind. We glanced up toward the row of town houses on the rise and thankfully—surprisingly—no lights had popped on.

I turned around to face him. "Are you honestly complaining?" I asked, running my hands over his shoulders.

He gave a husky chuckle. "Hell no."

I let out a small cry as he picked me up suddenly before lowering me down to the sand. I nuzzled his neck and drew a line of openmouthed kisses up his throat and to his ear. He gasped lightly as I nipped the soft spot right behind his earlobe.

"We already have a reputation for sex on the beach," I murmured. "We might as well earn it."

He drew back, his eyes shining with love. "Anything for you."

Slowly, we removed each other's clothes and used them to make a bed in the sand. His strong, naked body stretched over mine and it startled me to realize how lucky I was.

I may never relate to my father as a person, but now I understood what it was like to go down that dark path, and how hard it was to come back from it.

I cupped Dimitri's face in my hands and gave him a long, slow kiss.

This man, his love, had made all the difference for me.

My father had never loved anybody enough to open that door. He didn't accept anyone close enough who could purify his soul.

I'd offered and he'd rejected that.

My dad had skipped town as soon as the Earl died. He'd offered no apologies. No good-byes to me or to his congregation.

At least the souls of his followers were free.

His church would grow out of fashion now that it lost its source of eternal youth. It would be another fad that came and went in Beverly Hills. I had to be satisfied with that and realize I couldn't change anyone, least of all my father.

I simply had to be grateful for the people in my life who did love me: the witches, Pirate, and most of all, Dimitri.

I kissed my husband slow and deep. I spread my legs, opening myself up to him in the most primitive way possible. I moaned as he settled his body between them.

He'd shown me happiness. He'd shown me love. He'd shown me what it meant to have a life.

And I couldn't be luckier to spend the rest of my life with him.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Angie Fox is the New York Times bestselling author of several books about vampires, werewolves and things that go bump in the night. She claims that researching her stories can be just as much fun as writing them. In the name of fact-finding, Angie has ridden with Harley biker gangs, explored the tunnels underneath Hoover Dam and found an interesting recipe for Mamma Coalpot's Southern Skunk Surprise (she's still trying to get her courage up to try it).

Angie earned a Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. During that time, she also skipped class for an entire week so she could read Anne Rice's vampire series straight through. Angie has always loved books and is shocked, honored and tickled pink that she now gets to write books for a living. Although, she did skip writing for a few weeks last year so she could read Lynsay Sands Argeneau vampire series straight through.

Angie makes her home in St. Louis, Missouri with a football-addicted husband, two kids, and Moxie the dog (who so far, doesn't talk…at least not in real sentences).
