Blackthorns of the Forgotten Page 30

by Bree T. Donovan

“That reminds me,” Gillean added, “we must try and find a very special player of the streets when we get there.”

  “Who’s that, Da?” Isabella asked.

“’Tis not the time for you to know yet!” Gillean laughed. “Give us a song, Sully!”

“Come on then, get yer guitar out, Faraday.”

“Ah, a captive audience, my favorite kind.” Gillean accepted his guitar from Declan.

He took a quiet moment before counting to three. They began on the same note, their music filling the car with the splendor and grace of a fey.

Adara abandoned her crossword, her specs resting on the bridge of her nose. A freedom so complete resided in her heart, like an unbound soul giving and receiving total forgiveness. The dusky sun flowed through the window, tingeing the two men with its purple pallet. The expression of love that passed between Gillean and Sully, and the haunting music they created was like an electric current surging through each of them. The children’s heads rested against one another as they fell captive to the spell of the music. They were united in their strength and diversity, like an aged tree rooted firmly in the earth, its many branches extending in different directions but all reaching for the same sky, bound to one center, forever.
