Alexandra put her hand over Rachel’s. “I miss you too, but I have Tracy.”
“Tracy is doing well. I think she may be interested in taking over the apartment by herself.”
“I’ll talk to her Monday evening,” Alexandra said, taking Rachel’s hand.
“Does that mean you won’t be over Monday night?”
“I’ll come over after I talk to her.” Alexandra grinned. “Okay?”
Rachel smiled as she took Alexandra into her arms. There would be enough time to talk, but now it was time to love one another.
*
Monday morning Rachel walked into her office after rounds. “Good morning,” she called to Helen and Callie. “How’s the new temp doing?” Rachel asked with a nod of her head.
Helen pursed her lips. “Can’t you force Alexandra to come back to work for you? Don’t you have any influence over her?”
Rachel sighed as she shook her head. “Alex likes her job and I’m not going to force her to work for me.”
“There has to be a way we can entice her back. Let’s threaten her,” Callie said with a laugh.
“Hey, you’re talking about my future wife.” Rachel’s hands went to her hips.
Helen and Callie were about to argue when they realized what Rachel had said. “Wife?” Helen asked, and Rachel nodded.
“You asked Alex to marry you?” Again Rachel nodded. “Did she say yes?” Callie asked with a giggle.
“That’s wonderful, Rachel. I’m really happy for you and wouldn’t you like to have your wife working with you every day?”
“You two are going to be the death of me. Let’s get to work.”
Alexandra walked into the apartment and found Tracy hard at work on her computer. “Hi, Tracy,” Alexandra said as she walked toward her.
“Hey. Didn’t think I’d see you today.”
Alexandra took a seat at the table. “I wanted to talk to you.” Her hands rested on the table.
Tracy’s breath caught as she looked at Alexandra’s hand. “What’s this?” She asked picking up her left hand.
“Rachel asked me to marry her.”
Tracy got out of her chair and lifted Alexandra up. “I think that’s great,” she said wrapping her arms around her. “Have you told your parents?”
“Not yet. I’ll call them in a few minutes. I wanted to talk to you first.” They took their seats again. “Rachel wants me to move in with her.”
“I’m happy for you, Alex. I really am.”
“Can you afford to take on the apartment by yourself?” Alexandra asked softly.
“Yes. I’m making good money and the rent isn’t a problem. Someday, I may want to be closer to the studio, but for now this is perfect.”
“Good. I think I’ll go call my parents now.”
“Tell them I said hello,” Tracy said as she went back to typing.
Alexandra decided to Skype her parents. She had sent them a text earlier to let them know. When their faces appeared, she smiled. “Hi, Mom and Dad.”
“Hello, dear. How are you?”
“I’m good.”
“How’s the weather, Alexandra?” Her dad asked.
“It’s warm Dad. Mom and Dad, Rachel asked me to marry her.”
“That’s wonderful, Alexandra.” Her mother dabbed her eyes. “Let me see the ring.”
Alexandra laughed. “How do you know I said yes?”
“Alexandra, we saw the two of you together. We could see the love,” Fernando said choking on his emotions too.
Alexandra held up the ring to the screen. “It’s beautiful, honey. So when is the big day?”
“We haven’t discussed that yet.”
“We want to be there, Alexandra.”
“I want you both to be there and Mary and Richard.”
“We’re so happy for you, honey.” Alexandra was now smiling.
“I’m happy too, Mom. We’ll let you know when we set a date. I’ll talk to you later in the week. Good night.”
“Good night, Alexandra,” her parents echoed.
Alexandra packed more clothes to take to Rachel’s house. “So I’ll guess I’ll see you in a few days, and I’ll let you know when I’ll get the rest of my things out of here.”
“Don’t worry, Alexandra. Have a good week.”
While Alexandra was speaking to her parents, Rachel was pacing trying to find the courage to call her parents and let them know the news.
Alexandra came in the back door of Rachel’s house and could hear her voice raised. She paused at the bottom of the steps.
“Mom, you’ve been against my relationship with Alex since the beginning. If you got to know her, you would see what a wonderful person she is.”
There was quiet in the house as Alexandra listened to only one side of the conversation.
“I told you I’m engaged and you want to fix me up with a doctor? I can’t believe what I’m hearing.” Alexandra could hear Rachel pacing back and forth.
“She’s not working for me any longer because of you and Dad interfering. Yes, I’m happy that Alex likes her job, but…” Her mother cut her off. “Fine, I won’t send you an invitation to the wedding.”
Alexandra heard the phone slam in the master bedroom. She climbed the staircase slowly and stood in the hallway in front of the master bedroom door. Rachel had her head down and Alexandra knew she was crying. Alexandra went into the room and sat next to Rachel. Her arm went around her as her other hand caught the tears that fell onto her cheek.
“It’s okay, honey.”
“No, it’s not. My mother is impossible.” Rachel turned and looked at Alexandra. “You heard my conversation?”
“I heard you screaming from downstairs.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to hear that. I bet your parents were happy for you?”
Alexandra nodded. “Are your parents still unhappy because I’m not a brilliant doctor?”
“They would still find something to complain about if you were a Nobel Prize-winning doctor.” Rachel wiped her eyes. “Did you talk to Tracy?”
Alexandra nodded. “Yeah, but maybe we should wait a while. I don’t want to cause friction between you and your family.”
“Honey, that friction has been there before you came into my life. As you see, I don’t spend a lot of time with my parents. I spend Thanksgiving and Christmas Day with them out of guilt, but we never celebrate any other holiday together.” Rachel took her hands and pulled Alexandra close. “Please don’t let them destroy our relationship. If we break up, they win.”
“What am I going to do with you?” Alexandra asked, looking into Rachel’s eyes.
“Love me. That’s all I ask.”
“You’ve already got that, Alex.”
CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR
Alexandra was just coming out of her building as Melissa Stanton walked by. “Hi, Melissa.” She called out.
“Alex. How are you?” Melissa asked wearing a wide smile.
“I’m good. How about yourself?”
“No complaints. Your cousin turned out to be a wonderful asset to my business.”
Alexandra smiled proudly. “I’m happy. I’m really happy for both of you.”
“So how’s my friend Rachel doing? I don’t get to see her too much these days.”
“Busy with work. You should come to dinner one night.”
“Have you two moved in together?” Melissa asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes.”
Melissa now looked at Alexandra’s left hand. She picked up her hand and said. “I see something else is new. When is the big day?”
“We haven’t set one yet. It’s complicated.”
“Her mother?” Melissa asked with a laugh.
Alexandra nodded embarrassed. “I don’t meet her standards,” she said with a shrug.
“Honey, no one could meet Roberta’s standards. No one is ever good enough for Roberta’s only child. She doesn’t care if Rachel is happy, and seeing you two together told me y
ou make Rachel very happy.”
“She makes me happy too, Melissa.” Alexandra’s smile was radiant as she spoke about Rachel.
“Well, I’ve got to run to a meeting. Tell Rachel to give me a call sometime.” Melissa left with a wave.
“I will,” Alexandra said with her own wave.
The meeting Alexandra had in the office went longer than she thought. As she pulled into Rachel’s driveway, she saw the house was dark. Alexandra got out of the car and looked over to the office. The lights were on in Rachel and Helen’s office. She walked to the back door and walked inside. “Hey, Helen. Didn’t expect to see you working this late.”
“I’m trying to get caught up on the billing,” she said, shaking her head.
“What do you mean? What about… I’m sorry, I don’t know the name of the person that took my job.”
Helen laughed. “The person,” she said laughing again, “we’ve had about six people plus temps since you left. Didn’t Rachel tell you?”
Alexandra shook her head.
“Then maybe I shouldn’t either,” Helen said, looking at her paperwork.
Alexandra took a seat and asked. “Tell me what’s going on?”
“Each person we hired was worse than the next. It’s been a revolving door around here. We now have a temp that at least can do part of the work.” Helen reached across the desk and patted Alexandra’s hand. “I understand why you left. All of us are happy that you found such a good job.”
“I left because Rachel’s mother didn’t like that she was dating as she put it, the help.”
“I know Roberta can be such a bitch,” Helen mumbled.
“It didn’t matter because she still thinks I’m white trash.”
“I’m sorry, Alexandra.”
Alexandra shrugged. “Don’t tell Rachel that you told me and don’t bring someone new in until you hear from me.”
“What are you going to do?” Helen asked.
“Correct the mistake I made.” Alexandra walked out of Helen’s office and knocked on Rachel’s door.
“Come on in, Helen,” Rachel said from the other side of the door.
Alexandra poked her head in. “It’s me, Rachel.” She walked over to Rachel and kissed her mouth softly.
“This is a nice surprise.”
“I saw the light and thought I’d come over and see you. Are you hungry?” Alexandra asked, kissing Rachel again.
“Starving, but if you keep kissing me, I won’t care about eating food.”
“I’ll go next door and start dinner,” Alexandra said with a smile. “How long do you think you’ll be?”
“About a half hour.”
*
The next morning, Alexandra walked into the office building and sought out Angie. “Good morning, Angie,” Alexandra said wearing a wide smile.
“Morning, Alex. You look chipper this morning.”
“I am.” Alexandra leaned closer. “Come into my office we need to talk.”
Angie followed Alexandra and took a seat as Alexandra closed the door. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. How are Sheila and Maryann doing with their layoff?”
“Maryann is happy. She’s thinking of finally having a baby. Sheila has been looking for a job, but so far no luck.” Angie wrinkled her eyebrows. “Why?”
“Because I’m going to give notice today and I wanted to know who I should recommend to take my job.”
“Why are you leaving?” Alexandra smiled. “You’re going back to work for Rachel aren’t you?”
Alexandra nodded. “I am. I left hoping Rachel’s family would finally accept me, but it hasn’t made a difference. When Rachel told her mother we were engaged, she wanted to fix Rachel up with some doctor at the hospital.” Alexandra sighed deeply. “Rachel needs me at the office and I loved being with her every day. I can’t think of another place I would rather be.”
“What are you going to tell Ted?”
“It’s none of his business why I’m leaving. I’m not going to tell him I’m going back to Rachel’s office because it may get back to her parents. I’m just going to tell him I got an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Alexandra said with a smile.
*
Before lunch, Alexandra went into Ted’s office. “Alexandra, what can I do for you?”
“Ted, I’m sorry, but I have to give you notice.” Alexandra tried to keep her face from breaking into a smile.
“Why? Is it more money that you’re looking for?” Ted asked leaning over his desk toward Alexandra.
“No, but I did get an offer that I can’t refuse.”
“We gave you a job with very little experience and this is how you repay us?” Ted’s voice began to show his impatience.
“I’m sorry, Ted.” Alexandra shrugged. “It’s something I have to do for myself.”
“You’re not just going to walk out today, are you?”
“No, but I do have a suggestion for my replacement.”
“Who?” Ted asked uninterested.
“Sheila. She still hasn’t found another job and she’ll be perfect.”
Ted sat there quietly looking at Alexandra. “If she accepts, you can leave the end of the week.”
Alexandra stood up and held out her hand. “I really am sorry, Ted.”
Ted just shook his head as she walked out of his office.
CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE
Alexandra walked into Rachel’s office early Monday morning. She had called Helen on Friday to tell her to let the temp go. Helen and Callie came into the office earlier than they normally did.
“Are we happy to see you,” Helen said, coming over to hug Alexandra.
“Me too,” Callie added. “It’s been hell here.”
“Well, I’m glad I can help. I hope Rachel is just as happy as you two.”
“Happy? She’s going to be over the moon,” Helen said with her arm around Alexandra’s shoulder.
“Then let’s get to work.” Alexandra opened the computer and tried to straighten out the mess that was left.
At eleven o’clock, Rachel came in the back door and went to her office without speaking with anyone. Rachel spent the next half hour going over paperwork, but looking at her watch; she knew it was time to start seeing her patients.
“Helen,” Rachel said into the intercom. “Would you get Mrs. Garner’s file for me?”
“I’m kind of busy right now, Rachel. Can you go get it yourself?” Helen asked sweetly.
“Okay,” Rachel said with a huff. She opened her office door and realized she hadn’t asked Helen who was out front. Rachel couldn’t keep track of the names anymore. Rachel cleared her throat and said. “Excuse me. Could you please give me Mrs. Garner’s file?”
Alexandra spun in her chair so Rachel could see her. “Of course, Doctor Benson,” she said with a wide smile.
“Alex. What are you doing here?” Rachel asked moving closer.
“Working.”
“Did you get laid off?” Rachel asked moving closer.
Alexandra shook her head. “I heard you needed me.”
Rachel smiled. “I needed you, huh?” Her eyes wide with excitement.
“Yeah, that’s what I heard, but if I was wrong…?” Alexandra shrugged her shoulders and pretended to leave her desk.
“No. No, please stay. We need you. I need you.” Rachel put her hands on Alexandra’s shoulders to keep her in place. “You’re really back?”
Alexandra nodded up and down. “I’ll never leave you again. I’m sorry.”
Rachel turned her chair around and knelt down so they were at eye level. “You have nothing to be sorry about. I love you Alex, and I’m thrilled that you came back.” Rachel’s brows furrowed. “What did you tell your boss?”
Alexandra smile was bright. “I told him I got an offer I couldn’t refuse.”
Rachel pulled Alexandra close. As they were hugging, Helen and Callie came out of their offices and stood there watching them.
Helen cleared her throat. “D
on’t you have patients waiting, Doctor Benson?”
Alexandra and Rachel both laughed as they released each other.
*
As the last of the patients left the building, Rachel called Alexandra through the intercom. “Alex, can you come into my office please?”
Alexandra lightly tapped on the door and opened it. “Hey.”
“Come in and close the door,” Rachel said, already walking toward her.
“What do you need?” Alexandra asked smiling.
“You,” Rachel said as she moved closer to Alexandra, and reached behind her to close the door. Rachel now had Alexandra’s body pinned against the back of the door. She kissed Alexandra’s lips nibbling along the edge and pulling her blouse out of her pants. “You’ve been driving me crazy all day.” Her lips went to Alexandra’s neck as her hands found the soft skin. Her hands went to her breasts as her mouth came back in a deep searing kiss.
Alexandra pulled her mouth off Rachel’s and whispered panting. “Callie and Helen are still here.”
“Let’s go home,” Rachel begged.
Alexandra smiled. “Give me ten minutes.”
Rachel kissed her again. “Five.”
“Okay, but you have to stop,” Alexandra said with a giggle. She tried putting her blouse back into her pants before opening the door. When she did, Callie and Helen were standing there.
“No screwing in the office, Doc,” Callie said with a laugh.
“Hey, there’s no rule about me kissing my fiancé in the office,” Rachel said sticking out her tongue.
Alexandra continued walking toward her office laughing.
“Yeah, she looks like that was just a kiss,” Helen said, hooking her finger toward Alexandra.
“Hey, I’m happy.” Rachel offered.
“Yeah, we are too, Doc.” Callie and Helen bid their good night and left the two love birds alone.
Alexandra came out of her office grinning. “Race you home?”
They both went out the back door hand and hand running across the yard. As they hit the back door, Alexandra stopped.
“Why are you stopping?” Rachel asked, anxious to get inside.
“Are you really happy that I’m back working with you?” Alexandra asked as her face turned serious.
